  • Energy consumption reduction has become an important key word in manufacturing that can be achieved through the efficient and optimal use of raw materials and natural resources, and minimization of the harmful effects on nature or human society. The successful implementation of this concept can only be possible by considering a product's entire life cycle and even its disposal from the early design stage. To accomplish this idea with milling, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) strategies and cutting conditions are analyzed through process modeling and experiments. In this study, a model to predict the cutting energy in the milling process is used to find the cutting conditions, which minimize the cutting energy through a Kriging meta-modeling process. The MQL scheme is developed first to reduce the amount of cutting oil and costs used in the cutting process, which is then employed for the entire modeling and experiments.

  • Cutting fluids used for superfinishing are usually mineral based oils With sulfur and chlorine additives. These cutting fluids are an environmental hazard and can adversely affect the health of personnel on the shop floor. The present investigation was undertaken to explore the possible alternative use of environmentally-conscious cutting fluids for superfinishing. Unlike mineral oils, these environmentally-conscious cutting fluids are biodegradable and non-hazardous. Experiments were conducted for testing an ester oil manufactured by Accu-Lube applied in miniscule amounts using the Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) technique. A significant improvement in stock removal was found with the 6 stones tested. The specific energy values associated with the process were also significantly lower than those obtained previously with conventional straight oils and the water based synthetic fluid, indicative of better lubrication, while the surface roughness was comparable. These tests prove that MQL with ester oils can be a very effective environmentally-conscious alternative to conventional straight oils.

  • As environmental restrictions have continuously become more strict, it has emphasized development of environment-friendly technologies. In cutting technology, it has been well recognized that cutting fluids might have undesirable effects on worker's health and working environment and, hence, recently there have been numerous attempts to minimize harmful effects of cutting fluids on environments. To minimize the use of cutting fluids in machining, conventional cutting fluids have been replaced with the technologies of pressurized cold air and minimum quantity lubrication(MQL). Compared with milling, turning is a continuous cutting process, where tools are continuously heated up and lack of lubricity could lead to tool wear and deteriorated surface roughness. In this study, it has been investigated how tool wear and surface roughness could be affected by cutting conditions, supply and cooling methods. The experimental results show that MQL technology is able to minimize harmful effects of conventional cutting fluids.

  • This paper is studied on the effect of TiAlN coated Ball End Mill and MQL(Minimum Quantity Lubrication) cutting condition on cutting characteristic of high hardness steels. KP4 steels[HRC32] and STD11[HRC60] heat treated steels were used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill and single and multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill were utilized in the cutting tests. MQL device was used to spray botanical oil coolant. Result showed that TiAlN coated ball end mill were increased the cutting length than WC-Co ball end mill in the cutting speed[$245{\sim}320m/min$] about $2.3{\sim}5.7$ times for KP4 steels and about $2.5{\sim}4.3$ times far STD11 heat treated steels. The multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill is good for KP4 steels than single layer coated.

  • The present work addresses the surface integrity and chip morphology in finish hard turning of AISI D3 steel under nanofluid assisted minimum quantity lubrication (NFMQL) condition. The surface integrity aspects include microhardness, residual stress, white layer formation, machined surface morphology, and surface roughness. This experimental investigation aims to explore the feasibility of low-cost multilayer (TiCN/Al2O3/TiN) coated carbide tool in hard machining applications and to assess the propitious role of minimum quantity lubrication using graphene nanoparticles enriched eco-friendly radiator coolant based nano-cutting fluid for machinability improvement of hardened steel. Combined approach of central composite design (CCD) - analysis of variance (ANOVA), desirability function analysis, and response surface methodology (RSM) have been subsequently employed for experimental investigation, predictive modelling and optimization of surface roughness. With a motivational philosophy of "Go Green-Think Green-Act Green", the work also deals with economic analysis, and sustainability assessment under environmental-friendly NFMQL condition. Results showed that machining with nanofluid-MQL provided an effective cooling-lubrication strategy, safer and cleaner production, environmental friendliness and assisted to improve sustainability.

  • Attempts are being made to investigate temperatures dependence of minimum ignition energy (MIE) based on concept of quantity of heat and thermal ignition theory. Regression equations for predicting MIE by means of temperature variations on the basis of statistical and mathematical methods are proposed. This study is undertaken to learn what proposed method is satisfactory hydrocarbons(propane and pentane). The proposed method has been tested and compared sucessfully with previously reported data in various journal.

  • This paper proposes a heuristic optimal solution of multicommodity transportation problem. The proposed algorithm has 3 steps. First the proposed algorithm transforms multicommodity transshipment problem to a general transportation problem, but if the problem is a multicommodity transportation problem, it is not transformed. And the multicommodity is disassembled to a single commodity. Second if it is a multicommodity transportation problem, the algorithm selects the minimum cost according to commodity, on the other hand if it is a multicommodity transshipment problem, the algorithm directly selects the minimum cost based on demand area. And the algorithm assigns carloadings to be satisfied the supply and demand quantity. The algorithm repeats these processes until a given demand quantity is satisfied. Last if it has a condition that is able to reduce the transportation expense, the proposed algorithm controls the assignment quantity of the initial value that got from the step 2. The proposed algorithm was applied to two multicommodity transportation problem and three multicommodity transshipment problem and it got more good result than an existing linear programming method.

  • The main objective of this research is to develop a model to select the optimal input service level for a distribution center - multi branch inventory distribution system. With the continuous review policy, the distribution center places an order for specific order quantity to an outside supplier, and the order quantity is replenished after a certain lead time. Also, each branch places an order for particular order quantity to the distribution center to satisfy the customer demands, and receives the replenishment after a lead time. When an out of stock condition occurs during an order cycle, a backorder is placed to the upper level to fill the unfilled demands. With these situation, variable demand and variable lead time are used for better industrial practice. Further, actual lead times with a generic lead time distribution are used in developing the control model. Under the actual lead time model, the customer service measures actually attained for the distribution center and each branch are explained as the effective customer service measures. Thus, throughout the optimal control (using computer search procedures), we can select the optimal input service levels for the distribution center and each branch to attain the effective service level for each branch which is consistent with the goal level of service for each branch. At the same time, the entire distribution system keeps minimum inventories.
