  • A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method is developed for electrostatic problems. To consider high order objective functions, we use 9-node finite element basis functions for analysis and DSA methods. As the design variables are parameterized with B-spline functions, smooth boundary variations are naturally obtained. To solve mesh entanglement problems during the optimization process, a mesh regularization scheme is employed. By minimizing the Dirichlet energy functional, mesh uniformity can be automatically achieved. In numerical examples for maximizing dielectrophoresis forces, the numerical results are compared with well-known electrode geometries and the obtained characteristics are discussed.

  • Recently, the importance of signal processing has become gradually significant, as the frequency of video media increases in various fields. However, numerous kinds of noise generated in the transmission and reception processes can possibly affect the signal information, and the noise removal is for that reason essential as a preprocessing step. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to remove the mixed noise which is composed of impulse noise and AWGN. This algorithm is used for image restoration by noise judgment for efficient noise removal in a complex noise environment, and the noise is removed by considering spatial characteristics and pixel variations. Simulation results show that unlike existing methods, the algorithm has excellent noise cancellation characteristics by minimizing both noise effects and consequently eliminating the mixed noise; for objective judgment, we compared and analyzed the data using PSNR and profile.

  • We address the sampling set selection problem for arbitrary graph signals such that the original graph signal is reconstructed from the signal values on the nodes in the sampling set. We introduce a variation difference as a new indirect metric that measures the error of signal variations caused by sampling process without resorting to the eigen-decomposition which requires a huge computational cost. Instead of directly minimizing the reconstruction error, we propose a simple and fast greedy selection algorithm that minimizes the variation differences at each iteration and justify the proposed reasoning by showing that the principle used in the proposed process is similar to that in the previous novel technique. We run experiments to show that the proposed method yields a competitive reconstruction performance with a substantially reduced complexity for various graphs as compared with the previous selection methods.

  • Simulation analysis may be the essential means to either evaluate performance of systems or optimize system parameters for new design. Including many variations for design and implementation, MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork) is one target area of such an analysis. Since every node, however, included in the network has mobility, one MANET could be overlapped or merged with another one which use a different transport protocol. In order to communicate among nodes in this case, the new merged network should configure paths and addresses in advance. Configuring paths and addresses generates much overheads which ultimately cause delay in communicating data. Performance analysis is required to improve the data transport performance by minimizing overheads. This paper proposes a sound address auto-configuration method which is based on an on-demand manner and then presents modeling and performance analysis of the method. NS-2 simulation results verify that the proposed method can not only alleviate overheads, which are inevitably generated for address auto-configuration processes, and but also decentralize them in time.

  • An agricultural drones are gradually increasing in utilization due to economic efficiency, and consist of a main frame in charge of flying spray system in charge of moving pesticide to control targets. Therefore, the environment and characteristics of crops should be considered when controlling pesticides using drones and conditions such as systematic flying altitude of flight, speed, and spray time should be changed accordingly. However, pest control work using agricultural drones has different spray effects depending on level the operation proficiency and spray impact. In addition, there are variations in operating standards and control efficiency for agricultural drones, which hinder the distribution of agricultural control drones in the field of pest control work. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the spraying characteristics of agricultural drones, apply the effective spraying time, interval and experimentally verify the system that can calculation of spray area compared to previous studies. Through this experimental verification, it is intended to apply the optimal control process by minimizing the obstacles to pest control work by applying the operation method and systematic figures to agricultural drones.

  • Owing to adverse weather conditions, there is a heightened focus on actively researching the regulation of the sowing date in field crop cultivation. Soybean, a prominent field crop with extensive acreage and production, is a photophilic and thermophilic crop characterized by short-day photoperiodism. Identifying the optimal sowing time is crucial for mitigating the effects of severe weather conditions on soybean yield. Precise control over the timing of soybean sowing is the key to minimizing yield reduction due to unfavorable weather conditions. Temperature, photoperiod, and their interplay are the most significant factors influencing soybean cultivation among various weather factors. We conducted an experiment using three Korean soybean cultivars with varied maturities (Hwangkeumol: early maturing and Daewonkong and Pungsannamulkong: late maturing) in 2013 and 2014. Our investigation covered aspects of soybean growth, development, yield components, isoflavones, and visual seed quality. Across all three varieties, isoflavone levels increased with later sowing dates, while other measured components exhibited significant variations based on the sowing date. This study also provides valuable insights for the selection of suitable cultivars that perform well in soybean cultivation at various durations of maturity.

  • Pig farming, a vital industry, necessitates proactive measures for early disease detection and crush symptom monitoring to ensure optimum pig health and safety. This review explores advanced thermal sensing technologies and computer vision-based thermal imaging techniques employed for pig disease and piglet crush symptom monitoring on pig farms. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive and efficient technology for measuring pig body temperature, providing advantages such as non-destructive, long-distance, and high-sensitivity measurements. Unlike traditional methods, IRT offers a quick and labor-saving approach to acquiring physiological data impacted by environmental temperature, crucial for understanding pig body physiology and metabolism. IRT aids in early disease detection, respiratory health monitoring, and evaluating vaccination effectiveness. Challenges include body surface emissivity variations affecting measurement accuracy. Thermal imaging and deep learning algorithms are used for pig behavior recognition, with the dorsal plane effective for stress detection. Remote health monitoring through thermal imaging, deep learning, and wearable devices facilitates non-invasive assessment of pig health, minimizing medication use. Integration of advanced sensors, thermal imaging, and deep learning shows potential for disease detection and improvement in pig farming, but challenges and ethical considerations must be addressed for successful implementation. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art technologies used in the pig farming industry, including computer vision algorithms such as object detection, image segmentation, and deep learning techniques. It also discusses the benefits and limitations of IRT technology, providing an overview of the current research field. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and farmers regarding IRT application in pig production, highlighting notable approaches and the latest research findings in this field.

  • The ichthyotoxic Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tides have caused great economic losses in the aquaculture industry in the waters of Korea and other countries. Predicting outbreak of C. polykrikoides red tides 1-2 weeks in advance is a critical step in minimizing losses. In the South Sea of Korea, large C. polykrikoides red tide patches have often been recorded offshore and transported to nearshore waters. To explore the processes of offshore C. polykrikoides red tides, temporal variations in 3-dimensional (3-D) distributions of red tide organisms and environmental parameters were investigated by analyzing 4,432 water samples collected from 2-5 depths of 60 stations in the South Sea, Korea 16 times from May to Nov, 2014. In the study area, the vegetative cells of C. polykrikoides were found as early as May 7, but C. polykrikoides red tide patches were observed from Aug 21 until Oct 9. Cochlodinium red tides occurred in both inner and outer stations. Prior to the occurrence of large C. polykrikoides red tides, the phototrophic dinoflagellates Prorocentrum donghaiense (Jun 12 to Jul 11), Ceratium furca (Jul 11 to Aug 21), and Alexandrium fraterculus (Aug 21) formed red tides in sequence, and diatom red tides formed 2-3 times without a certain distinct pattern. The temperature for the optimal growth of these four red tide dinoflagellates is known to be similar. Thus, the sequence of the maximum growth rates of P. donghaiense > C. furca > A. fraterculus > C. polykrikoides may be partially responsible for this sequence of red tides in the inner stations following high nutrients input in the surface waters because of heavy rains. Furthermore, Cochlodinium red tides formed and persisted at the outer stations when $NO_3$ concentrations of the surface waters were < $2{\mu}M$ and thermocline depths were >20 m with the retreat of deep cold waters, and the abundance of the competing red-tide species was relatively low. The sequence of the maximum swimming speeds and thus potential reachable depths of C. polykrikoides > A. fraterculus > C. furca > P. donghaiense may be responsible for the large C. polykrikoides red tides after the small blooms of the other dinoflagellates. Thus, C. polykrikoides is likely to outgrow over the competitors at the outer stations by descending to depths >20 m and taking nutrients up from deep cold waters. Thus, to predict the process of Cochlodinium red tides in the study area, temporal variations in 3-D distributions of red tide organisms and environmental parameters showing major nutrient sources, formation and depth of thermoclines, intrusion and retreat of deep cold waters, and the abundance of competing red tide species should be well understood.

  • The objective of our study was to predict future cultivation areas for walnut trees (Juglans sinensis), using the cultivation suitability map provided from Korea Forest Service and MaxEnt modelling under future climate conditions. The climate conditions in 2050s and 2070s were computed using the Regional Climate Prediction (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios with the HadGEM2-AO model. As a result, compared to the present area, the cultivation area of the western Korea including Chungcheongnamdo, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do decreased on a national scale under RCP 4.5, and those of Gyeongsangbukdo and part of Gyeongsangnam-do decreased under RCP 8.5. However, Gangwon-do which is located in higher altitude over 600 meters than other regions showed increases in cultivation areas of 18.3% under RCP 4.5 and of 56.6% under RCP 8.5 by 2070s. The predicted map showed large regional variations in the cultivation areas with climate change. From the analysis of current top ranking areas, the cultivation areas in Gimcheon-si and Yeongdong-gun dramatically decreased by 2070s under RCP 4.5 and 8.5; that of Gongju-si decreased more under RCP 4.5; and those of Muju-gun and Cheonan-si sustained the areas by 2070s under both scenarios. The results from this study can be helpful for providing a guide for minimizing the loss of walnut production and proactively improving productivity and quality of walnuts with regard to unavoidable climate change in South Korea.

  • In this paper, we propose a new shot boundary detection method which is optimized for news video story parsing. This new news shot boundary detection method was designed to satisfy all the following requirements: 1) minimizing the incorrect data in data set for anchor shot detection by improving the recall ratio 2) detecting abrupt cuts and gradual transitions with one single algorithm so as to divide news video into shots with one scan of data set; 3) classifying shots into static or dynamic, therefore, reducing the search space for the subsequent stage of anchor shot detection. The proposed method, based on singular value decomposition with incremental clustering and mercer kernel, has additional desirable features. Applying singular value decomposition, the noise or trivial variations in the video sequence are removed. Therefore, the separability is improved. Mercer kernel improves the possibility of detection of shots which is not separable in input space by mapping data to high dimensional feature space. The experimental results illustrated the superiority of the proposed method with respect to recall criteria and search space reduction for anchor shot detection.
