  • For many past years, research in the operation of stand-alone Microgrid, which provides electric power generated from renewable energy sources and energy storage system instead of diesel generators, has been a major issue in order to prepare the exhaustion of fossil fuel and to protect environment, in island grids. Samso Island, known as the world's first stand-alone Microgrid in Denmark, is connected to the mainland grid through AC system, which has different technical conditions with Korea's isolated power system. Korea's first stand-alone Microgrid has been built in Ga-sa island, Chun-la-nam-do, based on Energy Management System (EMS) operation, and other islands are under construction to follow the next step. These stand-alone Microgrid's has large capacity of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the proportion of the renewable energy sources are large, which makes it necessary to use a Microgrid-Energy Management System (MG-EMS) to operate the grid effectively and economically. However, since the main subject of MG-EMS is different from EMS, specific characteristics and functions must be different as well. In this paper, the necessary characteristics and functions are explained for a general MG-EMS compared to a large power system EMS.

  • Nowadays, in islands where electricity should be provided autonomously, stand-alone microgrid technologies using renewable energy such as sunlight generation and wind power generation come into wide use. The microgrid electricity generation using renewable energy is greatly affected by the natural environment of a site. In order to maintain stable electricity supply for fluctuating electricity generation due to natural environment, the energy management via EMS is positively necessary. In existing stand-alone microgrid EMS, system operation logic is not changeable flexibly because compiled or builded codes are released into the EMS of a site, respectively. In this paper, we designed a flexible operating script-based microgrid EMS Framework for various sites and applied it to some island sites. We could confirm its usability.

  • Energy Management System(EMS) of Microgrid(MG) collects and analyzes data from devices in the microgrid to provide information to operators, users and other systems. In the middle of the process, it is required to securely provide information through both wired and wireless communication networks. In this paper, we design and implement a module that provides encryption and decryption, key management, key distribution, and message authentication functions, thus enabling the development of a system which is safe from the exposure and modulation of data potentially occurrable during data transmission between RTU(Remote Terminal Unit) and EMS. Our method can increase the efficiency of connection and key management for RTU by connecting a virtual device(VD) to RTU.

  • The ESS is composed of Battery Package, PCS(Power Conditioning System) Package, BCU(BESS Control Unit). In Jeju smart grid test-bed, we have developed a business model by ESS power system, renewable energy, transportation, such as customers, and have demonstrated above things. We have analyzed the EMS(Energy Management System) model of KPX where manages supply and demand of domestic electrical power system. We modified and launched EMS for microgrid but the cost was expensive and the system was large size. For releasing this system from industry as a whole, it is imperative to develop PMS(Power Management System) for microgrid. However, the cost of EMS for microgrid is expensive, some systems because it is a large development of the all of the first fruits in urgent PMS(Power Management System) for microgrid to be used in industry in general. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the ESS model considering the power systems characteristics and extensibility in korea. and also we propose the PMS to manage the ESS systems.

  • The microgrid concept assumes a cluster of loads and microsources operating as a single controllable system that provides a new paradigm for defining the operation of distributed generation. This system can be operated as both grid-connected mode and islanded mode. In other words, the microgrid can be operated to meet their special need; such as economics in steady state and local reliability in islanded mode due to the grid fault. This paper presents the AGC (Automatic Generation Control) method for microgrid with EMS (Energy Management System).

  • Microgrid is a new electrical energy system that composed of various generators, renewable energy, batteries and loads located near the electrical customers. When Microgrid is interconnected with large power system, Microgrid don't need to control the frequency. But in case of the outage or faults of power system, Microgrid should control the frequency to prevent the shutdown of Microgrid. This paper presents the frequency control methods using the droop function, being used by synchronous generators and EMS(Energy Management System). Using droop function, two battery systems could share the load based on locally measured signals without any communications between batteries. Also, we suggest that EMS should control the controllable distributed generators as P/Q control modes except batteries to overcome the weakness of droop function. Finally we suggest the two batteries systems to prolong the battery's life time considering the economical view. The validation of proposed methods is tested using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations and field test sites at the same time.

  • Information security and preservation of customer's data privacy are key factors for further wide spread adoption of microgrid (MG) technology. However, strong coupling between the operation cost of multi-microgrid (MMG) system and privacy of customer data makes it more challenging. A nested energy management system (EMS) has been proposed in this paper. The surplus/shortage information from the inner level MGs is included in processing the optimal operation of outer level MGs. This type of optimization ensures a layered privacy-preservation to customer at each MG level. The proposed EMS architecture is a better trade-off architecture between the operation cost of the MMG system and customer privacy-preservation at each level of MG.

  • The construction of medium-and large-sized microgrid systems by unit area, which is being promoted worldwide, is being developed and expanded in the form of efficient operation of electric grids and independent operation in preparation for power emergencies. Therefore, for the development of the domestic electricity industry, it is urgent to analyze the current status and technology of relevant international standardization, and to make international standardization of domestic standard (draft) on the matters that need to be enacted and newly established. Campus microgrid implements smart grid element technologies such as Integrated Energy Management System(EMS), Distributed Power(DG), Energy Storage System(ESS), Demand Response(DR), and Electric Vehicle(EV) in a university campus. As a system that reduces energy use and improves energy use efficiency and energy independence, standardization is established to secure interoperability and reliability of such systems.

  • In this paper, an integrated simulation model for designing multi-agent system based DEMS (distributed energy management system) in stand-alone micro-grid system is proposed. In the design of the EMS(energy management system), the multi-agent based DEMS are more effective than conventional centralized EMS, but it is difficult to design the DEMS by general design tools for power system because of various states of a microgrid system during operation of stand-alone mode. Also, since performance test of the DEMS using a real system is inefficient, an integrated simulation model is required for designing an effective multi-agent system based DEMS. The proposed model consists of Matlab/SimPowerSystems based simulation model of the microgrid system and the Multi-agnet based DEMS designed by Matlab/StateFlow tool. In order to show the effect of the proposed model, the model outputs are analyzed for specified operation conditions.

These applications are installed on central Energy Management System (EMS) and provide solutions of DC network operation. To analysis DC distribution network, this paper proposes composition and sequence of applications. Algorithm of applications is presented in this paper. Demonstration tests are performed on DC distribution site in Gochang Power Testing Center of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). To verify the performance, developed DC applications installed on EMS. Scenarios for demonstration test of voltage control are presented. Finally, measured data, application output data and simulation data (by PSCAD/EMTDC) are compared and analyze accuracy of applications.
