An autonomous demand-responsive bus with mobility-on-demand service is an innovative transport compensating for the disadvantages of an autonomous bus and a demand-responsive bus with mobility-on-demand service. However, less attention has been paid to the quantitative impact assessment of the autonomous demand-responsive bus due to the technological complexity of the autonomous demand-responsive bus. This study simulates autonomous demand-responsive bus trips by reinforcement learning on a microscopic traffic simulation to quantify the impact of the autonomous demand-responsive bus. The Chungju campus of the Korea National University of Transportation is selected as a testbed. Simulation results show that the introduction of the autonomous demand-responsive bus can reduce the wait time of passengers, average control delay, and increase the traffic speed compared to the results with fixed route bus service. This study contributes to the quantitative evaluation of the autonomous demand-responsive bus.
This study aims to design and implement a traffic model that can simulate the traffic behavior on the microscopic level by using the GIS. In the design of the model, the vehicle in the simulation environment recognizes the GIS road centerline data as road network data reflecting number of lanes, speed limit and so on. In addition, the behavior model was designed by dividing functions into the environmental perception model, time headway distribution model, car following model, and lane changing model. The implemented model was applied to Jahamun-road of Jongno-gu district to verify the accuracy of the model. As a result, the simulation results on the Jahamun-road had no great error compared with the actual observation data. In the aspect of usability of model, it is judged that this model will be able to effectively contribute to analysis of amount of carbon emission by traffic, evaluation of traffic flow, plans for location of urban infrastructure and so on.
Although an interest in higher design speeds continues to increase to promote more efficient travel on expressways, the current Korean design guidelines do not provide criteria for design values. An arising issue associated with higher design speeds is how to effectively ensure traffic safety under such high speed traffic conditions. In particular the safety issue would become more significant in determining the interchange spacing. This study proposes a methodology for determining freeway interchange spacing under higher speed traffic conditions. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to evaluate the effects of various interchange spacings on traffic conditions in terms of safety. In this study, the acceleration noise was used as an index to represent the stability of traffic conditions, which is a potential indicator to quantify the level of safety. It was found based on simulation evaluations that 5-km interchange spacing would be a feasible alternative under higher speed traffic conditions (around 160 km/h).
PURPOSES : This study aims to investigate the direct and indirect influence areas from incidents on urban interrupted roadways and to develop traffic management strategies for each influence area. METHODS : Based on a literature review, various traffic management strategies for certain incidents were collected. In addition, the relationship between the measure of effectiveness and the characteristics of incidents was explored using an extensive simulation study. RESULTS : From the simulation studies, traffic delays increased as the number of lane closures increased, and the impact of lane closures was reduced to the direction upstream from the incident site. However, the magnitude of the delay change depended on the degree of saturation. Using these characteristics, the direct and indirect influence areas resulting from incidents were defined, and traffic management strategies were established for each direct and indirect influence area and for each level of incident. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study will contribute to the improvement of national traffic safety by preventing secondary incidents and by effective adaptation to incident events.
Micro-simulation models have been recognized as an efficient assessment tool in developing traffic signal control technologies. In this paper a prototype of a microscopic simulation model which can be applied to evaluate the performance of traffic-adaptive signal control strategies was developed. In the simulation process, space-based arrays were appled to estimate parameters of car following and lane changing models. Two levels of link types, a micro-type and macro-type links, were also embodied in the simulation process. The proposed model was tested on a test network consists of 9 intersections. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated in link by link comparisons with the results of NETSIM. The results show that the proposed model could appropriately simulate traffic flows of the test network. The model also produces traffic adaptive signal timings, cycle lengths and green times for turning movements, based on the detector data. It implies that the optimization process of the model produces reasonable signal timings for the test network on the cycle basis.

The car-dependent traffic system based on highly advanced industrialization and economic growth causes various urban problems including traffic jams, energy consumption, air pollution, noise, car accidents and other issues. Particularly in urban areas, air pollution from motor vehicles is worse than pollution from past industrialization. In this study, therefore, the authors grasped car exhaust reduction effects by using microsimulation and those traffic policies that could make cars flow smoothly, reducing the air pollution in urban areas through analysis on profitability. As a result, the weekday-based car using system has been found most effective as it does not need investment cost. However, this system may be socially unacceptable, as it requires the government to change driver behavior. Therefore, the government needs to first reach a consensus with the citizens regarding this system. This system will also be effective with other alternatives. As a follow-up study, the authors will research citizens' perceived impacts of car exhaust on air pollution through a study on preference and grasp the possibility of applying these study results to real traffic policies.

Microscopic simulation models, which focus on individual vehicles, are used extensively in the transportation operations in order to capture vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to traffic controls. There are many important factors involved when a micro simulation model is applied as an evaluation tool for the traffic system. They typically include test bed, software, simulation time period, measure of effectiveness, parameter for a software, OD matrix, and random seed number. To evaluate the effects of those factors, sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the effects of those factors based on CORSIM and TRANSIMS results. Three freeway corridors, two in Houston (I-10 and US 290) and one in Sin Antonio (I-37), were chosen as test beds. Three time periods (AM, PM, off-peak) and three OD matrix estimates were used for the analysis. It was found that the micro-simulation results were highly sensitive to the model Parameter sets and the OD information. The degree of sensitivity was a function of the test bed and time period.
The purpose of this paper is to develop a microscopic traffic simulation model which is able to both analyze and the evaluate signlaized urban network and to verify its usefulness in comparison with the other model which has alfeady been released. This simulation model adopts the General Motor's 5th model for car-following and introduces an unique lanechanging rule using acceptable gap. It analyzes single and dual-ring signal phases and generates detector information . So it could be applied to dynamic route guidance systems as wel as real time signal control systems. The results derived from Netsim and the observed data from the real network have been used to test the validit of the proposed model. The result of the test has shown that there are no significant differences between the NETSIM model and the proposed model in estimating travel speed and stopped delay. In optimum offset estimatin , it has shown the same results with NETSIM. the measure of effectiveness , however, derived from this model is slightly better than that of the real network situation. This may be due to the fact that the proposed model does not take into account side frictions from interferences and obstacles.
