Among Solar activities' events, the geomagnetic storms are believed to cause the largest atmospheric effects. The geomagnetic storm is a complex process of solar wind/magnetospheric origin. It is well known to affect severely on the ionosphere. However, this effect of this complex process will maybe act at various altitudes in the atmosphere, even including the lower layer and the neutral middle atmosphere, particularly the stratosphere. Nowadays, the GPS-derived ZTD (zenith tropospheric delay) can be transformed into the precipitable water vapor (PWV) through a function relation, and further has been widely used in meteorology, especially in improving the precision of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. However, such geomagnetic effects on the atmosphere are ignored in GPS meteorology applications. In this paper, we will investigate the geomagnetic storms' effects on the middle atmosphere and troposphere (0-100km) by GPS observations and other data. It has found that geomagnetic storms' effect on the atmosphere also appears in the troposphere, but the mechanism to interpret correlations in the troposphere need be further studied.
This study analyzes the correlation between Western Pacific (WP) teleconnection pattern index (WPI) in April during 1954-2008 and rainfall amounts in the same month. Based on the results, it is identified that there have been strong positive correlations between central China, Korea and the southwestern part of Japan in the East Asian region. Through differences between 10 positive WP years and 10 negative WP years selected from the April WPI excluding ENSO years, it is found that rainfall amounts increase in April of positive WP years due to the following characteristics. Increases in rainfall amounts are evident in the East Asian middle latitudinal region where the positive correlation between the two variables is the highest and this is because anomalous southwesterlies are strengthened in the East Asian middle latitudinal region due to the spatial pattern of a south-low-north-high anomalous pressure system centered on this region that is made by anomalous anticyclones centered on the southeastern side of the region and other anomalous anticyclones centered on the northeastern side of the region. In addition, anomalous westerlies (jet) are strengthen in the upper troposphere of the East Asian middle latitudinal region and as a result, anomalous upward flows are strengthened in this region and thus anomalous warm air temperatures are formed in the entire level of the troposphere in the region. In addition to atmospheric environments, anomalous warm sea surface temperatures are formed in the seas in the East Asian middle latitudinal region to help the rainfall amount increases in the East Asian middle latitudinal region.
In this present study, we quantified the $SO_2$ effect on $O_3$ retrieval from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurement. The difference between OMI-Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and OMI-Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (DOAS) total $O_3$ is calculated in high $SO_2$ volcanic plume on several volcanic eruptions (Anatahan, La Cumbre, Sierra Negra, and Piton) from 2005 through 2008. There is a certain correlation ($R{\geq}0.5$) between the difference and $OMI-SO_2$ in volcanic plumes and the significant difference close to 100 DU. The high $SO_2$ condition found to affect TOMS $O_3$ retrieval significantly due to a strong $SO_2$ absorption at the TOMS $O_3$ retrieval wavelengths. Besides, we calculated the difference against various $SO_2$ levels. There is the considerable difference (average = 32.9 DU; standard deviation = 13.5 DU) in the high $OMI-SO_2$ condition ($OMI-SO_2{\geq}7.0DU$). We also found that the rate of change in the difference per 1.0 DU change in middle troposphere (TRM) and upper troposphere and stratosphere (STL) $SO_2$ columns are 3.9 DU and 4.9 DU, respectively.
In the case study of this paper, sensitivity experiments are carried out using the mesoscale non-hydrostatic Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to investigate the impact of tropical cyclone (TC) Soudelor (2003) on the East Asian subtropical upper-level jet (EASJ) before TC Soudelor transformed into an extratropical cyclone. The physical mechanism for changes in the EASJ intensity and position caused by TC Soudelor is explored. Results indicate that TC Soudelor would warm the air in the middle and upper troposphere over the Japan Sea and the adjacent areas through stimulating northward propagating teleconnection pattern as well as releasing large amounts of latent heat, which led to increase (decrease) the meridional air temperature gradient to the south (north) below the EASJ axis. As a result, the geopotential height abnormally increased in the upper troposphere, resulting in an anomalous anticyclonic circulation belt along the EASJ axis. Correspondingly, the westerly winds to the north (south) of the EASJ axis intensified (weakened) and the EASJ axis shifted northward by one degree. The case study also suggests that before the extratropical cyclone transition of TC Soudelor, the TC activities had exerted significant impacts on the EASJ through thermodynamic processes.
Global temperature trends of middle and upper tropospheres have been investigated using the data of satellite-observed Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) channels 2-3(Ch2, Ch3) during the period of 1980-97 and three GCM (NCEP, ECMWF, GEOS) reanalyses during 1981-93. The global, hemispheric and tropical anomalies, computed from the data during the common period, have been intercompared in the following regions; ocean, land, and both ocean and land. The correlation with MSU in midtropospheric temperatures is the best (r=0.81${\sim}$0.95) in ECMWF, particularly over the tropics. The correlations in upper troposphere are lower (r=0.06${\sim}$0.34) due to poor quality of MSU Ch3 data consistent with previous result. The midtropospheric trends during 1981-93, obtained from MSU and three GCMs, show the global warming of 0.01${\sim}$0.18K decade$^{-1}$. The warmest years have been 1987 and 1991 in El Ni${\tilde{n}$o while the coolest 1993 and 1994 in La Ni${\tilde{n}$a. The warming (0.12${\sim}$0.13K decade$^{-1}$) in MSU over global ocean is similar to that over global land. The largest discrepancy in upper troposphere between MSU and GCMs has been found in the transition period (1984. 12-1985. 1) from NOAA 9 to 10, because of a sizable error in the MSU Ch3. The midtropospheric trends near the Korean peninsula during 1981-93 are almost negligible(-0.02K decade$^{-1}$) in MSU, but indicate significant warming (0.25-0.43K decade$^{-1}$) in GCMs. The trends are crosschecked and discussed with other two independent MSU data of Spencer and Christy (1992a, 1992b).
Analyses of observational data and numerical simulations were performed to understand the mechanism of MCSs (Mesoscale Convective Systems) occurred on 13-14 July 2004 over Jindo area of the Korean Peninsula. Observations indicated that synoptic environment was favorable for the occurrence of heavy rainfall. This heavy rainfall appeared to have been enhanced by convergence around the Changma front and synoptic scale lifting. From the analyses of storm environment using Haenam upper-air observation data, it was confirmed that strong convective instability was present around the Jindo area. Instability indices such as K-index, SSI-index showed favorable condition for strong convection. In addition, warm advection in the lower troposphere and cold advection in the middle troposphere were detected from wind profiler data. The size of storm, that produced heavy rainfall over Jindo area, was smaller than $50{\times}50km^2$ according to radar observation. The storm developed more than 10 km in height, but high reflectivity (rain rate 30 mm/hr) was limited under 6 km. It can be judged that convection cells, which form cloud clusters, occurred on the inflow area of the Changma front. In numerical simulation, high CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) was found in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula. However, heavy rainfall was restricted to the Jindo area with high CIN (Convective INhibition) and high CAPE. From the observations of vertical drop size distribution from MRR (Micro Rain Radar) and the analyses of numerically simulated hydrometeors such as graupel etc., it can be inferred that melted graupels enhanced collision and coalescence process of heavy precipitation systems.
In this present study, we identified the $SO_2$ effect on $O_3$ retrieval from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurement over Chinese Industrial region from 2005 through 2007. The Planetary boundary layer (PBL) $SO_2$ data measured by OMI sensor is used in this present study. OMI-Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) total $O_3$ is compared with OMI-Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (DOAS) total $O_3$ in various $SO_2$ condition in PBL. The difference between OMI-TOMS and OMI-DOAS total $O_3$ (T-D) shows dependency on $SO_2$ (R (Correlation coefficient) = 0.36). Since aerosol has been reported to cause uncertainty of both OMI-TOMS and OMI-DOAS total $O_3$ retrieval, the aerosol effect on relationship between PBL $SO_2$ and T-D is investigated with changing Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD). There is negligible aerosol effect on the relationship showing similar slope ($1.83{\leq}slope{\leq}2.36$) between PBL $SO_2$ and T-D in various AOD conditions. We also found that the rate of change in T-D per 1.0 DU change in PBL, middle troposphere (TRM), and upper troposphere and stratosphere (STL) are 1.6 DU, 3.9 DU and 4.9 DU, respectively. It shows that the altitude where $SO_2$ exist can affect the value of T-D, which could be due to reduced absolute radiance sensitivity in the boundary layer at 317.5 nm which is used to retrieve OMI-TOMS ozone in boundary layer.

In this study, we present the analysis of vertical ozone sounding data observed over Pohang, Korea, and investigate to understand the governing mechanisms for seasonal ozone maximum in June. The vertical ozone profiles in June show that the ozone enhancement is clearly shown in the middle and upper troposphere. We have found that the June maximum is associated with the transport of ozone rich air from the stratosphere and polluted continental air mass. This is different from the previous studies shown that the regionally polluted continental air mass, influenced by the intense anthropogenic activities m northeast Asia during transport, is responsible for the ozone maximum in spring.

A two-dimensional photochemical transport model (2D PTM) is simulated to describe the transport and chemical reaction of ozone related to aerosols in the troposphere and stratosphere. The vertical profiles and total amounts of ozone, which are advected by both residual Eulerian circulation and the adiabatic circulation under certain circumstance, have been compared with the observation data such as ozonesondes, Brewer spectrometer, the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), and the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrophotometer (TOMS). As a result, we find that the observed distribution of ozone Is adequately reproduced in the model at middle and high latitude in the Northern Hemisphere as well as at Phang ($36^{\circ}\;02'N,\;129^{\circ}\;23'E$) in South Korea. In particular, the 2D PTM is well simulated in the ozone decrease due to the Pinatubo volcanic eruption in 1991. However, ozone mixing ratio are more underestimated than those of UARS and ozonesondes, because are very sensitive to the latitude of transport across the tropopause associated with both Rummukainen errors and off-line model. Relative mean bias errors and relative root mean square errors of ozone calculations using the 2D PTM are shown within${\pm}10%$, respectively.
This study investigates synoptic characteristics of cold surges over South Korea during winter season (December-February). A total of 63 cold events are selected by quantile regression analysis using daily mean temperature observations from 11 KMA stations for 38 years (1979/80-2016/17). Large-scale pressure pattern during the cold surges is well characterized by high over Siberia and low over Aleutian regions, which elucidates cold advection over the Korean peninsula. However, the large-scale pattern cannot successfully explain the observed sudden decrease of temperature during the cold surges. Composite analyses reveal that a synoptic-scale cyclone developing over the northern Japan is a key feature that significantly contribute to the enhancement of cold advection by increasing pressure gradient over the Korean peninsula. Enhanced sensible and latent heat fluxes are observed over the southern ocean of Korea and Japan during the cold surges due to temperature and humidity differences between the near surface and the lower atmosphere over the ocean. The evaporated water vapor transported toward the center of the surface cyclone and condenses in the lower-to-middle troposphere. The released energy likely promotes the development of the surface cyclone by inducing positive PV near the surface of the heating region.
