  • Three-dimensional (3D) micro/nanostructures based on soft elastomers have received extensive attention in recent years, owing to their potential and advanced applicability. Designing and fabricating 3D micro/nanostructures are crucial for applications in diverse engineering fields, such as sensors, harvesting devices, functional surfaces, and adhesive patches. However, because of their structural complexity, fabricating soft-elastomer-based 3D micro/nanostructures with a low cost and simple process remains a challenge. Bio-inspired designs that mimic natural structures, or replicate their micro/nanostructure surfaces, have greatly benefited in terms of low-cost fabrication, scalability, and easy control of geometrical parameters. This review highlights recent advances in 3D micro/nanostructures inspired by nature for diverse potential and advanced applications, including flexible pressure sensors, energy-harvesting devices based on triboelectricity, superhydrophobic/-philic surfaces, and dry/wet adhesive patches.

  • Cattle behavior detection system based on Internet of Things is designed and implemented by using gyroscope and acceleration sensor, Arduino pro-mini and bluetooth module. The implemented system measures cattle's moving and the measured data are transmitted to smart phone by bluetooth module. They are displayed by 2-dimensional graph on the smart phone and the number of cattle's step are calculated from the graph. The detected and gathered data from the system are analyzed by the proposed algorithm to decide which cows are in the estrus or not, and the proposed system can be used to increase the success rate of artificial insemination in normal estrus by detecting cow's behaviors such as the number of steps and jumping. In this paper, the implemented cattle behavior detecting system are strapped on cattle's leg and it measures cattle behaviors for determining that a cattle is estrus or not by the proposed algorithm. In the future research, the system which lengthens communication distance and increases the number of cattle under the test will be considered and also the measured data will be database for cattle research.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to develop an apparatus which can take a facial image by self-operated capturing technique. The user can obtain one's facial image immediately after adjusting facial tilt and focusing distance. The system has been designed for classifying Sasang typology based on facial image. Methods : The system is composed of a Webcam, one-way glass mirror and mini LCD. The Webcam takes a facial image which is displayed on the mini LCD. Then the user can see and adjust to the right position in the real time through the image mirror-reflected from the mini LCD. The optical sensor is used to estimate the proper focusing distance. To verify the performance of the system, 11 characteristic points on the facial image are used and compared with high performance DSLR camera(D700) by applying the coefficient of variance and Bland-Altman Plot. Results : The developed system and D700 show enough agreement with the small coefficient of variance to analyse constitutional types with a facial im mage. However, the result of Bland-Altman plot shows that the width parameters have distortions owing to short focusing distance. Conclusions : The system is expected to be utilized on u-healthcare services for home environment after improving the distortion in the width parameters.

  • A calibration jet system using separate blower is developed to calibrate a flow sensor effectively. Designed open circuit type mini calibration jet system, which has the dimension of $0.5m(W){\times}1.17m(H)$ is small compared with conventional calibration jet systems. The exit of nozzle has exchangeable contractions with a cross section area of $38.5cm^2$ , and a cross section area of $113.1cm^2$, respectively. The ranges of wind speed at exit of exchangeable nozzles are $7.5{\sim}42\;m/s$ and $1.8{\sim}16.5\;m/s$, respectively. The input power for the high pressure blower is 1.18kW. The turning vanes for corner was rolled flat plate parallel to the flow direction. The flow conditioning screen was located immediately downstream of the wide-angle diffuser. The honeycomb and two flow conditioning screens were located in the stagnation chamber. From the economical point of view and the simplicity of the calibration jet system set up and handling, it can be said that the developed calibration jet system is an effective calibration jet system. This system can also be used to calibrate the flow sensor with high resolution.

  • Gas-sensor array technology, which has been much utilized in the field of food technology by the name of 'electronic nose' is drawing attention in diagnosing lung cancer based on the analysis of the exhaled human breath. Much understanding has been accomplished about the composition of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the human exhaled breath, in spite of some variations depending on research groups due mainly to lack of the standardization of the sensing procedures. Since VOCs may be produced during the process of cellular metabolism, difference in the cellular metabolism between healthy cells and lung cancer cells are expected to be reflected on the composition variation of the exhaled VOCs. Several studies have attempted to apply the gas-sensor array technology to lung cancer analysis using many different types of sensors including metal oxide, carbon black-polymer composite, surface acoustic wave, and gold nanoparticles. In this mini-review VOC as biomarkers, sensor array technology and application of the array technology for the diagnosis of cancer disease have been described.

  • Background : An assessment of the presence and the degree of reversibility of airflow obstruction is clinically important in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the time responses of spirometric parameters in response to bronchodilator have not been well investigated. Methods: We studied 15 patients with asthma. Spirometric and mini-Wright peak expiratory flow measurements were performed at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes after using single dose($200{\mu}g$) of inhaled bronchodilator, salbutamol. Results : The mean values of forced expiratory volume in one second($FEV_1$) and forced vital capicaty(FVC) were significantly increased at 60 minutes after using bronchodilator in comparison to 15 minutes. And peak expiratory flow rate measured by either mass flow sensor or mini-Wright peak flow meter were significantly increased at 45 minutes after using bronchodilator in comparison to 15 minutes. Conclusions : To appropriate evaluation of the bronchodilator response in patients with reversible airflow limitation, it would be useful measuring either $FEV_1$ or PEF at the later time point 60 or 45 minutes in comparison to 15 minutes after using bronchodilator.

  • This study was to verify and calibrate seven kinds of soil water sensors for volumetric soil water content(VSWC) measurement under field. Types of sensors were TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) and FDR(Frequency Domain Reflectometry). Two kinds of TDR were TRIME(profile type), and Mini-TRASE(rod type). Five kinds of FDR were EasyAG, EnviroSCAN, PR-1(profile type), and WET-1(rod type). VSWC by TRIME and Mini-TRASE compared with VSWC by soil core showed the standard error of about 2.4%, and 1.4% which is the smallest value among all the sensors used in the experiment, respectively. The errors of EasyAG and EnviroSCAN analyzed with scaled frequency(SF) were about 2.6%, and 2.8% and those by 1 versus 1 correspondence were about 2.6%, and 2.6%, respectively. WET-1 showed about 2.0% of error, which is the smallest value among errors by FDR sensors. PR-1 with the error of about 4.7% should be hard for application in field. Therefore, users on soil water sensors have to take into consideration the errors of sensors revealed after the calibration for the correct measurement of VSWC in field. The rest except for PR-1 among the sensors could be used for VSWC measurement with 1.4~2.6% error.

  • This paper develops an OBD Diagnostic Program (Program) using Visual Studio (C#), which was used to diagnosis malfunction information from OBD-II system vehicles. We accomplished this using the Program, Diagnostic tests, Board (STN1110), FTDI Basic Cable, Mini USB Cable, OBD Data Cable, and both hybrid and regular vehicles. The Program tests real-time data output, DTC output, sensor value output, engine RPM, waveform data, OBD type check, PID inspection, and whole monitoring. We found vehicles used in this research had 19 PIDs, which was within OBD-II regulations. We also gathered data on control and diagnostic code regulated by OBD-II system, such as, sensor output value, engine RPM, DTC output, each PID analytic value, OBD type, fuel mode, and whole monitoring result value. Using the data collected through the Program appropriately can lead to more effective diagnostic practices and contribute to education.

  • Recently, the small-size mobile robots with remote-control are rapidly growth which market of mobile is increased in the world. Especially, the smart-phones are widely used for interface device in the small size of a mobile robot. The research goal is control system design which is applied to miniaturization of a mobile robot using smart-phone and it can be confirmed performance for designed system. Meanwhile, the fabrication of mini-mobile robot can also be remote-control operation through the WIFI performance of a smart-phone. The smart-phone is used to remote-control for robot operation which control data transmit to robot via the WIFI network. To drive the robot, we can observe by the smart-phone screen and it can easily adjust the robot drive condition and direction by smart-phone button. Consequentially, there was no malfunction and images were printed out well. However, in drive, because of blind spot, robot was bumped into obstacle. Therefore, the additional test is necessary to sensor for blind spot which sensor can be equipment to mobile robot. In addition, the experiment with robot object recognition is needed.

  • In order to efficiently analysis the stability of a slope, measuring the shear strength of soil is needed. The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is not appropriate for a slope inspection due to cost and weights. One of the ways to effectively measure the N-value is the Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT). This study was performed to develop a minimized multi-function sensors that can easily estimate CPT values and Volumetric Water Content. N value with multi-fuction sensor DCPT showed -2.5 ~ +3.9% error compared with the SPT N value (reference value) in the field tests. Also, the developed multi-fuction sensor system was tested the correlation between the CPT test and the portable tester with indoor test. The test result showed 0.85 R2 value in soil, 0.83 in weathered soil, and 0.98 in mixed soil. As a result of the field test, the multi-function sensor shows the excellent field applicability of the proposed sensor system. After further research, it is expected that the portable multi-function sensor will be useful for general slope inspection.
