  • We synthesized silicon carbide (${\beta}-SiC$) nanowires with nano-scale diameter (30 - 400 nm) and micro-scale length ($50-200{\mu}m$) on a porous body using low-grade silica and carbon black powder by carbothermal reduction at $1300-1600^{\circ}C$. The SiC nanowires were formed by vapor-liquid-solid deposition with self-evaporated Fe catalysts in low-grade silica. We investigated the characteristics of the SiC nanowires, which were grown on a porous body with Ar flowing in a vacuum furnace. Their structural, optical, and electrical properties were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selective area electron diffraction (SAED). We obtained high-quality SiC single crystalline nanowire without stacking faults that may have uses in industrial applications.

  • Growth characteristics and microstructure of AIN thin films grown by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy on Si substrates have been investigated. Growing temperature and substrate orientation were chosen as major variables of the experiment. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy/diffraction (TEM/TED) techniques were employed to characterize the micorstructure of the films. On Si(100) substrates, AlN thin films were grown along the hexagonal c-axis preferred orientation at temperature range 850-90$0^{\circ}C$. However on Si(111), the AlN films were epitaxially grown with directional coherency in AlN(0001)/Si(111), AlN(1100)/Si(110), and AlN(1120)/Si(112) at 85$0^{\circ}C$ and the epitaxial coherencry seemed to be slightly distorted with increasing temperature. The microstructure of AlN thin films on Si(111) substrates showed that the films include a lot of crystal defects and there exist micro-gaps among the columns.

  • An ultrafine grained Mg-9Al-1Zn magnesium alloy with the mean grain size less than $1{\mu}m$ was produced by using high-ratio differential speed rolling. The processed alloy exhibited excellent superplasticity at relatively low temperatures. The micro-forming tests were carried out using a micro-forging apparatus with micro V-grooved shaped dies made of silicon and the micro-formability was evaluated by means of micro-formability index, $R_f$ ($=A_f/A_g$, $A_f$: formed and inflowed area into the V-groove, $A_g$: area of the V-groove). The $R_f$ value increased with temperature up to $280^{\circ}C$ and then decreased beyond $300^{\circ}C$. The decrease of the $R_f$ value at $300^{\circ}C$ was attributed to the accelerated grain coarsening. Increasing the micro-forging pressure increased the $R_f$ values. At a given die geometry, die filling ability decreased as the die position moved away from the die center to the end. FEM simulation predicted this behavior and a method of improving this problem was proposed.

  • In this work, the Co-doped ZnO rods were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The size of these rods can be changed from micro-size to nano-size by using different solutions during the preparation. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) showed that the as-prepared nano-sized Co-doped rods have single-crystal structure. The polarized Raman experiments were presented on an individual micro-sized Co-doped ZnO rod in the $X(YY)\vec{X}$, $X(ZY)\vec{X}$ and $X(ZZ)\vec{X}$ configurations, the results of polarized Raman indicated that these rods are crystallized and their growth direction is parallel to c-axis.

  • Fresnel lenses are developed for flat optics with the optical characteristics close to aspherical lens such as sharp focusing and dispersion instead of spherical or aspherical surface. Usually, these fresnel lenses and diffraction gratings are machined by high-energy beam such as electron beam machining, but recently with the development of ultra precision machine tool and machining technology, 3-dimension micro machining becomes preferable. This study on the micro machining of fresnel lens is carried out to develop the basic technology of ultra precision micro machining. The machined lens mold will be used for the manufacturing of fresnel lens with 120mm focal distance using synthetic resin material with 1.49 refractive index(PMMA), and the shape of lens is 48mm diameter, $300\mum$ pitch and about $5-700\mum$depth of groove in brass.

  • A corrosion resistance and hard nitrocarburized layer was distinctly formed on 310 austenitic stainless steel substrate by DC plasma nitrocarburizing. Basically, 310L austenitic stainless steel has high chromium and nickel content which is applicable for high temperature applications. In this experiment, plasma nitrocarburizing was performed in a D.C. pulsed plasma ion nitriding system at different temperatures in $H_2-N_2-CH_4$ gas mixtures. After the experiment structural phases, micro-hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated by the optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, micro-hardness testing and Potentiodynamic polarization tests. The hardness of the samples was measured by using a Vickers micro hardness tester with the load of 100 g. XRD indicated a single expanded austenite phase was formed at all treatment temperatures. Such a nitrogen and carbon supersaturated layer is precipitation free and possesses a high hardness and good corrosion resistance.

  • In this study, we investigated surface characteristics of hydroxyapatite coated surface on nano/micro pore structured Ti-35Ta-xNb alloys. This paper was focus on morphology and corrosion resistance of Anodic oxidation. To prepare the samples, Ti-35Ta-xNb (x= 0, 10 wt. %) alloys were manufactured by arc melting and heat-treated for 12 h at $1050^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere at $0^{\circ}C$ water quenching. Micro-pore structured surface was performed using anodization with a DC power supply at 280 V for 3 min, nanotube formed on Ti-35Ta-xNb alloys was performed using DC power supply at 30 V in 60 min at room temperature. Surface morphology and structure were examined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

  • The aim of this study is to determine microstructure, chemical composition and crystal structure of hydroxyapatite for mouth teeth using optical microscopy and electron microscopy as well as electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA). Enamel, a protective cover to the teeth, consisted of rods oriented in regular and had relatively higher crystallinity and Ca component. In contrast, dentin showed a sponge-like microstructure with circular holes which were passages of dentinal tubules, and had higher Mg component than the enamel region due to its higher organic content. Hydroxyapatite crystals appeared as large rods in enamel, but as small needles in dentin. Their electron diffraction patterns were different by their crystallinity as well as by the organic content of the matrix.

  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been applied to observe directly the {{{{ SQRT { 19} }}}}${\times}${{{{ SQRT { 19} }}}} and (1${\times}$1)HT reconstructions and the transition associated step bunching on the GaAs (111)B surfaces under As pressure. Close to the transition point, {{{{ SQRT { 19} }}}}${\times}${{{{ SQRT { 19} }}}}an d (1${\times}$1)HT reconstructions are observed in dark and bright domains by SEM and determined by micro-probe reflection high-energy electron diffraction (${\mu}$-RHEED). The reconstruction diagram shows hyster-esis. The stepped surface morphology during the reconstruction transition was unstable. Heavy step bunching with rough macrostep edges was observed.
