  • Integrated humidity sensor system with two stages operational amplifier has been designed and fabricated by $0.8{\mu}m$ analog mixed CMOS technology. The system (28 pin and $2mm{\times}4mm$) consisted of Wheatstone-bridge type humidity sensor, resistive type humidity sensor, temperature sensors and operational amplifier for signal amplification and process in one chip. The poly-nitride etch stop process has been tried to form the sensing area as well as trench in a standard CMOS process. This modified technique did not affect the CMOS devices in their essential characteristics and gave an allowance to fabricate the system on same chip by standard process. The operational amplifier showed the stable operation so that unity gain bandwidth was more than 5.46 MHz and slew rate was more than 10 V/uS, respectively. The drain current of n-channel humidity sensitive field effect transistor (HUSFET) increased from 0.54 mA to 0.68 mA as the relative humidity increased from 10 to 70 %RH.

  • Cellulose Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) has been known as a new smart material that is attractive for a bio-mimetic actuator due to its merits in terms of lightweight, dry condition, large displacement output, low actuation voltage and low power consumption. Cellulose EAPap is made by regenerating cellulose and aligning its micro-fibrils. This paper introduces several EAPap materials, which are based on natural cellulose and its hybrid nanocomposites mixed/blended with inorganic functional materials. By chemically bonding and mixing with carbon nanotubes and inorganic nanoparticles, the cellulose EAPap can be a hybrid nanocomposite that has versatile properties and can meet material requirements for many applications. Recent research trend of the cellulose EAPap is introduced in terms of material preparations as well as application devices including actuators, temperature and humidity sensors, biosensors, chemical sensors, and so on. This paper also explains wirelessly driving technology for the cellulose EAPap, which is attractive for bio-mimetic robotics, surveillance and micro-aerial vehicles.

  • Dryers becoming commercially available for experimental and industrial use are classified to general drying oven, hot-air dryer, vacuum dryer, freezing dryer, etc. and kinds of them are various from the function, size and volume, etc. But the moisture measurement is not applied although it is important factor for the quality control and the performance improvement of products, and then now is very passive because the weight is weighed arbitrarily after dry-end. Generally the method for measuring moisture is divided by a direct measurement method and a indirect measurement method, and the former such as the change of weight or volume on the front and rear of separation of moisture, etc. is mainly used. Relatively a indirect measurement is very limited to apply due to utilize measurement apparatuses using temperature conductivity and micro-wave etc. In this research, we easily designed the moisture measurement system using the open-source based Arduino, and monitored moisture fluctuations and weight profiles in the real-time without the effect of external environment. Concretely the temperature-humidity and load cell sensors were packaged into a drying oven and the various change values were measured, and their sensors capable to operate 60℃ and 80℃ were selected to suitable for the moisture sensitive materials and the food dry. And also the performance safety using the organic samples of banana, pear, sawdust could be secured because the changes of evaporation rate as the dry time and temperature, and the measurement values of load cell appeared stable response characteristics through repeated experiments. Hereafter we judge that the reliability can be improved increasingly through the expansion of temperature-humidity range and the comparative analysis with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program.

  • An irrigation monitoring system is an efficient approach to save water and to provide effective irrigation scheduling for rice cultivation in desert soils. This research aimed to design, fabricate, and evaluate the basic performance of an irrigation monitoring system based on information and communication technology (ICT) for rice cultivation under drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation in desert soils using a Raspberry Pi. A data acquisition system was installed and tested inside a rice cultivating net house at the United Arab Emirates University, Al-Foah, Al-Ain. The Raspberry Pi operating system was used to control the irrigation and to monitor the soil water content, ambient temperature, humidity, and light intensity inside the net house. Soil water content sensors were placed in the desert soil at depths of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cm. A sensor-based automatic irrigation logic circuit was used to control the actuators and to manage the crop irrigation operations depending on the soil water content requirements. A developed webserver was used to store the sensor data and update the actuator status by communicating via the Pi-embedded Wi-Fi network. The maximum and minimum average soil water contents, ambient temperatures, humidity levels, and light intensity values were monitored as 33.91 ± 2 to 26.95 ± 1%, 45 ± 3 to 24 ± 3℃, 58 ± 2 to 50 ± 4%, and 7160-90 lx, respectively, during the experimental period. The ICT-based monitoring system ensured precise irrigation scheduling and better performance to provide an adequate water supply and information about the ambient environment.

  • A micro-gas sensor with heater and sensing electrode on the same plane was fabricated on phosphosilicate glass(PSG, 800nm)/$Si_3N_4$ (150nm) dielectric membrane. PSG film was provided by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition(APCVD), and $Si_3N_4$ film by low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). Total area of the fabricated device was $3.78{\times}3.78mm^2$. The area of diaphragm was $1.5{\times}1.5mm^2$, and that of the sensing layer was $0.24{\times}0.24mm^2$. Finite-element simulation was employed to estimate temperature distribution for a square-shaped diaphragm. The power consumption of Pt heater was about 85mW at $350^{\circ}C$. Tin thin films were deposited on the silicon substrate by thermal evaporation at room temperature and $232^{\circ}C$, and tin oxide films($SnO_2$) were prepared by thermal oxidation of the metallic tin films at $650^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in oxygen ambient. The film analyses were carried out by SEM and XRD techniques. Effects of humidity and ambient temperature on the resistance of the sensing layer were found to be negligible. The fabricated micro-gas sensor exhibited high sensitivity to butane gas.

  • An IoT-based particulate matter (PM2.5) sensing device (PSD) is developed. The PSD consists of a PM2.5 sensor, signal processing circuit, and wi-fi enabled-microprocessor along with temperature and humidity sensors. The PSD estimates PM2.5 density by measuring light scattered by PM2.5. To gauge performance of the PSD, PM2.5 density of open air was measured with the PSD and compared with that of the collocated-government-certified measuring station. Measurements were taken at a sampling frequency of 100 Hz and moving-averaged to remove measurement noise. When compared to the result of the measuring station, average percentile error of PM2.5 density from the PSD is found to be 31%. A correlation coefficient is found to be 0.72 which indicates a strong correlation. Instantaneous variation, however, may far exceed average errors, leading to a conclusion that the PSD is more suitable for estimating average trend of PM2.5 density variations than estimating instantaneous PM2.5 density.

  • Various LIDs with natural water circulation function are applied to reduce urban environmental problems and environmental impact of development projects. However, excessive Infiltration and evaporation of LID facilities dry the LID internal soil, thus reducing plant and microbial activity and reducing environmental re duction ability. The purpose of this study was to develop a real-time measurement system with complex sensors to derive the management plan of LID facilities. The test of measurable sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) application was conducted in artificial wetlands shaped in acrylic boxes. The applied sensors were intended to be built at a low cost considering the distributed LID and were based on Arduino and Raspberry Pi, which are relatively inexpensive and commercialized. In addition, the goal was to develop complex sensor measurements to analyze the current state o f LID facilities and the effects of maintenance and abnormal weather conditions. Sensors are required to measure wind direction, wind speed, rainfall, carbon dioxide, Micro-dust, temperature and humidity, acidity, and location information in real time. Data collection devices, storage server programs, and operation programs for PC and mobile devices were developed to collect, transmit and check the results of measured data from applied sensors. The measurements obtained through each sensor are passed through the Wifi module to the management server and stored on the database server in real time. Analysis of the four-month measurement result values conducted in this study confirmed the stability and applicability of ICT technology application to LID facilities. Real-time measured values are found to be able to utilize big data to evaluate the functions of LID facilities and derive maintenance measures.

  • Ubiquitous computing is one of the key technology areas in the "Project on Development of Ubiquitous computing and network technology" promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a frontier business of the $21^{st}$ century in Korea, which is based on the new concept merging physical space and computer-based cyber space. With recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low-power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have been available. Using these smart sensor nodes, there are many activities to monitor real world, for example, habitat monitoring, earthquake monitoring and so on. In this paper, we introduce web-based real environment monitoring system incorporating wireless sensor nodes. It collects sensing data produced by some wireless sensor nodes and stores them into a database system to analyze. Our environment monitoring system is composed of a networked camera and environmental sensor nodes, which are called Mica2 and developed by University of California at Berkeley. We have modified and ported network protocols over TinyOS and developed a monitoring application program using the MTS310 and MTS420 sensors that are able to observe temperature, relative humidity, light and accelerator. The sensed data can be accessed user-friendly because our environment monitoring system supports web-based user interface. Moreover, in this system, we can setup threshold values so the system supports a function to inform some anomalous events to administrators. Especially, the system shows two useful pre-processed data as a kind of practical uses: a discomfort index and a septicity index. To make both index values, the system restores related data from the database system and calculates them according to each equation relatively. We can do enormous works using wireless sensor technologies, but just environment monitoring. In this paper, we show just one of the plentiful applications using sensor technologies.
