It has been developed by the rice breeding team of Yeongdeog Substation, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. This variety was derived from a cross between "Milyang 64" as a resistance source of brown planthopper (Bph) and "Milyang 165" as grain quality source. The donor parent, "Milyang64" has been backcrossed three times with recurrent parent, "Milyang165" and selected by the pedigree breeding method. The pedigree of "Donghaejinmi", designated as "Yeongdeog 41" in 2003, was YR21259-B-B-68-1. It has a short culm length with 69 cm and medium-late growth time. This variety is resistant to stripe virus and moderately resistant to leaf blast disease with durable resistance. It also has tolerance to unfavorable environment such as cold, dried wind and storm. Milled rice kernel of "Donghaejinmi" is translucent, clear in chalkness and good at eating quality in panel test. The merit of this variety is high head rice ratio, which is essential element to produce an article of superior quality rice brand. The yield potential of "Donhaejinmi" in milled rice is about 6.05 MT/ha at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test. This cultivar would be adaptable to Yeongnam inland plains and eastern costal area of Yeongnam province.

  • The relationships between rice grain filling and air temperature of maturing period in paddy field were analyzed to evaluate the effects of climatic change on rice productivity in Korea. Data of air temperature of 31, 41 and 51 days after heading(DAH) for 11 years from 2002 to 2016 were collected and analyzed to determine the effects on rice yield and yield component related traits of Chucheogbyeo, popular cultivar in Gyeonggi province in Korea. As the results, ripening ratio was closely correlated with the mean of daily maximum temperature (DMAT $r=0.71^*$), the mean of daily temperature difference (DTD, $r=0.67^*$) of 41 DAH and DTD ($0.65^*$) of 51 DAH. Weight of 1,000 paddy rice grains was closely correlated with accumulated sunshine hours (ASH) of 31 ($r=0.84^{**}$), 41 ($r=0.75^{**}$), 51 ($r=0.72^*$) DAH. Brown rice grain weight recovery ratio was closely correlated with DTD ($r=0.76^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.84^{**}$) of 31 DAH, DMAT ($r=0.75^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.77^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.81^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$) of 41 and 51 DAH. Paddy rice yield was closely correlated with MDT ($r=-0.63^*$) of 31 DAH, mean of daily minimum temperature (DMIT, $r=-0.83^{**}$, $r=-0.70^*$), DTD ($r=0.71^*$, $r=0.62^*$) of 31 and 41 DAH. Brown rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-0.86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$) and DTD ($r=0.80^{**}$, $r=0.72^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.69^*$) of 51 DAH. Milled rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.71^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.68^*$) of 51 DAH.

  • Weed control is one of the important and difficult practices in environment-sound agriculture. This study was conducted to establish environment-sound weed control in paddy fields using rice bran pellet. Application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1${\sim}$3 Mg $ha^{-1}$ reduced weed occurrence by 46${\sim}$69% without using any chemical herbicide. However, rice bran application at a rate of greater than 2 Mg $ha^{-1}$ increased protein content in milled rice and decreased palatability value. Therefore, fertilization rate before transplanting needs to be reduced from $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ = 55-45-40 kg $ha^{-1}$ to 28-23-20 kg $ha^{-1}$, in order to decrease protein content and increase palatability value without decreasing rice yield. Pyroligneous acid and brown rice vinegar had a relatively weak activity to inhibit weed emergence compared with rice bran. When butachlor herbicide was applied at a rate of 0.75 kg $ha^{-1}$, 50% of recommended rate, co-application of rice bran pellet at a rate of 1 Mg $ha^{-1}$ enhanced weed control value from 63% to 75%.

  • To develop health functional foods using high amylose rice flours, the properties of flours prepared from domestic high amylose rice varieties, Goamy2 and Goamy, and imported rice from Thailand were investigated. After soaking the rice grains and drying, the dry-milled rice flours were passed through a 120-mesh sieve. The protein and total starch contents of the Goamy2 rice flour were lowest, but its crude lipid and ash contents were highest among the flours. In addition, apparent amylose content, water binding capacity, and total dietary fiber were highest in the Goamy2 flour (36.2, 255.0, and 9.2%, respectively). The Thai rice flour had the highest swelling power, whereas the Goamy2 flour had the lowest swelling power and solubility. By Rapid visco-analysis, the Thai flour showed the highest peak and total setback viscosities and lowest breakdown viscosity. The pasting pattern of the Goamy2 flour was different from that of the other flour, where low viscosity was maintained during heating and cooling. Goamy and Thai rice flours showed an A type crystallinity, but Goamy2 flour showed a B type crystallinity similar to high amylose maize starch. The Goamy2 flour presented a dull and yellowish color, and the lowest lightness (L) value and the highest yellowness (+b) value.
