  • In general, anionic and cationic surfactants are incompatible because their mixtures form insoluble complexes and precipitate in the water. There are, however, some equimolar complexes of anionic and cationic surfactant that are soluble and behave like regular surfactants, specifically like nonionic surfactants, thus named pseudo-nonionic surfactant complexes. Pseudo-nonionic complexes are more effective and efficient in surface activities than their ionic surfactant components as shown by their equilibrium and dynamic surface tensions. They pack at the interface more than their ionic components. When a novel cationic surfactant, diglyceryl dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride(DGDAC), having the polyhydroxyl group at the hydrophilic head group, was mixed with a conventional anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS) at equimolar ratio, we found that the aqueous equimolar mixture showed strong positive synergism in which molecular interaction parameter ${\beta}^M$ was very low, -17.2. According to the studies of equilibrium phase behavior and microscopy, this mixed system could form homogenous solutions containing vesicles.

  • In this study, the O/W emulsions prepared from coconut oil and the non-ionic mixed surfactant as Tween-Span system were evaluated and optimized in order to upgrade the stability of manufactured emulsions. For the optimization, a central composite design model-response surface methodology, so called as CCD-RSM was implemented. Quantitative factors were the hydrophile-lipophilie balance (HLB), amount of non-ionic mixed surfactant and emulsification speed while experimental results included the mean droplet size (MDS), emulsion stability index (ESI), and thermal instability index (TII). Optimized values of the HLB, amount of non-ionic mixed surfactant and emulsification speed obtained from CCD-RSM were 9.1, 8.7 wt.%, and 6,200.8 rpm, respectively. Expected experimental results for MDS, ESI, and TII under the optimized experimental condition were 151.0 nm, 99.86, and 3.17%, respectively. The average error from actual experiments which established for validation of the conclusions was lower than 3.5%. Therefore, a highly favorable level could be obtained when the optimized CCD-RSM was applied to manufacturing the O/W emulsion in this study.

  • This study investigates the effect of polarity of oily soil on adhesion of oily and particulate soil to PET fabric in oily/particulate mixed soil systems. The potential energy of interaction between two particles was examined as a fundamental environment of adhesion of soil to fabrics. The ${\zeta}$-potential of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particles was measured by a microelectrophoresis method, and the potential energy of interaction between two particles was calculated by using the Verwey-Overbeek theory. The ${\zeta}$-potential of particle and the potential energy of interaction between two particles was slightly influenced by the polarity and type of oily soil, but increased with the increased anionic surfactant concentration and amount of oily soil. The adhesion of oily soil to fabric increased with the additional amount of polarity of oily soil and decreased surfactant concentration that was relatively high at a temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ surfactants solution. The adhesion of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ particle to PET fabric decreased with an increased amount and polarity of oily soil and increased surfactant concentration Although some similarity exists, the general trend of the adhesion to fabric by particulate soil differ from oily soil.

  • The effects of surfactant types and the ratio of nonionic and anionic surfactants on the washing of diesel contaminated soil were investigated. In batch tests, the nonionic surfactant, which has HLB within 12-13, showed a high diesel removal efficiency and Tergitol 15-S-7 (T15S7) with 20 g/L concentration exhibited the highest removal efficiency of 79-88% among the tested nonionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants, in general, showed lower removal efficiency than nonionic surfactants. In case of mixed surfactant system, the removal efficiency increased with nonionic surfactant concentration. With mixed surfactants of T15S7 and SDS as 3 : 1 ratio, diesel removal was enhanced to 76% with 10 g/L of the mixed surfactants. These results could be used in the selection of proper surfactants for remediation of diesel contaminated soils.

  • A compression ignition type of diesel engine makes fuel efficiency better and $CO_2$ in the exhaust gas lower. Also it is suitable to apply alternative fuels(blended fuel) to the engine. The objective of this study is the emissions reduction of diesel engine with EF(Emulsified fuel). The emulsified fuel consists of diesel and peroxide($H_2O_2$) and Soot reduction without worsening of NOx emissions can be achieved by using thermal decomposition of the peroxide, i.e. the chemical effect of the OH radical in actual engine. For manufacturing emulsified fuel, a surfactant which is comprised of span 80 and tween 80 mixed as 9:1, was mixed with a fixed with 3% of the total volume in the emulsion fuel. In addition, considering the mixing ratio of the surfactant, the mixing ratio of $H_2O_2$ in the emulsified fuel was set as EF0, EF2, EF12, EF22, EF32, and EF42, respectively. Consequently, this study aims to obtain the optimization of fuel design(mixing) for the emulsified fuel applying to the diesel engine.

  • The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the counter ion binding constants (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) with Polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether (Brij 35) in water were determined as a function of α1 (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method from 15 oC to 35 oC. Values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔGom, ΔHom, and ΔSom) for the micellization of TTAB/Brij 35 mixtures were calculated and analyzed from the temperature dependence of CMC values. The results say that the measured values of ΔGom are all negative at the whole measured condition but the values of ΔSom and ΔHom are positive or negative, depending on the measured temperature and α1.

  • The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the counter ion binding constants (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) with polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether (Brij 30) in water were determined as a function of 1 (the overall mole fraction of DBS) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method from 288 K to 308 K. Various thermodynamic parameters (Smo, Hmo, and Gmo) for the micellization of DBS/Brij 30 mixtures were calculated and analyzed from the temperature dependence of CMC values. The measured values of Gomare all negative but the values of Smo are positive in the whole measured temperature region. On the other hand, the values of Hmo are positive or negative, depending on the measured temperature and 1.

  • The surfactants applied in household detergents and industrial cleansers should satisfy the requirement of not just the basic function such as emulsification, solubilisation, dispersion, detergency, wetting and foaming, but also the economical efficiency and the safety to human and environment. In the viewpoint of the sustainable development, the surfactants, moreover, have to reduce raw materials and energy consumption and waste disposal when they are being manufactured and also consumed for their purposes. New high-performance surfactants have been extensively studied and developed in order to respond the change in social and economical environment. Noticeable progresses have been achieved so far, which are the significant increase in solubility and surface activity through the minor modification of existing surfactant molecular structure and the synergistic increase in a surface activity shown in the mixed surfactant system of anionic and cationic surfactants. In this review, the important and meaningful progresses achieved recently in technological advance and practical application will be summarized and discussed.

  • The interactions of 4-chlorobenzoic acid with the micellar system of various cationic, nonionic, and mixed surfactant systems were studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of 4-chlorobenzoic acid into those micellar systems have been measured at various temperatures and various thermodynamic parameters for the solubilization of 4-chlorobenzoic acid have been calculated and analyzed from those changes. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o_s$ are all negative within the measured temperature range and that the values of ${\Delta}H^o_s$ and ${\Delta}S^o_s$ are all positive. The effects of alkyl-group's length of surfactant molecules on the solubilization of 4-chlorobenzoic acid have been also measured. The values of $K_s$ were dependent simultaneously on the alkyl-group's length and the kind of head-group in surfactant molecules. From these changes we can postulate the solubilization site and the degree of interaction of 4-chlorobenzoic acid with the micellar systems.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter-ion binding constant (B) for the mixed micellizations of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) with other surfactants (DTAB, CTAB, Tween-20, Tween-40, and Tween-80) in aqueous solution of 4-chlorobenzoic acid (0.5 mM) at $25^{\circ}C$ were determined as a function of ${\alpha}_1$ (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by using the spectrophotometric method and the conductivity method. Various thermodynamic parameters ($X_i$, ${\gamma}_i$, $C_i$, $a_i^M$, ${\beta}$, and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were calculated for each mixed surfactant system and compared with the other mixed surfactant systems by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results show that TTAB/DTAB mixed system has a great positive deviation from the ideal mixed micellar model and the other mixed systems have great negative deviations from the ideal mixed model.
