Fabrication of a Full-Scale Pilot Model of a Cost-Effective Sodium Nickel-Iron Chloride Battery Over 40 Ah

  • To fabricate a full-scale pilot model of the cost-effective Na-(Ni,Fe)Cl2 cell, a Na-beta-alumina solid electrolyte (BASE) was developed by applying a one-step synthesis cum sintering process as an alternative to the conventional solid-state reaction process. Also, Fe metal powder, which is cheaper than Ni, was mixed with Ni metal powder, and was used for cathode material to reduce the cost of raw material. As a result, we then developed a prototype Na-(Ni,Fe)Cl2 cell. Consequently, the Ni content in the Na-(Ni,Fe)Cl2 cell is decreased to approximately (20 to 50) wt.%. The #1 prototype cell (dimensions: 34 mm × 34 mm × 235 mm) showed a cell capacity of 15.9 Ah, and 160.3 mAh g-1 (per the Ni-Fe composite), while the #2 prototype cell (dimensions: 50 mm × 50 mm × 335 mm) showed a cell capacity of 49.4 Ah, and 153.2 mAh g-1 at the 2nd cycle.

금속분말재료의 사출 성형해석에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Injection Molding Analysis of the Metal Powder Material)

  • 본 연구는 광통신용 아답타의 필수품인 플랜지 개발을 위한 금속분말 사출성형해석에 관한 내용이다. 금속분말 사출성형법은 세라믹 또는 스테인레스 분말과 바인더를 혼합하여 복잡한 형상의 사출성형품을 제조하는 기술로써, 지금까지 가공기술로 제작이 복잡하거나 생산성이 저조한 제품들에 대한 생산을 대체 할 수 있는 기술로 관심을 받고 있다. 연구 목적은 기존의 기계가공을 통해 제작했던 제품에 대해 공정을 최소화하기 위함이다. 사출성형해석을 위해 먼저 스테인레스 계 STS316 금속분말과 바인더를 6대4 비율로 혼합하여 과립형 펠렛의 사출 성형재료를 완성하여 해결하였다. 이후, 3차원 모델링, 모델의 메시화 작업 등을 수행하여 최적의 사출성형 해석조건(금형 온도, 용융 온도, 사출 시간, 사출 온도, 사출 압력, 충진 시간 및 냉각 시간 등)을 도출하였다. 해석결과 성형품은 최초 사출 후 13.29초가 경과되면 취출이 가능하였다. 또한 용융수지는 스프루, 러너, 게이트를 거쳐 금형 내부까지 유동 및 충전이 안정적으로 진행되어 양호한 성형품의 제조가 기대되었다.

  • This paper describes the manufacturing process of tilting pad gas bearing with a diameter of 5 mm and a length of 0.5-1 mm for power MEMS (Micro Electomechanical Systems) applications. The bearing compacts with nanopowder feedstock were prepared by Ni-metal mold with 2-mold system using LIGA process. The effect of the manufacturing conditions on sintering properties of nanopowder gas bearing was investigated. In this work, Fe-45 wt%Ni nanopowder with an average diameter of 30-50 nm size was used as starting material. After mixing the nanopowder and the wax-based binders, the amount of powder was controlled to obtain the certain mixing ratio. The nanopowder bearing compacts were sintered with 1-2 hr holding time under hydrogen atmospheres and under temperatures of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,000^{\circ}C$. Finally, the critical batch of mixed powder system was found to be 70% particle fraction in total volume. The maximum density of the sintered bearing specimen was about 94% of theoretical density.

NANO-SIZED COMPOSITE MATERIALS WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE

  • Ceramic based nanocomposite, in which nano-sized ceramics and metals were dispersed within matrix grains and/or at grain boundaries, were successfully fabricated in the ceramic/cerarnic and ceramic/metal composite systems such as $Al_2O_3$/SiC, $Al_2O_3$/$Si_3N_4$, MgO/SiC, mullite/SiC, $Si_3N_4/SiC, $Si_3N_4$/B, $Al_2O_3$/W, $Al_2O_3$/Mo, $Al_2O_3$/Ni and $ZrO_2$/Mo systems. In these systems, the ceramiclceramic composites were fabricated from homogeneously mixed powders, powders with thin coatings of the second phases and amorphous precursor composite powders by usual powder metallurgical methods. The ceramiclmetal nanocomposites were prepared by combination of H2 reduction of metal oxides in the early stage of sinterings and usual powder metallurgical processes. The transmission electron microscopic observation for the $Al_2O_3$/SiC nanocomposite indicated that the second phases less than 70nm were mainly located within matrix grains and the larger particles were dispersed at the grain boundaries. The similar observation was also identified for other cerarnic/ceramic and ceramiclmetal nanocornposites. The striking findings in these nanocomposites were that mechanical properties were significantly improved by the nano-sized dispersion from 5 to 10 vol% even at high temperatures. For example, the improvement in hcture strength by 2 to 5 times and in creep resistance by 2 to 4 orders was observed not only for the ceramidceramic nanocomposites but also for the ceramiclmetal nanocomposites with only 5~01%se cond phase. The newly developed silicon nitride/boron nitride nanocomposites, in which nano-sized hexagonal BN particulates with low Young's modulus and fracture strength were dispersed mainly within matrix grains, gave also the strong improvement in fracture strength and thermal shock fracture resistance. In presentation, the process-rnicro/nanostructure-properties relationship will be presented in detail. The special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the roles of nano-sized dispersions on mechanical properties.

Effect of annealing on the magnetic behavior and microstructures of spherical NiZn ferrite particle prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

  • The spherical NiZn ferrite particles were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis with mixed solution of aqueous metal nitrates. The NiZn ferrite particle was observed with nano-sized primary particles of about 10 nm or less before annealing which represented as paramagnetic behavior measured at 77 K and room temperature. The typical abnormal growth of primary particles like polyhedral primary particles was observed by annealing at 1273 K with Zn-concentration dependency. The XRD patterns showed good crystallinity of NiZn ferrite powder after annealing. In annealing process, the intra-particle sintering phenomenon was observed and the spherical particle morphology was collapsed at 1673 K. The saturation magnetization of NiZn ferrite powder for each annealing temperature was decreased with measuring temperature of $77{\sim}$300K.

고부피분율 SiC분말 예비성형체의 제조공정과 기계적특성 (Fabrication Process and Mechanical Properties of High Volume Fraction SiC Particle Preform)

  • The fabrication process and mechanical properties of SiC particle prefrrms with high volume fraction ranged 50∼71% were investigated to make metal matrix composites for possible applications as heat sinks in electronic packares. The SiC particle preforms with 50∼71vol% of reinforcement were fabricated by a new modified process named ball milling and pressing method. The SiC particle performs were fabricated by ball milling of SiC particles with single sized of 48${\mu}$m in diameter or two different size of 8${\mu}$m and 48${\mu}$min diameter, with collodal SiO2 as inorgnic binder in distilled water, and the mixed slurries were cold pressed for consolidation into final prefom. The compressive strengths og calcined SiC particle prefoms increased from 20MPa to 155MPa with increasing the content of inorganis binder, temperature and time for calcination. The increase of compressive strength of SiC particle bridge the interfaces of two neighboring SiC particles.

유기용매의 사용없이 알콕사이드로부터 코디어라이트 분말제조 (Cordierite Powder Preparation from Alkoxides without Using Organic Solvents)

  • Cordierite powders were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with catalysts in water medium without using organic solvents. Water was adjusted to a certain pH by HC1 and NH4OH. $\alpha$-Cordierite powder was prepared from aluminum isopropoxide, tetraethyl orthosilicate and magnesium ethoxide mixed with water adjusted to pH of 3. At water pH of 11, $\alpha$-cordierite, mullite and $\beta$-quartz phases were coexisted. The powders were freeze dried, calcined and then fired at different temperatures. The characteristics of powders were examined by means of DTA, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and electron microscopy. It was found that $\alpha$-cordierite could be synthesized at temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ from the powders prepared by alkoxides with water medium without organic solvents.

  • 3D printing of NiTi alloys has been successfully achieved. A novel printing process has been developed and used, which consists in selective deposition of a solvent on a granule bed. The granules are composed of metal powders and thermoplastic binder, which are mixed and sieved by conventional methods. A sound green strength is obtained after solvent evaporation. Sintered parts exhibit good density, proper phase composition and shape memory behaviour.

  • The higher the addition rate, the less difference in kneading was found. This is because most of the cases are mixed with vinyl gloves by hand when immediately mixed in the field, so there is no problem of mixing dough according to the amount of addition. The mean increase temperature for 20 minutes was 31.6℃ for Plain, 38.1℃ for Al, 33.7℃ for Cu, and 5~7℃ for Al 20% added sample, 38.1℃ for Al 20% added sample, but 36.6℃ for Al 5% added sample. This suggests that it is possible to improve its own heat transferability by adding metal powder to epoxy adhesives.

  • The $(LM)Ni_{4.5}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.2}Al_{0.2}$ hydrogen storage alloy powders were conducted 25wt% electroless copper plating in an acidic bath. For the preparation of a hydride electrodes, the copper coated alloy powder was mixed with Si-sealant(organosilicon) and compacted with $6t/cm^2$ at room temperature. The electrode characteristics were examined through electrochemical measurements in a half cell. As a sealant contents increased, the initial discharge capacity of si-sealant bounded electrode was lower and the activation rate in high current density was slower. For extended cycles, however, the electrodes with the Si-sealant were superior in a high rate discharge and useful range of temperature over the sealant-free electrode. In addition, the cycle life increased with increasing the amount of Si-sealant added. It can be suggested from the results that the Si-sealant as a binder could be applied to the preparation of the metal hydride electrode.
