A new algorithm for self-tuning digital controller is proposed. The system to be controlled is identified on line in auto-regressive-moving-average(ARMA) form via recursive least mean square method. The control law is obtained from the minimization of an objective function. The proposed objective function is similar to that of Generalized Minimum Variance(GMV) method but modified to lessen the overshoot and to avoid numerical divergence problem. This algorithm is applied to the power system stabilization and the comparison of the proposed method with a conventional power system stabilizer(PSS) is presented.
If an internal combustion engine is operated by consolidated control, the minimum fuel consumption is achieved satisfying the demanded objectives. For this, it is necessary that the engine is operated on the ideal operating line which satisfies minimum fuel consumption. In this context of view, there are many tries to achieve given object. However, the parameter in the internal combustion engines are variable and depend on the operating points. Therefore, it is necessary to cope with the uncertainties such that the optimal operating may be possible. From this point of view, this paper gives a controller design method and a robust stability condition for engine torque control which satisfies the given control performance and robust stability in the presence of physical parameter perturbation. Exactly, the present paper considers a robust stability of this 2DOF servosystem with nonlinear type uncertainty in the engine system, and a robust stability condition for the servosystem is introduced. This result guarantees that if the plant uncertainty is in the permissible set defined by the given condition then a gain tuning can be carried out to suppress the influence of the plant uncertainties.
Railway vehicle equipment goes back again to the state just before when failure by the repair. In repairable system, we are interested in the failure interval. As such, a statistical model of the point process, NHPP power law is often used for the reliability analysis of a repairable system. In order to derive a quantitative reliability value of repairable system, we analyze the failure data of the air brake system of the train line 7. The quantitative value is the failure intensity function that was modified, converted into a cost-rate function. Finally we studied the optimal number and optimal interval in which the costs to a minimum consumption point as cost-rate function. The minimum cost point was 194,613 (won/day) during the total life cycle of the braking system, then the optimal interval were 2,251days and the number of optimal preventive maintenance were 7 times. Additionally, we were compared to the cost of a currently fixed interval(4Y) and the optimum interval then the optimal interval is 3,853(won/day) consuming smaller. In addition, judging from the total life, "fixed interval" is smaller than 1,157 days as "optimal interval".
A multi-level optimal power flow(OPF) algorithm has been evolved from a simple two stage optimal Power flow algorithm for constrained power economic dispatch control. In the proposed algorithm, we consider various constraints such as ower balance, generation capacity, transmission line capacity, transmission losses, security equality, and security inequality constraints. The proposed algorithm consists of four stages. At the first stage, we solve the aggregated problem that is the crude classical economic dispatch problem without considering transmission losses. An initial solution is obtained by the aggregation concept in which the solution satisfies the power balance equations and generation capacity constraints. Then, after load flow analysis, the transmission losses of an initial generation setting are matched by the slack bus generator that produces power with the cheapest cost. At the second stage we consider transmission losses. Formulation of the second stage becomes classical economic dispatch problem involving the transmission losses, which are distributed to all generators. Once a feasible solution is obtained from the second stage, transmission capacity and other violations are checked and corrected locally and quickly at the third stage. The fourth stage fine tunes the solution of the third stage to reach a real minimum. The proposed approach speeds up the two stage optimization method to an average gain of 2.99 for IEEE 30, 57, and 118 bus systems and EPRI Scenario systems A through D testings.
A filtering power divider based on air-filled substrate-integrated waveguide (AFSIW) technology is proposed in this study. The AFSIW structure is used in the proposed filtering power divider for substantially reducing the transmission losses. This structure occupies a large area because of the use of air as a dielectric instead of typical dielectric materials. A filtering power divider provides power division and frequency selectivity simultaneously in a single device. The proposed filtering power divider comprises three AFSIW cavities. The filtering function is achieved using symmetrical inductive posts. The input and output ports of the proposed circuit are realized by directly connecting coaxial lines to the AFSIW cavities. This transition from the coaxial line to the AFSIW cavity eliminates the additional transitions, such as AFSIW-SIW and SIW-conductor-backed coplanar waveguide, applied in existing AFSIW circuits. The proposed power divider with a second-order bandpass filtering response is fabricated and measured at 5.5 GHz. The measurement results show that this circuit has a minimum insertion loss of 1 dB, 3-dB fractional bandwidth of 11.2%, and return loss exceeding 11 dB.
This paper presents a novel type soft switching PWM power frequency AC-AC converter using bidirectional active switches or single phase utility frequency AC-high frequency AC matrix converter. This converter can directly convert utility frequency AC (UFAC, 50Hz/60Hz) power to high frequency AC (HFAC) power ranging more than 20kHz up to 100kHz. A novel soft switching PWM prototype of high frequency multi-resonant PWM controlled UFAC-HFAC matrix converter using antiparallel one-chip reverse blocking IGBTs manufactured by IXYS corp. is based on the soft switching resonance with asymmetrical duty cycle PWM strategy. This single phase UFAC-HFAC matrix converter has some remarkable features as electrolytic capacitor DC busline linkless topology, unity power factor correction and sine-wave line current shaping, simple configuration with minimum circuit components, high efficiency and downsizing. This series load resonant UFAC-HFAC matrix converter, incorporating bidirectional active power switches is developed and implemented for high efficiency consumer induction heated food cooking appliances in home uses and business-uses. Its operating performances as soft switching operating ranges and high frequency effective power regulation characteristics are illustrated and discussed on the basis of simulation and experimental results.

In designing System Protection Schemes (SPSs) in power systems, protecting transmission network against extreme undesired conditions becomes a significant challenge in mitigating the transmission line overloading. This paper presents an intelligent Special Protection and Control Scheme (SPCS) using of Differential Evolution with Adaptive Mutation (DEAM) approach to obtain the optimum generation rescheduling to solve the transmission line overloading problem in system contingency conditions. DEAM algorithm employs the attraction-repulsion idea that is applied in the electromagnetism-like algorithm to support the mutation process of the conventional Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Different N-1 contingency conditions under base and increase load demand are considered in this paper. Simulation results have been compared with those acquired from Genetic Algorithm (GA) application. Minimum severity index has been considered as the objective function. The final results show that the presented DEAM method offers better performance than GA in terms of faster convergence and less generation fuel cost. IEEE 30-bus test system has been used to prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.
Korea is a mountainous country, with as much as 70% of the area is covered by hills and mountains. This geography places constraints on the minimum radius of curvature for the rail network. It was expected that the speed of trains could be enhanced on the existing railway network without a huge investment in infrastructure by using tilting trains. The development of tilting trains in Korea started in 2001 as research & development project. A 6-car prototype test tilting train, called the Tilting Train eXpress (TTX), was built in December 2006 and experimental trials began in 2007. TTX has distributed power, is designed to run at 200 km/h, and has a planned service speed of 180 km/h. In this paper, we first describe the performance of tilting train, and then present the estimated running times, and the time saving compared with today's conventional trains and non-tilting trains, based on the Jungang line. So the time saving could be separated into two effects by higher track top-speed and tilting devices.

In this paper, we have analyzed the effect of interference between ultra-wideband(UWB) and intelligent transport systems(ITS). The maximum possible UWB emission power and minimum possible distance between UWB devices and ITS are found. In order to analyze the interference, we employ the Monte-Carlo(MC) method. We consider six situations, which are indoor office line-of-sight(LOS), indoor office non-line-of-sight(NLOS), indoor residential LOS, indoor residential NLOS, outdoor rural LOS, and outdoor rural NLOS environments. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that coexistence between UWB and ITS devices can be realized in accordance with the emission mask of 19.3 dB for indoor application or 19.3 dB for an image system. And in the outdoors, coexistence between UWB and ITS devices can be realized if the emission mask is at least 1.6 dB for vehicles' radar systems.
