  • A scene change detection which involves finding a cut between two consecutive shots is an important step for video indexing and retrieval. This paper proposes an algorithm for fast and accurate detection of abrupt scene changes in an MPEG compressed domain with minimal decoding requirements arid computational effort. The proposed method compares two successive DC images of I-frames for finding the GOP (group of picture) which contain a scene change and uses macroblock-coded type information contained in B-frames to detect the exact frame where the scene change occurred. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has better detection performance, such as precision and recall rate, than the existing method using all DC images. The algorithm has the advantage of speed, simplicity and accuracy. In addition, it requires less amount of storage.

  • As DNA microarrays are widely used recently, the amount of microarray data is exponentially increasing. Until now, however, no domestic system is available for the efficient management of such data. Because the number of experimental data in a specific laboratory is limited, it is necessary to avoid redundant experiments and to accumulate the results using a shared data management system for microarrays. In this paper, a system named WEMA (WEb management of Micro Arrays) was designed and implemented to manage and process the microarray data. WEMA system was designed to include the basic feature of MIAME (Minimal Information About a Microarray Experiment), and general data units were also defined in the system in order to systematically manage the data. The WEMA system has three main features: efficient management of microarray data, integration of input/ouput data, and metafile processing. The system was tested with actual microarray data produced by a molecular biology laboratory, and we found that the biologists could systematically manage and easily analyze the microarray data. As a consequence, the researchers could reduce the cost of data exchange and communication.

  • In this paper, we present our recent effort on the development of a portable OCS system (SCH-mOCS), which provides minimal but essential functionalities of conventional OCS systems. SCH-mOCS is targeted for the environment where Internet connection is not available and fast processing of essential patient information is needed. The main usage could be found at the outdoor environment, such as voluntary medical services at challenged regions. The target of the first usage of the system is in the rural area of Cambodia where medical service and ICT infrastructure is poor. We have been conducting voluntary medical services for 15 years in Cambodia, where the services usually run for 3 days and include outpatient diagnosis/consultation, medication, and simple surgeries. This medical service started in 2002, where about 20 SoonChunHyang University Bucheon Hospital staffs (doctors, nurses, and pharmacists) participated. We realized that a system like SCH-mOCS is needed: we have to consult many patients in a short period, so that a prompt response and prescription to the patients are very important. However, the conventional OCS system is not suitable, because the service is usually conducted outdoor environment where Internet connected computers cannot be installed. Moreover, since the service needs only a subset of the conventional hospital information system and fast system response, application of a full OCS is not practical. The adequate system is a bare minimal OCS system, with very simple and quickly manageable patient admission, consultation, and prescription functionalities. In this paper, we describe hardware as well as the software aspect of a mini-OCS we have developed for the purpose. We named the system SCH-mOCS (SoonChunHyang mini-OCS). We also describe the usage scenario of SCH-mOCS in order to demonstrate that the system is general enough to apply for other similarly challenged regions.

  • We have designed a real-time Cardiac digital substraction angiography system (C-DSA) and tested the system for the diagnosis of Cardiac patients. The system was developed by interfacing a radiographic angiography system to a computerized motional image analysis system. This new cardiac DSA can perform the real time processing of averaging and subtraction of the 32 image frames to measure the volume changes of the left ventricle after elimination of motional artrifacts, caused by the heart contraction of beats per minute in average. Each frame has a resolution of 512 x 512 pixels and 256 gray levels. Two image data with maximal and minimal volume were moved to the interfaced IBM PC computer system by high speed computer link line for computation of the heart's contraction parameters. First, the boundary of the left ventricule was detected using a dynamic programming of the gray levels, and its volume was computered to determine the parameters, such as the maximal volume of end-diastolic volume (EDV), the minimal volume of end systolic volume (ESV), and ejection fraction (EF).

  • From the state table of sequential machines, Roomers) obtained minimal k co-mapping chain(k-CC) and proposed an algorithm obtaining binary partitions which were seed partitions of S-shift registers. By comparing and processing bits simply, this paper obtained two different algorithms more efficient than that of Roome's for obtaining such binary partitions and defined the concept of the triple pair of the basis partitions. By using the concept, given set of basis partitions was reduced to the set containing elements of the triple pair only and the algorithm became quite simple.

  • Photonics offers a solution to data communication between logic devices in computing systems; however, the integration of photonic components into electronic chips is rather limited due to their size incompatibility. Dimensions of photonic components are therefore being forced to be scaled down dramatically to achieve a much higher system performance. To integrate these nano-photonic components, surface plasmon-polaritons and/or energy transfer mechanisms are used to form plasmonic chips. In this paper, the operating principle of plasmonic waveguide devices is reviewed within the mid-infrared spectral region at the 2 ${\mu}m$ to 5 ${\mu}m$ range, including lossless signal propagation by introducing gain. Experimental results demonstrate that these plasmonic devices, of sizes approximately half of the operating free-space wavelengths, require less gain to achieve lossless propagation. Through optimization of device performance by means of methods such as the use of new plasmonic waveguide materials that exhibit a much lower minimal loss value, these plasmonic devices can significantly impact electronic systems used in data communications, signal processing, and sensors industries.

  • We propose a reconciliation sublayer (RS)-based lane and traffic control protocol for energy-efficient 40-G/100-G Ethernet. The RS performs active/inactive lane control and data rate adaptation depending on active lane information received from the upper layer. This protocol does not result in a processing delay in the media access control layer, nor is an additional buffer required at the physical layer for dynamic lane control. It ensures minimal delay and no overhead for the exchange of control frames and provides a simple adaptive data rate.

  • Minimally processed lotus root was stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ followed by dipping in distilled water, 3% ascorbic acid, 1% citric acid, 1% acetic acid, 1% EDTA, 2% lactic acid and 3% malic acid. The weight loss, color, soluble solids, pH, vitamin C and sensory characteristic were measured during storage period. The rate of weight loss decreased in the minimally processed lotus root. ΔL was changed slightly after 1 week storage and 1% acetic acid and 1% EDTA especially retarded a little retardation in browning during storage. Soluble solids was changed slightly, but decreased after 2 week storage in lotus root treated with 2% lactic acid and 3% malic acid. pH increased but vitamin C decreased during storage. The organoleptic quality of lotus root treated 1% EDTA showed the best by sensory evaluation.

  • A cyclic shop is a production system that repeatedly produces identical sets of jobs, called minimal part sets, in the same loading and processing sequence. We consider a version of cyclic shop where the operations are processed and unloaded within time limits, so called a time window. We model the shop using an event graph model, a class of Petri nets. To represent the time window constraint, we introduce places with negative time delays. From the shop modeling graph, we develop a linear system model based on the max- plus algebra and characterize the conditions on the existence of a stable schedule.
