  • This article develops a nonclassical model to analyze bending response of squared perforated microbeams considering the coupled effect of microstructure and surface stress under different loading and boundary conditions, those are not be studied before. The corresponding material and geometrical characteristics of regularly squared perforated beams relative to fully filled beam are obtained analytically. The modified couple stress and the modified Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity models are adopted to incorporate the microstructure as well as the surface energy effects. The differential equations of equilibrium including the Poisson's effect are derived based on minimum potential energy. Exact closed form solution is obtained for bending behavior of the proposed model considering the classical and nonclassical boundary conditions for both uniformly distributed and concentrated loads. The proposed model is verified with results available in the literature. Influences of the microstructure length scale parameter, surface energy, beam thickness, boundary and loading conditions on the bending behavior of perforated microbeams are investigated. It is observed that microstructure and surface parameters are vital in investigation of the bending behavior of perforated microbeams. The obtained results are supportive for the design, analysis and manufacturing of perforated nanobeams that commonly used in nanoactuators, nanoswitches, MEMS and NEMS systems.

  • For semi-solid forging, it is necessarily required to prepare a workpiece with globular microstructure. Among several processes to obtain golbular microstructure, SIMA process is very simple and advantageous with respect to equipment. This paper presents the influence of effective strain on the globularization with aluminium 2024 alloy in cold working stage by SIMA process. Upsetting and forward extrusion are tested for cold working and induction heating is also carried out for reheating to obtain golbular microstructure. Microstructure is observed with an optical microscope. And finite element simulations to obtain effective strain in cold working stage are performed by using commercial finite element code, DEFORM.

  • Thermal barrier coating(TBC) applied to fighter and turbine engines is a technology that improves the durability of core parts by lowering the surface temperature of base material. The thermal stress caused by mis-match of the coefficient of thermal expansion between the top coating and the TGO interface is the main cause of TBC breakage. Since the thermal stress is dependent on the microstructure of the TBC, designing microstructure of TBC can improve the durability as well as lower the thermal stress. In this study, the effect of coating thickness, volume of porosity and vertical cracking on the thermal stress was analyzed through finite element analysis. Through the analysis results, a design range of a microstructure that can improve the durability of thermal barrier coating by lowering thermal stress is proposed.

  • Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid-state joining process which can homogenize the heterogeneous microstructure by intensely plastic deformation arising from the rotation of the welding tool. The present study applied the FSW to an A356 aluminum (AI) alloy with the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure in the T6 temper condition, and examined an effect of microstructure on mechanical properties in the weld. The base material consisted of Al matrix with a high density of strengthening precipitates, large eutectic silicon and a lot of porosities. The FSW led to fragment of the eutectic silicon, extinction of the porosities and dissolution of the strengthening precipitates in the Al alloy. The dissolution of strengthening precipitates reduced the hardness of the weld around the weld center and the transverse ultimate tensile strength of the weld. Longitudinal tensile specimen containing only the stir zone showed the roughly same strength as the base material and a much larger elongation. Moreover, Charpy impact tests indicated that the stir zone had remarkably the higher absorbed energy than the base material. The higher mechanical properties of the stir zone were attributed to a homogenization of the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure by FSW.

  • In this paper, the microstructure, hardness, tensile deformation and fracture behavior of high strength alloy steel X2M is presented anddiscussed. The influence of both composition and processing on microstructure of the as-provided material and resultant influence of microstructure, as a function of orientation, on hardness, tensile properties and final fracture behavior is highlighted. The macroscopic mode and intrinsic microscopic features that result from fracture of the steel specimens machined from the two orientations, longitudinal and transverse is discussed. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing quasi-static deformation and final fracture behavior of this high strength steel are outlined in light of the effects oftest specimen orientation, intrinsic microstructural effects and nature of loading.

  • This review will discuss the effort to understand the interfacial reactions at the anode and cathode sides of all-solid-state batteries. Antiperovskite solid electrolytes have received increasing attention due to their low melting points and anion tunability which allow controlling microstructure and crystallographic structures of this material system. Antiperovskite solid electrolytes pave the way for the understanding relationship between critical current density and mechanical properties of solid electrolytes. Microstructure engineering of cathode materials has been introduced to mitigate the volume change of cathode materials in solid-state batteries. The hollow microstructure coupled with a robust outer oxide layer effectively mitigates both volume change and stress level of cathode materials induced by lithium insertion and extraction, thus improving the structural stability of the cathode and outer oxide layer, which results in stable cycling performance of all-solid-state batteries.

  • In this work, comparative studies on microstructure and mechanical properties between $Mo_2N$ and Mo-Si-N coatings were conducted. Ternary Mo-Si-N coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel substrates by a hybrid method, where AIP technique was combined with a magnetron sputtering technique. Instrumental analyses of XRD, HRTEM, and XPS revealed that the Mo-Si-N coatings must be a composite consisting of fine $Mo_2N$ crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$. The hardness value of Mo-Si-N coatings significantly increased from 22 GPa of $Mo_2N$ coatings to about 37 GPa with Si content of 10 at.% due to the refinement of $Mo_2N$ crystallites and the composite microstructure characteristics. The average friction coefficient of the Mo-Si-N coatings gradually decreased from 0.65 to 0.4 with increasing Si content up to 15 at.%. The effects of Si content on microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo-N coatings were systematically investigated.

  • Dual-beam experiments (Focused ion beam - Orientation mapping microstructure, FIB-OIM) is a widely used experimental tool because this experiments tool available alternates between automated serial sectioning and EBSD with the help of dual beams. We investigated the reconstruction procedure for analysis tool which three-dimensional internal microstructure using Ni superalloy(IN100) and ZrO2. As a results, we observed annealing twin boundary each layer in Ni superalloy(IN100) and fairly isotropic internal microstructure in ZrO2 using marching cubes algorithm. According to these results, this procedure is reconstructed well and we gained ability to arrange the EBSD map and internal microstructure.

  • To consider the practicality and economic feasibility of developing reactive powder concrete (RPC), the strength and microstructure properties of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials (silica fume, blast furnace slag, fly ash) were investigated in this study. Through the investigation, it was found that the compressive strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was increased significantly compared to that of the original RPC containing silica fume only. A considerable improvement in the flexural strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was found, and then the utilization of a structural member subjected to bending was expected. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) revealed that the microstructure of RPC was denser using the ternary pozzolanic materials than the original RPC.

  • Performance of carbon-carbon composites is known to be influenced by the fibre matrix interactions. The present investigation was undertaken to ascertain the development of microstructure in such composites when carbon fibres possessing different surface energies (T-300, HM-35, P120 and Dialed 1370) and pitch matrices with different characteristics (Coal tar pitch $SP110^{\circ}C$ and mesophase pitch $SP285^{\circ}C$) are used as precursor materials. These composites were subjected to two different heat treatment temperatures of $1000^{\circ}C$ and $2600^{\circ}C$. Quite interesting changes in the crystalline parameters as well as the matrix microstructure are observed and attempt has been made to correlate these observations with the fibre matrix interactions.
