  • We examine interoperability for integrated training simulation of a mechanized infantry battalion that uses a war game model of Korean army, Combat 21, and virtual simulators of K1 tanks. We discuss issues and problems for integrated simulation of the virtual and constructive models, including differences between the model scopes, model resolutions, engagement algorithms, and data consistency and training audiences of the war game model and virtual simulators. From these, we identify interoperability requirements. We propose ways of resolving the problems using a model converter.

  • Swarm has recently become a critical component of offensive and defensive systems. Multi-agent reinforcement learning(MARL) empowers swarm systems to handle a wide range of scenarios. However, the main challenge lies in MARL's scalability issue - as the number of agents increases, the performance of the learning decreases. In this study, transfer learning is applied to advanced MARL algorithm to resolve the scalability issue. Validation results show that the training efficiency has significantly improved, reducing computational time by 31 %.

  • Objective : This study examined changes in the depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among Air Force conscripts during their Basic Military Training. Methods : Study participants were 500 Air Force conscripts. The study reviewed participants' self-reports on depression, symptoms of anxiety, and suicidal ideation at weeks 2, 4, and 6 of their training. Results : At weeks 2 and 4 of training, participants' mean BDI, BAI, and SCL-90-R depression and anxiety subscale scores were within the mild ranges. However, at week 6, those mean scores were in the normal ranges. The mean scores for the BDI, the BAI, and the depression and anxiety subscales of the SCL-90-R at weeks 2 and 4 were significantly elevated over the corresponding scores for week 6 (each F=8.78, df=2, p<0.01 ; F=22.16, df=2, p<0.01 ; F=11.08, df=2, p<0.01 ; F=3.42, df=2, p<0.05). Suicidal ideation, revealed by the mean BSIS score, fell within the normal range (F=9.94, df=2, p<0.01) throughout the study period. Conclusions : These results suggest that conscripts' initial levels of psychological distress in the form of depression and anxiety are slightly elevated, but most adapt to this distress during basic training. Therefore, more attention must be paid to the early stages of conscripts' basic training in order to address these concerns.

  • Today's world is generation of Transformation. The Term "Transformation" is widely used in many nations and international organizations such as U.S. and NATO to describe the course of change undertaken by militaries to respond to the new and emerging security environment. Transformation involves all elements of the defense enterprise including Operational Environment, Operational Concepts, Doctrine, Structure and Technologies, within a supportive Cultures context. An Operational Environment is defined as "a composite of conditions, circumstances, and influences that affect the employment of military forces and bear on the decisions of the unit commander." The context for developing future military concept and capability lies essentially within the anticipated boundaries of the operational environment in a collective sense. The joint operational environment is essential to the nation's defense. It describes volatile, complex, and dangerous environment in which the military personnel. organizations, and material will operate. Implications coming forth from joint Operational Environment are but a starting point - many others exist. More and better Implications will come forth as people think about massages of Operational Environment, experiment its characteristics, learn to deal with its threats and scenarios, apply their experience and judgement, and then consider what is required of Korean military doctrine, organizations, training and education, material development, and leadership for operations in the joint Operational Environment.

  • This paper presents the educational methodology shipboard training methods of Maritime Colleges in U.S.A. and the fields of engagement in business of the graduates from them. There are two Maritime Academies, i.e. U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and U.S. Coast Guard Academy, which are supported by federal government and six Maritime Colleges operated by each State. Maritime Administration (MARAD) in the Department of Transportation (DOT) supports the training of merchant marine officers and crew members with a focus on safety in U.S. waterborne commerce. The shipboard training methods are not unique, but have various process. One is continuous sea term training onboard during sophomore (100 days) and junior year (200 days) in case of USMMA, the other is summer sea term training onboard every three months during freshman, sophomore and junior years in case of SUNY Maritime College. They offer also one month ship simulator training ashore. The employment status for the 1999 year graduates from USMMA shows 43 percent in the field of maritime afloat, 34 percent of maritime ashore, 22 percent of active duty military and 1 percent of others.

  • In this thesis, we propose an integrated simulation method of virtual tank simulators and an entity-based constructive simulation model for small unit tactical training. To do this, we first identify requirements for virtual-constructive integrated simulation in a synthetic environment. We then propose a virtual and constructive interoperation method where individual combat entities of virtual-constructive models are interacting with each others. We develop a method of aggregating individual combat entities into a larger combat unit and disaggregating an unit into entities from time to time. We also present a way of sharing synthetic environment information between the models. Finally, we suggest that for more effective interoperability, virtual and constructive models should be developed by using common combat object models. The proposed interoperation method can be extended to further live-virtual-constructive models.
