  • Malaria remains a global health threat. Approximately 97% of the population is at risk in sub-Saharan countries, particularly Nigeria. This study compared the performance of 2 diagnostic methods in assessing malaria endemicity in the rural communities of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. A total of 1,140 study participants were screened for malaria parasite using Rapid Diagnostic Test kits (RDT) in the field, while thick and thin films for microscopy were examined in the laboratory. Our result showed that malaria prevalence was 56.8 by RDT and 38.6% by microscopic test. Age group under 10 years had the highest prevalence of 28.9% (RDT) and 23.6% (microscopy), respectively. The highest prevalence of 19.5% by RDT was recorded in Onicha Local Government Area, while the highest prevalence of 13.4% with microscopy was recorded in Ezza North Local Government Area. The sensitivity and specificity of microscopic examination were both 100%, while those of RDT were 95.5% and 75.9%, respectively.

  • Since concrete is an inhomogeneous material consisting of larger aggregates and sand embedded in a cement paste matrix, it relatively shows a complex failure mechanism. In order to assure the reliability of concrete structure. microscopic fracture behavior and internal damage progress of concrete under the loading should be fully understood. In this study, an acoustic emission(AE) technique has been used to clarify microscopic failure mechanism and their corresponding AE signal characteristics of concrete under three-point bending test. In addition 2-dimensional AE source location has been performed to monitor the progress of an internal damage and the successive crack growth behavior during the loading. The relationship between AE signal characteristics and microscopic fracture mechanism is discussed.

  • We have made an optical device to study the wave optics phenomena, such as image and diffraction pattern, constructive and destructive interference, by direct operation of laser beam and optical lenses. It consists of laser beam, goniometer, objective lens, intermediate lens, projection lens, CCD system, and computing system. As a result of the performance test, we were able to magnify samples up to 44 times with the resolution of about $5{\mu}m$. It is expected to help EM users understanding more easily principles of transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • Microscopy is considered as the gold standard for malaria diagnosis although its wide application is limited by the requirement of highly experienced microscopists. PCR and serological tests provide efficient diagnostic performance and have been applied for malaria diagnosis and research. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic performance of nested PCR and a recently developed an ELISA-based new rapid diagnosis test (RDT), NovaLisa test kit, for diagnosis of malaria infection, using microscopic method as the gold standard. The performance of nested-PCR as a malaria diagnostic tool is excellent with respect to its high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and ability to discriminate Plasmodium species. The sensitivity and specificity of nested-PCR compared with the microscopic method for detection of Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and P. falciparum/P. vivax mixed infection were 71.4 vs 100%, 100 vs 98.7%, and 100 vs 95.0%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the ELISA-based NovaLisa test kit compared with the microscopic method for detection of Plasmodium genus were 89.0 vs 91.6%, respectively. NovaLisa test kit provided comparable diagnostic performance. Its relatively low cost, simplicity, and rapidity enables large scale field application.

  • The test method on the Type II high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks made of the metal wire hoop winding is a complex and high risk. Also closeup on the tank being test is difficult. In this study, we studied a mechanical test method for a high-pressure hydrogen tanks. This method must be simple, risk-free and possible to observe the change in microscopic behavior of a metal wire on a liner. As the results, it was possible to observe the microscopic behavior on the metal wire by the mechanical test method. Also, a simple and risk-free test was possible compared to the conventional test method for high pressure hydrogen tanks.

  • Nonlinear stress analysis of nuclear containment building is carried out using microscopic concrete material model. The present study mainly focuses on the evaluation of the ultimate pressure capacity of idealized containment building in nuclear power plant. For this purpose, an eight-node degenerated shell element it adopted and an imaginary opening in the apex of containment building is allowed in FE model. From numerical analysis, the adopted concrete material model performs well and has a good agreement with the result obtained by using ABAQUS. Finally, we propose the present study as a benchmark test for nonlinear analysis of containment building.

  • Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is systemic small vessel vasculitis that is very rare in childhood. MPA is characterized by pauci-immune necrotizing small vessel vasculitis without clinical or pathological evidence of necrotizing granulomatous inflammation. Approximately 90% of patients have glomerulonephritis that is accompanied by a variety of other organ involvement. A 10-year-old girl visited our clinic with clinical manifestations suggestive Henoch-Sch$\ddot{o}$nlein purpura nephritis such as purpuric skin rash, abdominal pain, arthralgia on both knees, massive proteinuria and microscopic hematuria. So initially we suspected Henoch-Sch$\ddot{o}$nlein purpura nephritis. However, later her perinuclear-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies(p-ANCA) test was positive, and her renal biopsy was consistent with microscopic polyangiitis. We began steroid therapy, combined with cyclophosphamide, ACE inhibitor. Currently she is a 12-year old, and until now she has been regularly examined in the outpatient. We report a case of microscopic polyangiitis initially suspected with Henoch-Sch$\ddot{o}$nlein purpura nephritis.

  • This study aims to increase students' understanding of equilibrium, one of the many concepts in chemistry that students find difficult. Dynamic equilibrium must be dealt with at the sub-microscopic level where the real and the representation overlap in order to microscopically understand the constant motion and interaction of particles and to understand the macroscopic characteristics expressed through this. However, as a result of analyzing 9 Chemistry I textbooks, the expression approach for equilibrium had some limitations. As a strategy to understand equilibrium at a sub-microscopic approach, the classes using scratch were consisted of a total of 4 hours, and it was implemented with 56 students. The classes were composed of 6 steps, and it was designed to understand equilibrium step by step. As a result of comparing the pretest and post- test, the number of students who got both the microscopic and macroscopic explanations of chemical equilibrium correct increased largely. Through this, it was possible to get a glimpse of the applicability of classes using scratch as the approach strategy of the sub-microscopic representation.

  • A 65-year-old woman was admitted due to poor oral intake and a dry cough over the previous 3 months. The physical examination was remarkable for bibasilar crackles, and plain chest radiography showed reticulation in both lower lung fields. A pulmonary function test demonstrated a restrictive pattern with a reduced diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide. High resolution computed tomography showed reticulation and honey-combing in both peripheral lung zones, which was consistent with usual interstitial pneumonia pattern. Her skin showed livedo reticularis. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein level were elevated, and hematuria was noted on urinary analysis. A serologic test for auto-antibodies showed seropositivity for Myeloperoxidase-Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA). A kidney biopsy was performed and showed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. She was diagnosed as having pulmonary fibrosis with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and treated with high dose steroids. Here we report a case of pulmonary fibrosis coexistent with microscopic polyangiitis.
