An Analog Maximum, Median, and Minimum Circuit in Current-mode

  • In this paper, the CMOS integrated circuit technique for implementing current-mode maximum and minimum operations scheme is described. The maximum and minimum operations are incorporated into the same scheme with parallel processing. Using this scheme as the basic unit, an analog three-input maximum, median, and minimum circuit is designed. The performance of the proposed circuit shows a very sharp transfer characteristic and high accuracy. The proposed circuit achieves a high-speed operation, which is suitable for real-time systems. The PSPICE simulation results demonstrating the characteristic of the proposed circuit are included.

  • Bang-bang control law provides the optimal solution for a minimum-time control problem, but ignores the intermediate path except for the initial and final points. In this paper, a near minimum-time suboptimal fuzzy logic controller is introduced that can control the intermediate path. A dynamic model for a system is established using the average dynamics method of linearization. System model is continuously updated over the control time periods. This makes it suitable for high speed or variable payload applications. Bang-bang control theory is modified and used to derive the preliminary control law. A fuzzy logic algorithm is then applied to adjust and find the best solution. The solution will provide the suboptimal minimum-time control law which can avoid obstacles in the workspace.

A Study on Tensile Properties and HAZ Softening Depending on the Amount of Heat Input in MIG Welding of Al6082-T6 (Al6082-T6의 MIG용접부에서 입열량에 따른 열영향부의 연화와 인장특성에 관한 연구)

  • Al6082-T6 is widely used because of its corrosion resistance and excellent strength. HAZ softening occurs in MIG welding process for this aluminium alloys because this aluminium alloy is heated to higher temperature than its aging temperature during welding. Therefore, low heat input and minimum standard deviation of heat input are required for narrow HAZ width and, for higher strength of welds. In this study, Al6082-T6 was used to examine for HAZ softening with various heat input in aluminium MIG welding. For weldments, micro hardness was measured and tensile test was carried out. Minimum hardness was increased at high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min in welding speed comparing with 40cm/min. Also, in case of high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min, tensile strength of weldments was increased about 10% comparing with low speed welding(40cm/min).

A Study on the Impact of Slow Steaming on Containership Operations under the Carbon Intensity Indicator Regulation

  • As there is growing concern about the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced several regulations targeting reductions in carbon dioxide emissions of 50% by 2050. This study pays particular attention to the carbon intensity indicator (CII) and investigates the impact of slow steaming, one of the short-term measures in the regulation, on containership operations. To this end, a dataset of 8 containerships with various ages and sizes was collected. Based on operation data in 2021, the CII ratings of the containerships were estimated in the business-as-usual scenario for the 2023-2030 period. Then, the speed reductions required to keep the minimum CII rating were calculated for individual containerships. Finally, working day losses resulting from the speed reductions were calculated. The findings in this study were threefold. First, it was found that containerships will undergo degradation in the CII rating every 3 or 4 years without slow steaming. Second, a speed reduction of 2 knots between 2023 and 2030 is required to keep the minimum CII rating. Finally, speed reductions result in the loss of as many as 6 or 7 working days per year.

  • Considering an integral equation governing the motion of unfolding fin, an algebraic equation was acquired to get estimated minimum deployment energy required for the successful fin unfolding under the given wind condition. To complete the integration of moment, some approximations had to be introduced particularly to frictional moment and aerodynamic damping for which deployment angular speed of the unfolding fin was modelled as a function of deployment angle only with assumed profile using expected maximum angular speed. Technique for the estimation of the minimum required deployment energy was finalized by introducing the ideal deployment angular speed representing work done by the fin unfolding device alone during fin unfolding and was confirmed by comparing results from simulation with various aerodynamic conditions and profiles of the hinge torque.

A Study on Decision of Minimum Required Channel Width Considering Ship Types by Fast Time Simulation (배속 시뮬레이션 기반의 선종별 최소 항로 폭에 관한 연구)

  • Waterway design should prioritize appropriate channel width to ensure preferential safe passage for the arrival and departure of vessels. To calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage a comprehensive review of several factors is required. These factors include vessel maneuverability, determined by vessel size, type and speed; environmental factors such as wind, tide, and wave action; human factors, including personal experience and operator judgment as well as marine traffic and navigation support facilities for decision making. However, the Korean channel width design standard is based only on vessel length, and requires improvement when compared with the standards of PIANC, USA, and Japan. This study aims to estimate the appropriate channel width required for one-way traffic in a straight channel, considering various vessel and environmental factors, using Fast Time Simulation (FTS). When the wind speed is 25 knots, with a current speed of 2 knots and a normal vessel speed of 10 knots FTS shows that a 150K GT Cruise Ship requires a minimum channel width of 0.67-0.91 the vessel length (L), whereas a 120K TEU Container Ship and a 300K DWT VLCC require 0.79-1.17 and 1.02-1.59, respectively. Such results can be used to calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage as an improved Korean design standard.

A study on the northern sea route safety convoy using ship handling simulation (선박조종시뮬레이션을 이용한 북극해 안전 호송에 관한 연구)

  • Due to global warming it is estimated that the arctic ocean route will be avaliable and traffic will increase by approximately year 2030. However, most navigation in the arctic is based on the ice breaker captains'orders, there is no exact measurement of convoy speed and distance between ships. So, this research was conducted to find out the minimum safe separation distance and minimum breaking distance via ship controling simulations, and the results are as stated. For breaking distances, for ships that have a lead distance which is 2~4 times the width of the ship and traveling less than 7 knots, crash astern and crash astern & hard rudder showed no significant difference. But ships traveling at 10 knots there was a decrease in breaking distance of 1L, from 3.5L to 2.5L. By analyzing 10 subject ships by crash astern the breaking distance for 5 knots is 0.98L~1.8L, for 8 knots is 1.9L~4.0L. The minimum safe separation distance in narrow sea-ways is 6L, but as the arctic sea-way is only one-way 3L is required. As the result, it is found that in the arctic the safe escort speed is less than 5 knots, if the escort speed is 8knots or more and by using crash astern & hard rudder to break the safe distance should be kept at 3.4L.

  • The existing Swash Plate Type Axial Piston Motor rapidly drops efficiency at high speed in comparison with low speed. This is the reason why the motor was designed only in a viewpoint of minimum of power supply. But, in this paper, the motor which was optimally designed in a veiwpoint not only power supply but also load capacitancy, flow loss volume, axial stiffness and tilting stiffness keeps up high efficiency at high speed.

Effect of Turning Characteristics of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships on Collision Avoidance (자율운항선박의 선회특성이 충돌회피에 미치는 영향)

  • Identifying the effect of turning characteristics on collision avoidance for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) can provide a key to avoid the collision of MASS. The purpose of this study was to derive a method to identify the effect of turning characteristics, which can be changed by various rudder angles and the ship's speed, on collision avoidance. The turning circle was observed using a mathematical model of a 161-meter-long ship, and it was analyzed that the turning circle had an effect on collision avoidance through numerical simulations of collision avoidance for four collision situations of two ships. The evaluation results using the two variables, the minimum relative distance between two ships and the minimum time at the minimum relative distance, demonstrated that the rudder angle has a major influence on the change of the minimum relative distance, and the ship's speed has a major influence on the change of the minimum time. The evaluation method proposed in this study was expected to be applicable to collision avoidance as a measures in remote control of MASS.

Optimal Design of a High Speed Carbon Composite Air Spindle (고속 공기 주축부를 위한 복합재료 주축의 최적 설계)

  • For the stable operation of high speed air spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are net appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high speed spindle composed of carbon fiber epoxy composite shaft and steel flange was designed for maximum critical speed considering minimum static deflection and radial expansion due to bending load and centrifugal force during high speed relation. The stacking angle and the stacking thickness of the composite shaft and the adhesive bonding length of the 7teel flange were selected through vibrational analysis considering static and thermal loads due to temperature rise.
