  • In this paper, a simple method to measure the residual stress in microstructure is presented. In order to find the residual stress in micro-machined beam, the first natural frequency of the beam that has the residual stress inside is analyzed using Rayleigh's energy method. Micro gold electroplated structure is fabricated by surface micro-machining process including electroplating. The made structure is an approximate shape of clamped-clamped beam and its 1 st natural frequency is measured by resonance method. For the better estimation of the residual stress, an equivalent length of micro-fabricated beam to ideal beam is calculated by FEM. The residual stress was estimated from the equivalent length and the measured natural frequency. It was found that a tensile stress was residue in the micro beam structure.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to metal bar with chemically cured adhesive (Ortho-one, Bisco Co, USA) in various types and directions of force application. Three types of metal bracket with different bracket base configurations; Micro-Loc base(Tomy Co, Japan), Chessboard base(Daesung Co, Korea), Non-etched Foil-Mesh base(Dentaurum, Germany); were used in this study. Peel, shear, tensile bond strengths were measured by universal testing machine and compared each other. The peel force directions applied were $0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;75^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}$ And then, in consideration of the different surface area of the bracket bases, the bond strength Per unit area were calculated and compared. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The bond strengths according to the types and the directions of the forces were greatest at the shear forces in all three bracket base configuration groups(p<0.01). 2. As the peel force direction grew higher in degree, peel bond strength decreased. The Patterns of peel bond strength change according to force direction was similar in all three bracket base configurations. The minimum bond strength was 60 degree-peel bond strengths in all three bracket base configurations. 3. In Micro-Loc base group, minimum peel bond strength$(_{60}PBS)$ was in $29\%$ level of shear bond strength and $52\%$ level of tensile bond strength. In Chessboard base group, $_{60}PBS$ was in $34\%$ level of shear bond strength and $61\%$ level of tensile bond strength. In Non-etched Foil-Mesh base group, $_{60}PBS$ was in $34\%$ level of shear bond strength and $55\%$ level of tensile bond strength. 4. The bond strengths per unit area were lowest in Non-etched Foil-Mesh base group and highest in Chessboard base group(p<0.05). However, there were no differences in shear bond strength, tensile bond strength, $75^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ per unit area between Micro-Loc and Chessboard base groups.

  • This paper explain about the development of environmental friendly, low cost and stable supply material i.e., rice husk and shell were used as micro incorporating bio waste filler. Those were processed by ball mill and analyzed through micro observation by FE-SEM, EDS and particle size distribution. The obtained filler was mixed with epoxy resin for the manufacturing of CFRP composite and study tensile properties. In EDS analysis main contents of rice husk and rice husk ash are C, O and Si. When rice husk was burned C and Si ration were increased. Shell powder has C, O and Ca. It caused $CaCO_3$ from shell. Surface weighted mean of rice husk powder is $6.19{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $14.77{\mu}m$. And it has rod type particles which caused hair and husk structure parts. Surface weighted mean of rice husk ash powder is $1.55{\mu}m$ and volume weighted means is $8.20{\mu}m$. Surface weighted mean of shell powder is $2.53{\mu}m$ and volume weighted mean is $5.79{\mu}m$. The tensile decreased with increasing the content of micro filler in CFRP composites. In case of rice husk, the significant decrement of tensile strength was observed. and in case of shell powder, there is no effect of changes take place in tensile strength.

  • In this paper, anisotropic tensile properties of the AZ31B Mg-alloy sheet are obtained with the tensile test at elevated temperatures. Change of microscopic structures and the hardness is inspected after the solution heat treatment process in order to confirm the micro-structural stability of the used sheet metal. Results obtained from tensile tests show that it is very difficult to apply the conventional modeling scheme with the assumption of strain hardening to the forming analysis of the magnesium alloy sheet which shows the strain-softening behavior at the elevated temperature.

  • The microstructure and fractography of the friction welded joint of Al to Cu have been investigated in order to understand the formation of intermetallic compounds and their effects on the failure in tensile test of the joint. The variation of welding pressure did not affect significantly the tensile strength of joint. However, the tensile strength of joint decreaed as welding time increased. The thickness of reaction layers of welded joints was several micro-meters and mainly composed of intermetallic compounds of $CuAl_2$, $Cu_9Al_4$ and Al+$CuAl_2$. The thickness of $CuAl_2$, $Cu_9Al_4$ was increased with welding time. However, $CuAl_2$ was gradually changed to $Cu_9Al_4$ which caused the decrease of tensile strength . Even though the morphology of fractured surfaces depended upon the welding time, the failure occurred along $CuAl_2$ intermetallic compound itself or between $CuAl_2$ and $Cu_9Al_4$ in most cases.

  • Commercial micro pulps(Arbocel) were coated with three kinds of polymers using spray method. These coated micro pulps were used to papermaking additives to evaluate retention, drainage and physical properties of paper. The retention and drainage were improved with addition of polymer coated micro pulp. The bulk index of paper was also increased, but tensile and tear strength were decreased slightly, probably due to weakening of internal bonding. These results showed that the use of polymer coated micro pulp was an effective method to improve retention, drainage and bulk index of paper.

  • The transfer assembly (or transfer printing) technique is a promising method for fabricating multi-scale structures on various substrates including semiconductors and polymers, and has been applied to fabrication of flexible devices with superior performance to conventional organic flexible devices. The mechanical behaviors of the structures fabricated by the transfer assembly is a very important information for design and reliability evaluation purpose, but the measurement of the behaviors is difficult since their critical-dimensions are very tiny. In this study, Au films with nano-scale thickness were fabricated on a silicon substrate and their mechanical properties were measured using micro-tensile test. The Au films on the silicon substrate were then transferred to a PDMS substrate using the transfer assembly technique. Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with a thiol group was used to enhance the transfer of Au films, and the mechanical behaviors were characterized using wrinkle-based test. The test results from micro-tensile and wrinkle-based test are compared to each other, and their implication to the transfer assembly technique is discussed.

  • This study investigated variations of micro-structures and mechanical properties of Ti / STS321L joint with various bonding temperature and time using brazing method. According to increasing bonding temperature and time, it was observed that the thickness of their reaction layer increased due So increasing diffusion rate and time. From the EPMA results, Ti diffused to the STS321L substrate according to increasing bending time to 30min. Hardness of bonded interface increased with increasing bonding temperature and time due to increasing their oxides and intermetallic compounds. XRD data indicated that Ag, Ag-Ti intermetallic compounds, TiAg and Ti₃Ag and titanium oxide, TiO₂were formed in interface. In tensile test, it was found that the tensile strength had a maximum value at the bonding temperature of 900℃ and time of 5min, and tensile strength decreased over bonding time of 5min. The critical thickness of intermetallic compounds was observed to about 30㎛, because of brittleness from their excessive intermetallic compounds and titanium oxide, and weakness from void.

  • Shape memory alloy has been used to improve the tensile strength of composite by the occurrence of compressive residual stress in matrix using its shape memory effect. In order to fabricate shape memory alloy composite, TiNi alloy fiber and Al2024 sheets were used as reinforcing material and matrix, respectively. In this study, TiNi/Al2024 shape memory alloy composite was made by using hot press method. In order to investigate bonding condition between TiNi reinforcement and Al matrix, the micro-structure of interface was observed by using optical microscope and diffusion layer of interface was measured by using Electron Probe Micro Analyser. And the mechanical properties of composite with three parameters(volume fraction of fiber, cold rolling amount and test temperature) were obtained by tensile test. The most optimum bonding condition for fabrication the TiNi/Al2024 composite material was obtained as holding for 30min. under the pressure of 60MPa at 793K. The strength of composite material increased considerably with the volume fraction of fiber up to 7.0%. And the tensile strength of this composite increased with the reduction ratio and it also depends on the volume fraction of fiber.
