Water content is one of the significant engineering properties of soil for predicting the behavior of soil matrix. Conventional drying oven can be widely used to obtain the values by drying the soil specimens for 16 to 24 hours at $105^{\circ}C$. Although a number of experimental data has been accumulated for the conventional method of drying soil for water contents, shortcomings of the method are still hard to overcome such as long drying time for in situ use and the difficulty of taking prompt actions against emergency cases. Recently, ASTM and JGS have established microwave oven drying techniques for obtaining water contents to cope with those problems. And the reliability evaluation study has been also performed on the microwave oven drying for water contents. Feasibility study of the microwave oven drying was performed to confirm the process of the technique with Jumunjin sand, kaolinite, bentonite, weathered granite soil, and organic soil. Investigation was also conducted on the factors affecting and enhancing the reliability of the technique.
Conventional hot-air oven-drying method takes at least four hours to determine the moisture content of wood sample and this method is not always acceptable to wood industry. In this study samples of six different specifications from Paulownia coreana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus acutissima were dried in domestic microwave oven to their oven dry weights to investigate the possibility of rapid moisture content determination technique using microwave-oven drying method. Continuous heating time, cooling time and intermittent heating time were determined by each species and sample specifications. Temperatures of surface and center of samples were also measured during drying. Oven-drying times were reduced to 1/7~1/10 of conventional hot-air oven-drying method. Therefore microwave heating and drying techniques appear attractive for wood industry as a rapid moisture content determination method.
The food wastes from a refectory and an eating house were heated in domestic microwave oven(700W) equipped with a fan and the drying rates and destruction of microorganisms were investigated. The drying rate was decreased with the size of food waste and the food wastes in polypropylene basket were dried faster than that on glass dish. The rate was increased with lower initial moisture content. Death rate of microorganisms was also decreased with the size of food waste. Ninety eight percent of reduction in viable cell numbers for the 400g of food waste could be achieved in 240sec of microwave irradiation. The growth of microorganisms in food wastes after microwave irradiated was observed at $32^{\circ}C$ and 95% relative humidity after 7days and the cell numbers in microwave irradiated food wastes were found to be 1/2 ~ 1/20 of the numbers in untreated wastes in accordance with the mass and the length of exposed time to microwave. To minimize the moisture and microorganisms in food wastes, the use of microwave oven are recommended.
Drying process is very important for commercialization of velvet antlers. So far, artificial drying has mostly depended on experience of farmers resulting in low efficiency of drying, deterioration during drying, and contamination by dust and bacteria. Various drying techniques for high-quality production have currently been commercialized in some developed countries, and one of them is a drying technique using microwave. In this study, application of the technique using an electronic (microwave) oven for drying of velvet antler was investigated. The results of this study are as follows. 1. It was found that the drying period was significantly affected by cornification of velvet antlers. Accordingly, it can be assumed that the velvet antlers should partly be sliced to save drying period and required drying energy. 2. It was also found that the drying speed was changeable according to tempering period and even with same drying period. The tempering period should be controlled according to processing rate. 3. The results indicated that a repeated drying of 2-min drying and 3-min tempering is the most effective when a microwave oven was used. 4. The results also showed that the drying technique using microwave of electronic oven can be effectively used for drying of velvet antlers. 5. Only drying and tempering periods were examined in this study, however, ingredient change of deer antler after drying is necessary to be investigated in the future.
Organic soils are widely distributed at Youngdong areas in Kangwon prefecture and Jeonbuk area. Such organic soils usually consist of undecomposed fiber materials. It is difficult to exactly measure the water content of such organic soils because some organic materials may decompose at $110^{\circ}C$ in drying oven. In this study, both drying oven and microwave oven methods are used to measure the water content of organic soils. Three different levels of oven temperature, $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, and the standard temperature of $110^{\circ}C$, were used to measure the water content of organic soils in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day. The water content by microwave oven was measured for two different sample masses (30, 60 g) with five different measuring times (3, 6, 9, 12, 15 min.). As the temperature increased, the water content of organic soils increased due to the decomposition of organic materials in soils. The water content of some soils increased up to 2 times as the temperature was increased from $60^{\circ}C$ to $110^{\circ}C$. However, the water content was not changed after the 1st day, regardless of drying oven temperature and soil types. The water content by microwave oven became constant after 12 min. for the 30 g sample and 15 min. for the 60 g sample used. The measured water content by microwave oven was similar to that measured by drying oven at $60^{\circ}C$.

As interest in lunar exploration increases, studies on lunar surface environment simulation including a lunar soil simulant are being conducted. One of the problems when creating a vacuum environment with lunar soil is that it takes long time to reach high vacuum due to outgas from the soil. Most of the outgas is water, and the time to reach high vacuum can be significantly reduced by a pretreatment process that removes moisture adhering to the surface of the lunar soil before putting soil into a vacuum chamber. The existing soil drying methods were examined to determine how these methods were effective to remove moisture from the lunar simulant soil. Drying experiments of lunar soil samples were carried out using a dry oven, a microwave oven, direct heating method and a vacuum oven, and the results of the drying experiment were presented. Drying soil at 110℃ using a dry oven and drying soil by a microwave oven were not enough to remove moisture, and vacuum oven drying method and direct heating drying method at more than 200℃ were effective in water removal.
In order to determine the porosity of rock, the 'standard test method for porosity and density of rock' proposed by the Korean Society for Rock Mechanics is commonly used. However, the standard test method, which uses a drying oven, takes 8 to 24 hours to complete the test in taking samples out of the oven every four hours and measuring the weight of the specimen. To complement these disadvantages, we devised a method for measuring rock porosity by using a microwave oven. The devised method reduced the cause of errors and the inconvenience occurred in the process of weighing samples by constructing a weight monitoring system, which monitors the drying process. A suitable heating/pause time was set up to maintain the temperature of sample below $105{\pm}3^{\circ}C$ in drying process, and an alarm system was implemented in order to stop drying process when the weight change of the rock sample is within 0.1% of the initial weight. The porosity was determined from the dry weight of the sample, which was obtained by the curve fitting of weight monitoring data. Then, the porosities obtained by using the microwave oven were compared with those obtained by the standard test method. Test results using sandstone samples showed that the porosities obtained by a microwave oven was similar to those obtained by the standard method and the porosity difference between two methods was as large as 0.4%. In addition, repeated porosity measurement using the same specimen showed that the standard deviation of the porosity, which reflects the precision of the measurement was as good as 0.23%. Therefore, a microwave oven porosity measurement system can give the porosity of rock samples with high reliability.
Three hardwood (ash, alder and black locust) and three softwood (Japanese red pine, radiata pine and Western hemlock) specimens were dried in microwave(MlW) oven and their drying rates were obtained. Their specific permeabilities were also measured by using a modified liquid permeability measuring device. The correlation between the M/W drying rates and permeabilities of six species were statistically analyzed. It was revealed that within a species there is a logarithmic relationship between the M/W drying rates and average moisture contents and that among species there is a linear relationship between the M/W maximum drying rates and the average specific permeabilities. A exception was Western hemlock, which was of low permeability and of high drying rate. A Me-time equation, which showed a good agreement with the actual data, was derived. Thus using this equation the moisture contents of wood and the drying end points of M/W drying could be predicted. Infrared images of the thermal distribution in wood were illustrated.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the microwave drying characteristics of mixtures of chemical wastewater sludge (70~90%) and anthracite coal (10~30%) with respect to physical and economic factors such as mass, volume reduction, moisture content, drying rate and heating value when the wastes were dried at different weight mixing ratio and for different microwave irradiation time. The drying process were carried out in a microwave oven, the combined drying process with a 2,450 MHz frequency and 1 kW of power. Maximum dry rates per unit area on the microwave drying of mixtures with chemical wastewater sludge and anthracite coal were $35.5kg\;H_2O/m^2{\cdot}hr$ for Cs90-Ac10; $40.1kg\;H_2O/m^2{\cdot}hr$ for Cs80-Ac20 and $35.0kg\;H_2O/m^2{\cdot}hr$ for Cs70-Ac30. The result clearly indicated that moisture can be effectively and inexpensively removed from the wastes through use of the microwave drying process.

In this research, the microwave oven drying method was investigated as a potential accurate testing approach for determining the water content of fresh concrete. To do so, water content estimation formulas employed in three prominent oven drying test methods were selected, and the calculation principles for each equation, along with potential error factors arising during the actual testing process, were considered. Moreover, a concrete test was conducted to validate the possible error factors. Consequently, it was confirmed that estimation errors in the water content of fresh concrete can occur due to sample deviations arising during the wet screening process for creating mortar specimens or deviations in the coarse aggregate sampling quantity during the sample collection process.
