3D Micromorphology Producing within Poly(lactic acid) Skeleton Using Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids: From Particulate, Fibrous or Porous Scaffolds to Beads

  • We describe herein a three-dimensionally diverse micropatterning of poly(lactic acid), as a biopolymer, using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (bmim-based RTILs), [bmim]X (X = $SbF_6$, $PF_6$, $NTf_2$, Cl). Utilizing the hydrophobic bmim-based RTILs, [bmim]X (X = $SbF_6$, $PF_6$, $NTf_2$) and a phase separation technique, we were able to produce white and opaque membranes with a three-dimensional structure closely packed with particles ($10-50{\mu}m$ in diameter). The particlulate structure, made by the assistance of [bmim]$NTf_2$ and DCM, interestingly transformed to a fibrous structure by using a cosolvent, e.g., DCM/$CF_3CH_2OH$. When we used an increased amount of [bmim]$NTf_2$, the particles were effectively detached and macrosized ($100-500{\mu}m$ in diameter) and the oval-shaped beads were obtained in a powder form. By varying the counter-anion type of the imidazolium-based RTIL, for example from $NTf_2^-$ to $Cl^-$, the particulate 3D-morphology was once more transformed to a porous structure. These reserch results could be potentially useful, as a method to fabricate particulate scaffolds, fibrous or porous scaffolds, and beads as a biopolymer device in diverse fields including drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and biomedical engineering.

Cuticle micromorphology of leaves of Quercus L. (Fagaceae) and its taxonomic implications (참나무속(Quercus L.) 식물 잎의 큐티클 미세형태의 분류학적 의미)

  • Cuticle micromorphology of 22 species of Quercus and outgroup were examined by the SEM. Twenty-two species selected each two or three species in all section of the genus Quercus. The genus Trigonobalanus and Alnus are selected as outgroups. Ten characters of the inner surface and eight characters of the outer surface of the cuticle have been described. Some characters, such as the present of papillae, arrangement of subsidiary cell, shape of anticlinal cell wall are considered important character for infrageneric classification. A parsimony analysis of 18 characters resulted in 72 most parsimonious trees with its lengths of 66 steps. The topology obtained from the analysis showed two major lineages. Subgenus Cyclobalanopsis formed one clade by 75% and subgenus Quercus formed another clade by 57% bootstrap value. Based on the cuticle morphology, the two subgenus delimitation of Camus was supported. However, sect. Erythrobalanus and sect. Cerris formed one group, and sect. Lepidobalanus formed polytomy.

Micromorphology of Benthic Diatom Species Achnanthes alteragracillima Lange-Bert

  • Morphology of Achnanthes alteragracillima Lange-Bert. was studied with scanning electron microscopy in epilithic samples from the Kwang River (Kwangchun), Kyungsangbuk-Do, Korea. The species was characterized by the external raphe terminal fissure deflecting up to valve margin, the internal raphe proximal endings slightly deflecting to the opposite direction each other and biased hyaline area at the valve pole. It could be distinguished from A. minutissima K tz., closely related species, in having not straight external raphe terminal fissures, and from A. convergens H.Kob. in having a biased hyaline area at the valve pole and not a convergent striae arrangement at the pole of the raphe valve.

A Study on the Petal Micromorphological Characteristics of the Tribe Sorbarieae (Rosaceae) (쉬땅나무족(장미과) 화판표피의 미세형태학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • A comparative petal micromorphology of 15 taxa of tribe Sorbarieae was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to evaluate their taxonomic and systematic implication. The characteristics of both adaxial and abaxial side of petal epidermal cells such as shape, arrangement, anticlinal wall and cuticular sculpture were described in detail. The Sorbarieae petal epidermal cells were identified as papillate or conical papillate (PCS) and rectangular-rugose tabular (TRS). Three types of petal micromorphology were found within the tribe based on the cell patterns of adaxial and abaxial side. Type I. PCS-TRS, Type II. PCS-PCS, Type III. TRS-TRS (adaxial-abaxial side). The petal epidermal cell types, anticlinal cell wall, and cuticular sculpture represent not only taxonomical importance for identification between or within the genera but also systematic implication. Moreover, this study provides a relation between petal epidermal cell pattern and insect pollinator (entomophily; melittophily) as an additional case.

Effects of Road Constructions on Soil Drainage from Paddy Fields

  • Bad drainage problems from paddy fields adjacent to roads are caused by higher constructed roads which change topography of paddy fields to concave topography and artificial pan to prevent road erosion when road constructions are occurred. This study investigated effects of topography changes on soils by road constructions. Soil samples were investigated by physico-chemical analyses and micromorphology analyses from representative soil profile of Sachon series and soil samples. The characteristics of Sachon series that were adjacent to roads were fewer redoximorphic features (RMF) and increase in grey layers than the original Sachon series. The characteristics of Yecheon Series were shown from Jeollanamdo - Suncheon > Chungchungnamdo - Cheonan > Gangwondo - Wonju. Mosaic speckles were shown from micromorphological analyses because of repeat of shrink and expansion by wetting and drying. The location of graying in soil clods were found from coarse stone blocks to fine stone blocks and color changes of composed particles were also found.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the micromorphology of vessel wall sculpture such as shape of perforation plate, perforation rim, steepness of perforation plate, occurrence of vestured pit, warty layer and ray-vessel pitting on 13 species of Fagaceae in Korea. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. In the species examined, all sample species except Fagus crenata var. multinervis have simple perforation plate. But Fagus crenata var. multinervis has simple and scalariform perforation plate (it was called to combination perforation plate) in a tree stem. 2. The shapes of perforation rim could be classified into five types; Type A without tail, Type B with small tail on both sides, Type C with long tail on both sides, Type D with tail only one side and Type E with the very short interval between perforations. Among five types, Type Band C have higer frequency of distribution than the others. 3. The steepness of perforation plate measured was about 20 degree on pore zone and 43 degree on outside parts of pore zone. 4. Species with vestured pit were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Fagus crenata var. multinervis, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii, Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, and Q. glauca. But the extent of vesturing was very slight and vestured pits were observed mainly in ray-vessel pit of some vessel elements. 5. Species with warty layer on the inner surface wall of all vessel elements were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with warty layer of some vessel elements were Q. aliena, Q, dentata, Q. variabilis, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. 6. Species with palisade ray-vessel pit were Q. acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, Castanea crenata, Castanea bungeana, Q. aliena, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica, and species with scalariform ray-vessel pit was Fagus crenata var. multinervis and species with oval ray-vessel pit were Q, dentata, Castanopsis cuspidata var sieboldii.
