  • In optical soliton transmission systems with nonlinear dispersive materials, which is utilized for ultra-long and high bit rate transmission, it is shown that the value of initial time difference between adjacent solitons is analyzed for optimum bit rate. The method is inducted by uncorrelation condition with minimum interaction forces in initial covariance coefficient between adjacent solitons. When the initial time difference is 6 times of soliton pulse width by the results, it is shown that the reliability is maintained with more than 90% within transmission length of soliton period. multiplied by 93.

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), which are becoming more and more important in ocean exploitation tasks, needs energy conservation urgently when sailing the complex mission path in long time cruise. As hull lines optimization design becomes the key factor, which closely related with resistance, in AUV preliminary design stage, uncertainty parameters need to be considered seriously. In this research, Myring axial symmetry revolution body with parameterized expression is assumed as AUV hull lines, and its travelling resistance is obtained via modified DATCOM formula. The problems of AUV hull lines design for the minimum travelling resistance with uncertain parameters are studied. Based on reliability-based optimization design technology, Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) for high quality level is conducted, and is proved more reliability for the actual environment disturbance.

  • In this paper, the capability index is introduced in order to improve the reliability of new concept machine tools and the method to improve the machine accuracy from the analysis of cutting process, statistical methodology and influence factors are proposed. In addition, the rib structure of bed and column in machine tools is analyzed by using the thermal impact method in order to analogize the rib pattern which has the small thermal deformation under thermal boundary condition. In the analysis of column rib structure, thermal boundary condition is separated to heat conduction and heat transfer to appropriate real boundary condition. Finally, performance chart of bed and column rib structure is provided for designer to estimate each rib pattern and select rib structure appropriating to thermal condition.

  • Suppose a system with m components is subjected to a random stress. We consider the estimation of reliability when data consist of random samples from the stress distribution and the strength distributions. All the distributions are assumed to be independent exponential with unknown scale parameters. An explicit form of system reliability and the minimun variance unbiased estimator are obtained. The asymptotic distribution is also obtained by expanding the minimum variance unbiased estimator about the maximum likelihood estimator and establishing their equivalance. The performance of the two estimators is compared by Monte Carlo Simulation.

  • Cost-effectiveness in design is considered for determining the target reliability of concrete bridges under seismic actions. This objective can be achieved based on the economic optimization of the expected life-cycle cost of a bridge, which includes initial cost, direct losses, and indirect losses of a bridge due to strong earthquakes over its lifetime. A separating factor is defined to consider the redundancy of a transportation network. The Park-Ang damage model is employed to define the damage of a bridge under seismic action, and a Monte Carlo method based on the DRAIN-2DX program is developed to assess the failure probability of a bridge. The results for an example bridge analyzed in this paper show that the optimal target failure probability depends on the traffic volume carried by the bridge and is between 1.0×10/sup -3/ to 3.0×10/sup -3/ over a life of 50 years.

  • In this paper, we study the estimation of reliability function for a parallel system with k dependent exponential components. We assume that the failure of one of the k components changes the life distribution of the remaining components. Also, we compare with Cramer-Rna lower bound for variances of the minimum variance unbiased estimator, and the mean square errors of the maximum likelihood estimator of reliability system with the through the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Usually, there are many uncertainties regarding the error of an assumed load, material properties, member size, and structure analysis in a structure, and it may have a direct influence on the qualities of optimal design of structures. Probabilistic analysis has developed rapidly into a desirable process and structural reliability analysis is an increasingly important tool that assists engineers to consider uncertainties during the design, construction and life of a structure to calculate its probability of failure. This study deals with the applications of two optimization techniques to solve the reliability-based optimization problem of structures. The reliability-based optimization problem was formulated as a minimization of the structural volume subject to the constraints on the values of componential reliability index determined by the AFOSM approach. This presented method may be a useful tool for the reliability-based design optimization of structures.

  • Railway vehicle equipment goes back again to the state just before when failure by the repair. In repairable system, we are interested in the failure interval. As such, a statistical model of the point process, NHPP power law is often used for the reliability analysis of a repairable system. In order to derive a quantitative reliability value of repairable system, we analyze the failure data of the air brake system of the train line 7. The quantitative value is the failure intensity function that was modified, converted into a cost-rate function. Finally we studied the optimal number and optimal interval in which the costs to a minimum consumption point as cost-rate function. The minimum cost point was 194,613 (won/day) during the total life cycle of the braking system, then the optimal interval were 2,251days and the number of optimal preventive maintenance were 7 times. Additionally, we were compared to the cost of a currently fixed interval(4Y) and the optimum interval then the optimal interval is 3,853(won/day) consuming smaller. In addition, judging from the total life, "fixed interval" is smaller than 1,157 days as "optimal interval".

  • Existing methods to estimate the probability of seismic pounding occurrence of adjacent buildings do not account for nonlinear behavior or only apply to simple lumped mass systems. The present study proposes an efficient method based on subset simulation for fragility and risk assessment of seismic pounding occurrence between nonlinear adjacent buildings neglecting pounding effects with application to finite element models. The proposed method is first applied to adjacent buildings modeled as elastoplastic systems with substantially different dynamic properties for different structural parameters. Seismic pounding fragility and risk of adjacent frame structures with different floor levels is then assessed, paying special attention to modeling the non-linear material behavior in finite element models. Difference in natural periods and impact location are identified to affect the pounding fragility simultaneously. The reliability levels of the minimum code-specified separation distances are also determined. In addition, the incremental dynamic analysis method is extended to assess seismic pounding fragility of the adjacent frame structures, resulting in higher fragility estimates for separation distances larger than the minimum code-specified ones in comparison with the proposed method.
