An initial study has been conducted with Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral resources and National Institute of Environment Research to evaluate the distribution of radon levels and their risk levels of groundwater in Korea. Probability distribution of 616 samples was log-normal one with 1,867pCi/L as arithmetic value, 920pCi/L as median and 40,010pCi/L as maximum during iou. years(1999-2002). In addition, 10% of total samples are in excess of 4,000pCi/L, 20% in excess of 2,700pCi/L, and 30% in excess of 1,700pCi/L, and 15 samples exceeds 10,000pCi/L. Total samples are grouped into 10 areas and 5 rocks unit, and difference of concentrations among areas and rocks are statistically significant(respectively, p<0.0001). The highest area is Daejeon located in ogcheon metamorphic rocks and granitic rocks, and most of all sites with high concentration sites are located in granitic rocks. The lowest area is Jeju located in volcanic rocks. We have estimated excess cancer risks of radon based on these data. To estimate risks, first of all, use patterns of groundwater are categorized with 6 groups: for drinking, household, farming, washing cars, raising stock, and others. We considered risk only for drinking water and household water because radon is rapidly dispersed before it of other use reach human respiratory organs. We select 565 samples for risk analysis, and applied unit risk which is 6.6210-7 per pCi/L to be recommended by NAS committee. Unit risk was derived from considering radon ingestion and radon inhalation from water use. When estimating risk, we analyzed PDF of concentration and represented risk as 50 and 95 percentile values to consider uncertainty with Monte-Carlo simulation. It results in 10-4 level of their excess cancer risk and in 10-2 level in some areas with high concentration of radon. It must be monitor periodically and take adequate actions in these risky sites. We recommend that it needs to take more survey and finally set guideline for radon regulation in groundwater.
A leaching kinetics was conducted for the purpose of recovery of praseodymium in sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) from REE slag concentrated by the smelting reduction process in an arc furnace as a reactant. The concentration of $H_2SO_4$ was fixed at an excess ratio under the condition of slurry density of 1.500 g slag/L, 0.3 mol $H_2SO_4$, and the effect of temperatures was investigated under the condition of 30 to $80^{\circ}C$. As a result, praseodymium oxide ($Pr_6O_{11}$) existing in the slag was completely converted into praseodymium sulfate ($Pr_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}8H_2O$) after the leaching of 5 h. On the basis of the shrinking core model with a shape of sphere, the first leaching reaction was determined by chemical reaction mechanism. Generally, the solubility of pure REEs decreases with the increase of leaching temperatures in sulfuric acid, but REE slag was oppositely increased with increasing temperatures. It occurs because the ash layer included in the slag is affected as a resistance against the leaching. By using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy of the first chemical reaction was determined to be $9.195kJmol^{-1}$. In the second stage, the leaching rate is determined by the ash layer diffusion mechanism. The apparent activation energy of the second ash layer diffusion was determined to be $19.106kJmol^{-1}$. These relative low activation energy values were obtained by the existence of unreacted ash layer in the REE slag.
Hectorite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process from $Mg(OH)_{2}$, water glass (${\sim}30\;wt%\;SiO_{2}$) and Li-compound at $90{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. The product shows excellent dispersion and swelling properties. The mixture of the starting materials was heated in a glass vessel for the first reaction with continuous stirring and the pH of the solution was adjusted to $6{\sim}8$, resulting in the formation of a precursor of hectorite. The excess salt components were washed out from the resulting slurry and then was matured in the glass vessel for the 2nd reaction. Li compound was added during the reaction. After a 10 h retention, the gel of hectorite was formed. The XRD pattern of the synthesized one was coincided with that of natural hectorite and SEM study revealed uniform grains 50 m in diameter. The d001 basal spacing of the product moved from 12 to $17.4\;{\AA}$ after glycolation treatment. The measured value of CEC and the swelling capacity was 90 cmol/kg and $60{\sim}70\;mL/2\;g$, respectively.
As a fundamental study for the separation of vanadium and tungsten from the leaching solution obtained from the soda roasting and water leaching process of spent SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst was carried out. The precipitation behaviors of vanadium and tungsten using the artificial solution (V: $1g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, W: $10g{\cdot}L^{-1}$) was investigated depending on temperature, NaOH concentration and the amount of $CaCl_2$ (aq.) added. V (aq.) was selectively precipitated at lower temperature than 293 K while tungsten also was precipitated at higher temperature. Precipitation rate of V and W was decreased by the increasing concentration of NaOH. On the other hand, excess Ca addition induced the increase of precipitation rate for V and W due to the formation of $Ca(OH)_2$ following the pH decline. The response surface methodology was employed to optimize the selective precipitation. Vanadium of 99.5% and tungsten of 0.0% was precipitated at $0.5mol{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of aqueous NaOH and 1 equivalent ratio of $CaCl_2$ at 293 K.
Soil chemical properties were investigated to elucidate vertical movement of mineral nutrients in a fairway slope of 27 year-old golf course. Soil samples were taken at every 10cm depth to 4Ocm on 4 sites 20m apart each along two parallel lines 60m apart on the slope(15˚) in August. Accord-ing to the similarity of vertical distribution pattern they could be classified into 6 distinctive groups(magnesium, nitrate, phosphorus, ammonium, manganese and copper) and the slope tended to affect the vertical movement of minerals. The contents of Ca and Mg increased with depth while NO$_3$-N and Zn decreased and correlated positively. Soil pH showed significant positive correlation with depth, Ca and Mg. Phosphorus content was highest in 10~20cm depth and decreased resulting in relatively high content in 30~40cm depth of the bottom site of slope. Iron distribution pattern was similar to phosphorus. Potassium and $NH_4$showed various(irregular) patterns. Mn was highest in the deep layer at the lower sites of slope but it was reverse at the upper sites and negatively correlated with Fe. Cu content incresed with depth and heighest in 20~30cm depth. Electroconductivity showed significant positive correlation with $NO_3$-N. Magnesium, cal-cium and copper seem to be prone to defficiency due to fast leaching, and nitrate and phosphorus prone to excess problem. Preventive measures on acidification of surface soil should be taken.
The readily fermentable carbon sources in swine were acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid at the average concentrations of 7.2 g/L, 2.2 g/L and 2.7 g/L, respectively. The swine waste also contained excess nitrogen and other mineral sources. In shake flask experiments, the optimal range of cell growth for Azotobacter vinelandii UWD were 1.0∼3.5 g/L of acetic acid, 0.7∼2.0 g/L of propionic acid and 0.5∼2.0 g/L of butyric acid. A mixture of these three acids simulating two times diluted swine waste supported the best cell growth but the amount of carbon sources was limited. In shake flask and fermentor experiments, an addition of 30 g/L of glucose increased the final cell dry weight 8 times while the final poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) concentration increased 86 times compared with using acid mixture only. A. vinelandii UWD preferred organic acids in the sequence of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and valeric acid.
It was convinced that with a relatively small capital investment and with a low operating cost, appreciable amounts of cement copper could be produced from low-grade minerals by the application of a bacterial leaching method. For the recovery of cement copper from the impure pregnant solution, direct precipitation of copper with tin plates by a bacterial leaching method was feasible. The results obtained were as follows: 1)In order to remove the cement copper from the reducing metal, aeration and agitation method were more effective and economic than shaking method. 2)The rate of copper recovery from the pregnant solution was accerelated according to increasing quantities of reducing metal. However, the excess of reducing metal reduced the grade of cement copper. 3)Among the comparative experiments of copper recovery at each reaction temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$, the recovery rate of copper at $30^{\circ}C$from the pregnant solution was highest. 4)Direct cementation method on iron-containing metal was an excellent method for the recovery of cement copper in bacterial leaching.
A Zoysia japonica and Miscanthus sinensis grasslands of north-west side on Mt. Kwanak were investigated The most important species in this area were Zoysia japonica and Miscanthus sinensis These two species contributed greatly to the standing crops of live material, which were in excess of 598. 4g /$m^2$ and 698. 7g /$m^2$ during the growing season, respectively. This value would he ucreased if the production of the moss and algal mats which cover the soil surface during the growing season was included. The productive structures of the Zoysia japonica and Mliscanthus si nen sis grasslands were short and long height types of the grasslands, respectively. Key words: Standing crop, Production structure.
Carbaryl was degradaded to monomethylamine(MA) by bacterium. which isolated from lake sediment. Its carbaryl degradation was maximized when grown on mineral salt medium conditioning 20 $\mu$M of carbaryl as a sole carbon source at 26${\circ}$C and initial pH 7.0-9.0 Its degradation ability was minimized at initial pH 3.0 and 5.0 The percent conversions { (moles of MA in excess of control / mole of carbaryl added) $\times$ 100} for 10. 20. 40 and 80 $\mu$M of carbaryl were 18.6. 16.1. 18.1 and 11.6 respectively. It suggests that increasing amount of carbaryl added above 80 $\mu$M. the percent conversion should be decreased. The MA production by the bacterium was lineary related to the cultural time. After 7days culture. its percent conversion was 46.2. and this result suggests that a half amount of carbaryl would be hydrolyzed to MA by the bacterium within 8 days.
This study aimed to evaluate the sulfate removal capacity of the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) technique through the chemical precipitation of sulfate with calcium ions. The optimal EICP recipe was obtained to retain the excess calcium cations in the solution for the generation of a sufficient amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) mineral. The effect of gypsum precipitation on the EICP-treated sand specimen was investigated by measuring the shear wave velocity and by visual inspection via scanning electron microscopy. The EICP solution using soybean crude urease, as an alternative to laboratory-grade purified urease, exhibited a lower sulfate removal efficiency at a similar CaCO3 production rate compared with the optimal EICP recipe because of soybean impurities.
