  • We systematically analyze the influence of fracture junction, solute transfer characteristics on transport patterns in discrete, two-dimensional fracture network models. Regular lattices and random fracture networks with power-law length distributions are considered in conjunction with particle tracking methods. Solute transfer probabilities at fracture junctions are determined from analytical considerations and from simple complete mixing and streamline routing models. For regular fracture networks, mixing conditions at fracture junctions are always dominated by either complete mixing or streamline routing end member cases. Moreover bulk transport properties such as the spreading and the dilution of solute are highly sensitive to the mixing rule. However in power-law length networks there is no significant difference in bulk transport properties, as calculated by assuming either of the two extreme mixing rules. This apparent discrepancy between the effects of mixing properties at fracture junctions in regular and random fracture networks is explained by the statistics of the coordination number and of the flow conditions at fracture intersections. We suggest that the influence of mixing rules on bulk solute transport could be important in systematic orthogonal fracture networks but insignificant in random networks.

  • Deep mixing method has been used for ground improvement and foundation system for embankment, port and harbor foundations, retaining wall, and liquefaction mitigations. It has attractive benefits because it is not only improved strength of soft ground but superior for prevention of settlement. However, the quality controls of improved mass affect to the efficiency of the deep mixing method is not properly established. These effects vary depending upon the construction environments and conditions of agitation in consideration of an agitator. The strength and shape of the improved column are not unique and these are affected by mechanical properties of agitators. In this study, in order to investigate the efficiency of deep mixing method for ground improvement on a soft clay ground, experimental studies are performed considering mechanical properties of agitator; the location of exit-hole of admixtures, an angle of mixing wing and a speed of revolution. The experiments are conducted with the simulated apparatus for deep mixing plant that reduced the scale in 1:8 of the real plant. According to the results, the diameter and shape of improved column mass vary depending on the mechanical properties and operating conditions of agitator. Its quality is better when the exit-hole of admixtures is located in the mixing wing, when an angle of mixing wing is large, and when the speed of revolution is rapid.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of mixing on the aggressive behavior of commercially housed pigs. The behavioral patterns of 36 groups of pigs (a total of 360 animals) were observed over 3 consecutive days directly after weaning ($25{\pm}1.2$ days of age), and 25 and 50 days later with the aid of video technology. Fight latency and total duration and frequency of fighting were significantly different among the age groups. The aggressive behaviors decreased in 75-day old pigs if compared to 25- and 50-day old animals. Moreover, dominance index (DI) was higher in 25-day old and lower in 75-day old pigs. A comparison of dominant (DI>0) and submissive (DI<0) pigs showed significant differences (p<0.05) for major aggressive behaviors in all age groups. Dominant pigs were involved in more aggressive interactions, had longer fights, and initiated more fights than submissive pigs. Post-mixing aggressive behavior was altered by previous experience of mixing. Aggressive behavior and DI are suitable methods for analyzing the effects of mixing on commercially housed growing pigs.

  • We report on the effects of mixing of powders with various particle sizes on fracture toughness and wear resistance of thermally sprayed WC-10Co-4Cr coating layers fabricated by HVOF (high-velocity oxygen fuel) process. The size and the mixing ratio of powders were changed in order to get high fracture toughness and wear resistance. The mixing of small amount of coarse powders with fine powders resulted in the highest fracture toughness and wear resistance due to the lowest porosity in coating layers.

  • Ultrafine $SnO_2$ powder was prepared by the diffusion mixing gas-phase reaction of $SnCl_4$(g) and water vapor. The effects of reaction variables, such as the chloride partial pressure, the reaction temperature, and the residence time is the reactor, on the powder size were examined systematically. Calculated concentration and distribution of chemical species, using the Burke-Schumann diffusion mixing model, were compared with the experimetal results. The effects of the reaction variables on the powder size were also discussed qualitatively.

  • Recently, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases including high blood pressure and heart disease has increased with increased meat consumption in Korea. This study was performed to determine the optimal mixing ratio among ratios of 0, 1:0, 0:1, 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2 of mulberry leaf powder to mulberry fruit powder based on the anti-inflammatory effects. Then, the quality characteristics of the sauce for meat prepared with different mixing ratios (0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5) of mulberry leaf powder to mulberry fruit powder were assessed. The inhibitory effects of ML2MF1 (2:1 ratio of mulberry leaf powder to mulberry fruit powder) on NO and TNF-${\alpha}$ production were superior to those of other mixing ratios. With respect to color values of the sauce for meat prepared with different mixing ratio of mulberry leaf powder to mulberry fruit powder, as the mulberry fruit powder mixing ratios was increased, redness was increased but lightness and yellowness were decreased. The sensory evaluation of ML1MF5S (1:5 ratio of mulberry leaf powder to mulberry fruit powder) sauce for meat showed the highest score with respect to color, smell, taste, harmony with meat and the overall preference. In conclusion, as the mulberry leaf powder mixing ratio was increased, the anti-inflammatory activities were increased. But sensory evaluation scores were increased as the mulberry fruit powder mixing ratio was increased. Therefore, by performing further study, the method to increase mulberry leaf powder in the mixing ratio for improving the sensory evaluation should be provided.

  • The effects of the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive on the electrochemical performance of an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrode were investigated. Coin-type EDLC cells with an organic electrolyte were fabricated using the electrode samples with different ball-milling times for the mixing of an active material and a conductive additive. The ball-milling time had a strong influence on the electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode. The homogeneous mixing of the active material and the conductive additive by ball-milling was very important to obtain an efficient EDLC electrode. However, an EDLC electrode with an excessive ball-milling time displayed low electrical conductivity due to the characteristic change of a conductive additive, leading to poor electrochemical performance. The mixing of an active material and a conductive additive played a crucial role in determining the electrochemical performance of EDLC electrode. The optimal ball-milling time contributed to a homogeneous mixing of an active material and a conductive additive, leading to good electrochemical performance of the EDLC electrode.

  • The objective of this study was to invetigate the coagulation effects of landfill leachate by using Acid Mine Drainage(AND). The coagulation efficiency was investigated by mixing landfill leachate with F $e^{+3}$ solution earned by oxidation of pyrite(AMD). In the results of this experiment, it was found that the amount of removed COD and SS was approximately 30% respectively by mixing at the ratio of AMD three to leachate one. And it showed highest turbidity removal efficiency at all mixing ratio. Concentration of Fe was decreased with increasing mixing ratio, however it was increased inversely at mixing ratio 4. Optimal mixing ratio was 3 at the results obtained by leachate coagulation experiments. Also removal efficiency at mixing ratio 3 corresponded to 500mg/$\ell$ of FeC $l_3$ dosage. it was suggested that pretreatment by mixing of AMD and leachate remove both suspended organic material of leachate and metal of AMD.

  • In-mold Coating is a method that can simultaneously perform injection molding and surface coating in injection mold. The material used for coating is two-component polyurethane which is composed of polyol and isocyanate. L-type mixing head can be used to mix polyol and isocyanate uniformly, and inject them inside the mold cavity. The surface quality of the injection molded products by using in-mold coating depends on the mixing uniformity between main agent and hardener. In this study, flow analysis was performed to design a mixing head for uniform mixing of two-component polyurethane. Especially the effects of design parameters of mixing head on mixing uniformity and nozzle pressure were investigated. The parameters of mixing head were mixing chamber diameter, cleaning cylinder diameter, nozzle alignment angle in the horizontal and vertical direction, and cleaning piston position. It was found that optimal design values were mixing chamber diameter of 3.5 mm, cleaning cylinder diameter of 5.0 mm, nozzle horizontal/vertical alignment angles of 140°/160°, and cleaning piston position of 1.8 mm. The optimal values would be used to develop a two-component mixing head achieving an uniform mixing for in-mold coating.

  • The mixing method of water and chemicals is significant in a small-scale water supply system because drinking water should be supplied with a certain quantity of remaining chemicals maintained. In the present study, the concentration distribution and the mixing index were obtained from four models, which were to find out the optimal mixing method of water and chemicals. The two models brought the good mixing effects out of the four, one for providing chemicals from the center of water supply pipe and the other for setting up the semicircle block at the downstream of the chemicals-providing pipe. As a result, the mixing effect was found out to be increased due to the diffusion and the disturbance of flows. In conclusion, these results are expected to contribute to designing the optimal mixing system.
