  • In order to improve the efficiency of methane steam reforming process, a part of the system which produces hydrogen from heavy hydrocarbon resources such as coal, we combined metal catalyst with CaO sorbent and fabricated catalyst/sorbent. To increase the porosity and the compressive strength of sorbent, carbon black and ${\alpha}-alumina$ were mixed with CaO powder during preparation. The effects of sorbent composition on the physical properties were investigated by SEM, TGA, BET, XRD, abrasion strength measuring device and adsorption-desorption instrument. Sorbent with 5 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 10 wt% carbon black showed the best physical features with $7.61kg_f$ strength and 47% $CO_2$ adsorption capability. Various metal catalysts such as Ni, Co and Fe were supported on the sorbent developed and 10 wt% Ni/sorbent was selected for methane steam reforming process based on the result of reaction experiment. The reaction system using the catalyst/sorbent showed better $H_2$ productivity compared to the detached system with catalyst and sorbent, indicating the effectiveness of the system developed in this study.

  • Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise in various applications, including molecular separation, dye separation, gas separation, filtration, and desalination. Integrating COFs into membranes enhances permeability, selectivity, and stability, improving separation processes. Combining COFs with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) creates nanocomposite membranes with high permeability and stability, ideal for dye separation. Incorporating COFs into polyamide (PA) membranes improves permeability and selectivity through a synthetic interfacial strategy. Three-dimensional COF fillers in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) enhance CO2/CH4 separation, making them suitable for biogas upgrading. All-nanoporous composite (ANC) membranes, which combine COFs and metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, overcome permeance-selectivity trade-offs, significantly improving gas permeance. Computational simulations using hypothetical COFs (hypoCOFs) demonstrate superior CO2 selectivity and working capacity relevant for CO2 separation and H2 purification. COFs integrated into thin-film composite (TFC) and polysulfonamide (PSA) membranes enhance rejection performance for organic contaminants, salt contaminants, and heavy metal ions, improving separation capabilities. TpPa-SO3H/PAN covalent organic framework membranes (COFMs) exhibited superior desalination performance compared to traditional polyamide membranes by utilizing charged groups to enable efficient desalination through electrostatic repulsion, suggesting their potential for ionic and molecular separations. These findings highlight COFs' potential in membrane technology for enhanced separation processes by improving permeability, selectivity, and stability. In this review, COF applied for the separation process is discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to manufacture a high-performance titanium yellow pigment. Anatase type $TiO_2$ was the skeleton of the pigment and $Sb_2O_3$ is used as the color assistant for the coloring agent, $Cr_2O_3$. Mixed raw materials for the pigment were $TiO_2$(98%), $Sb_2O_3$(99.5%), and $Cr_2O_3$(99.5%). The raw materials were mixed by a dry process and crystallized by calcination at $1,000{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$. The crystalline material was pulverized in a Jar Mill under $1{\mu}m$ by a wet process and dried for 12 hours at $100^{\circ}C$. The pigment was finally made by a fine grinding process. To determine the best temperature for calcination, 4 temperature sections ($1000^{\circ}C$, $1100^{\circ}C$, $1150^{\circ}C$, and $1200^{\circ}C$) were set up. The X-ray diffraction peak of the rutile crystalline structure was highest at $1,150^{\circ}C$. The yellow ceramic pigment, which has the rutile structure, was applied for coating materials. The synthesized pigments underwent a discoloration tests on the acid resistance, alkaline resistance, weather resistance and heat resistance. In addition, a detection test on harmful heavy metals ($Cr^{+6}$) was done. The resulting values (${\Delta}E$) of the weather resistance test (2000hr), acid resistance test, alkaline resistance test, and heat resistance test were 0.74, 0.16, 0.07 and 0.29. The resulting value for heavy metals testing was 34ppm.

  • In order to determine the horizontal and vertical distributions of metals and prospect the recent metal pollution history in Nakdong Estuary, we took surface and core sediments. Maximum value of organic matter occurs at the upstream site located 4 km from Nakdong barrage, and the concentration of trace metals (Zn, Cu, and Pb etc.) decrease seaward in the estuary. The sedimentation rates, based on $^{210}$Pb$_{ex}$ and $^{137}$Cs activities, were 0.34 cm/yr in inside of barrage (core 1) and 0.25 cm/yr in Changrim (core 4). Sediment mixing layer does not exist in core 1, where anoxic condition is known to be prevail. The topmost sediment layer of core 4 (<3.5 cm) is severely mixed. At sites 1 and 4, concentrations of Cu slowly increased during the period of 1920-1970, rapidly increased during 1970-1990, and followed by slight decrease after 1990. Zn contents increased in early 1960s and peaked in 1993, and followed by decrease after 1990s. Pb has increased continuously since early 1970s. At the downstream of the barrage, Cu and Zn have increased in the topmost layer. The trend of increase of Cu is evident after 1950 (11 cm in sediment depth). Overall trend of heavy metal concentration clearly indicates the pollution has been increasing after the construction of the barrage.

  • Biochar, a by-product from pyrolysis of biomass, is a promising option to mitigate climate change by increasing soil carbon sequestration. This material is also considered to have potential to remediate a soil with heavy metal pollution by increasing the soil's adsorptive capacity. This study conducted the assessment of two biochars considering the climate change mitigation potential and heavy metal removal capacity at the same time. Two kinds of biochars (BC_Ch, TW_Ch) were prepared by pyrolyzing the biomass of burcucumber (BC_Bm) and tea waste (TW_Bm). The soils polluted with Pb were mixed with biochars or biomass and incubated for 60 d. During the incubation, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $N_2O$ were regularly measured and the soil before and after incubation was analyzed for chemical and biological parameters including the acetate extractable Pb. The results showed that only the BC_Ch treatment significantly reduced the amount of Pb after 60 d incubation. During the incubation, the $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ emissions from the BC_Ch and TW_Ch were decreased by 24% and 34% compared to the BC_Bm and TW_Bm, respectively. The $CH_4$ emissions were not significantly affected by biochar treatments. We calculated the GWP considering the production of amendment materials, application to the soils, removal of Pb, and soil carbon storage. The BC_Ch treatment had the most negative value because it had the higher Pb adsorption and soil carbon sequestration. Our results imply that if we apply biochar made from burcucumber, we could expect the pollution reduction and climate change mitigation at the same time.

  • In this study, by using a Effective Microorganisms Brewing Cycle, it confirmed the purification effect of pollutants that are adsorbed on the basins stench removal and retarding soil. On the basis of on-site application test, a soil decontamination system will be suggested. Using a Effective Microorganisms Brewing Cycle, the odor concentration is reduced 2.5 times than that of natural purification treatment method. It was measured and found that the quality of the pore water discharged from the soil is improved. In addition, it was found that a composite of copper and lead with the fermentation microorganisms adsorbed on soil particles from the surface of the stirred experiments lagoon mixed soil is reduced to 65% and 66%, respectively, The TPH organic component was confirmed that the reduction effect of 85%. Restoration of reservoir contaminated soils using the effective microorganism brewing cycle needs to be more developed and implemented as a long-term purification system. This study may be a good reference of developing more complete microorganism brewing system which will efficiently reduce the odor and soil contamination based on optimal stirring and mixing ratio of the compound solutions and contaminated soils in reservoir.

  • Glass-ceramics were fabricated by heat-treating a glass at $700^{\circ}C$/10hr which was obtained by melting a glass frit mixed with $40{\sim}80 wt%$ EAF dust at $1300^{\circ}C$/1hr. Dependence of crystal phase and bonding state change upon a compositional change and heat treatment condition were studied and the results was connected to the toxic characterization leaching procedure (TCLP) test data to investigate a chemical durability of the specimens. Increasing dust in a glass shifted the peak around $1000cm^{-1}$ to the lower frequency which was composed of two vibration peaks for the nonbridging oxygen at $960cm^{-1}$ and the bridging oxygen at $1050{\sim}1060cm^{-1}$. Also, the $B_2O_3$ structure of boroxol ring changed to a tetrhedral-, trigonal- and di-borate with dust addition. The Fe-O peaks in the glass-ceramics were observed which is consitent with XRD results of spinel formation. The surface of glass after TCLP test was severely cracked while there was no cracks on a glass-ceramics after TCLP test so the chemical durability of the glass-ceramics is superior than that of glass. The leaching concentration of Fe for the glass-ceramics containing EAF dust 80 wt% is 1/15 times lower than that of glass. The Zn leaching concentration fur the glass-ceramics containing dust < 70 wt% was higher than that of glass but its trend was reversed for the specimen of dust content > 80 wt% which could be concluded as correlated with occurrence of willemite phase.

  • As the demand for the recycling of industrial by-products increases due to various environmental restrictions including the prohibition of ocean disposal, various studies regarding the recycling of industrial by-products are currently being carried out. One of the industrial by-product, coal ash is produced from thermal power generation; studies on the recycling of fly ash have been actively carried out and it is currently recycled in various fields. In the case of bottom ash, however, only a portion of the total amount generated is primarily processed into a particle size of 2~4mm or less than 2mm to be used for gardening purpose and light weight aggregate and so on. The remaining amount is buried at ash disposal sites. Therefore, various studies are needed to develop measures to use bottom ash. This study aimed at identifying the optimal particle size and mixing ratio of bottom ash to be used as CLSM aggregate. To this end, it evaluated the usability of bottom ash as CLSM aggregate, by investigating the flowability and strength change characteristics of CLSM produced with regard to the mixing ratio of weathered granite soil and bottom ash, particle size of bottom ash to be mixed and soil binder addition rate and conducting a heavy metal leaching test.

  • Most of radiation protection clothing is made of lead with excellent radiation shielding because it has excellent process ability and economic efficiency and has a high atomic number. However, lead is classified as a hazardous heavy metal, and there is a risk of lead poisoning. Recently, research to replace lead has been actively conducted. In this study, a research on a shielding sheet with improved physical properties while maintaining the radiation shielding ability equivalent to that of conventional materials by mixing two materials that are harmless to the human body, such as BaSO4 and Bi2O3, and a silicone material binder Was performed. For comparison evaluation with the existing lead shielding sheet, the shielding rate was evaluated using a 40 degree shielding sheet having the highest porosity. As a result, it was analyzed that the shielding rate was superior to 9 % or more at the same thickness. In addition, as a result of studies to improve the physical properties of the shielding sheet, it was analyzed that the shielding sheet mixed with BaSO4/nylon/Bi2O3 was the best.

  • In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.
