Experiment was performed to study the characteristics of pressure drop of multi-channel tubes for automotive condenser using HFC-134a. Single phase liquid and two phase flow pressure drop were measured in one rectangular plain and three micro-fin tubes with 10 channels. Data are presented for the following range of variables: mass flux(200 to $600kg/m^2s$), and inlet saturation pressure of the refrigerant(1.0 and 1.6MPa). For subcooled flow, pressure drops are 10% and 12% higher than that predicted by the Petukhov equation with hydraulic diameter respectively. Two-phase flow pressure drop are compared with the previously proposed correlations, and well predicted by modified correlation that was derived from Traviss correlation. and correlated within -30~+20%. Also experimental data are correlated within -56%~+18% by Webb's prediction method based on the equivalent mass velocity concept originally proposed by Akers et al.
Comprehensive measurements for velocity and temperature fields have been conducted. A Micro PIV 2-color LIF system have been setup to measure the buoyancy driven fields in a 1-mm heated channel with low Grashof-Prandtl numbers [$86]. Fluorescence microscopy is combined with an MPIV system to obtain enough intensity images and clear pictures from nano-scale fluorescence particles. The spatial resolution of the Micro PIV system is $75{\mu}m\;by\;67{\mu}m$ and error due to Brownian motion is estimated $1.05\%$. Temperature measurements have achieved the $4.7\;{\mu}m$ spatial resolution with relatively large data uncertainties the present experiment. The measurement uncertainties have been decreased down to less than ${\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ when measurement resolution is equivalent to $76\;{\mu}m$. Measured velocity and temperature fields will be compared with numerical results to examine the feasibility of development as a diagnostic technique.
The paper is to study on the simulation of the micro/macroscale thermo-electrochemical model of a single cell of anode-supported SOFC with direct internal reforming. The coupled heat and mass transport, electrochemical and reforming reactions, and fluid flow were simultaneously simulated based on mass, energy, charge conservation. The micro/macroscale model first calculates the detailed electrochemical and direct internal reforming processes in porous electrodes based on the comprehensive microscale model and then solve the macroscale processes such as heat and mass transport, and fluid flow in SOFCs with assumption of fully-developed flow in gas channel. The simulation results evaluate the overall performance by analyzing distributions of mole fraction, current density, temperature and microstructural design in co/counter flow configurations.
It is of great interest to enhance mixing performance in a microchannel in which the flow is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved in this laminar flow regime. In this regard, we present a new chaotic passive micromixer, named Barrier Embedded Micromixer (BEM), of which the mixing mechanism is based on chaotic flows. In BEM, chaotic flow is induced by periodic perturbation of the velocity field due to periodically inserted barriers along the channel wall while a helical type of flow is obtained by slanted grooves on the bottom surface of the channel in the pressure driven flow. To experimentally compare the mixing performance, a T-microchannel and a microchannel with only slanted grooves were also fabricated. All microchannels were made of PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) from SU-8 masters that were fabricated by conventional photolithography. Mixing performance was experimentally characterized with respect to an average mixing intensity by means of color change of phenolphthalein as pH indicator. It was found that mixing efficiency decreases as Re increases for all three micromixers. Experimental results obviously indicate that BEM has better mixing performance than the other two. Chaotic mixing mechanism, suggested in this study, can be easily applied to integrated microfluidic systems , such as Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-chip and so on.
Microscale heat transfer and microfluidics have become increasingly important to overcome some very complex engineering challenges. The use of very small passages to gain heat transfer enhancement is a well documented method for achieving high heat flux dissipation. As the passage size is decreased, the heat transfer performance increases but the pressure drop increases sharply when the passage size is reduced. In this study, the performance evaluation of micro plated heat exchangers under the counter flows with straight, V-shaped and Y-shaped channel are carried out.
The mixing effect is studied by comparing rotating and oscillating stirrers in the micro channel. The cases of Re=10 to 80 with various stirring speeds are considered to analysis the effect of Re and stirrer speed for the mixing. Under Re=20, the oscillating stirrer represents better mixing rate than the rotating stirrer up to the critical stirrer speed which has a maximum efficiency. Over Re=30, the results of oscillating and rotating stirrer show that the faster the stirrer speed, the higher the mixing effect within the concerned stirrer speed range and the oscillating stirrer keeps the higher mixing rate. It was found that the mixing effect is a function which has an optimum of the Reynolds number and the stirrer speed. The D2Q9 Lattice Boltzmann Method is used due to the merits of calculation for the unsteady flow with moving boundary.
In the microfluidics devices the most important thing is mixing efficiency of various fluids. In this study a newly designed mixer is proposed to enhance the mixing effect with the purpose to apply it to microchannel mixing in a short future. This design is composed of a channel with cross baffles periodically arranged on the both bottom and top surfaces of the channel. To obtain the flow patterns, the numerical computation was performed by using a commercial code, ANSYS CFX 10.0. To evaluate the mixing performance, we computed Lyapunov exponent and obtained Poincare sections.
In this paper, we present a technology of producing anew chaotic micromixer, named Micromixer with Arranged Blocks(MAB), and the experimental result of the mixing performance. Chaotic mixing was successfully achieved by introducing periodic perturbation in the field of the channel flow by means of slanted blocks. The MAB was made by an RP(Rapid Prototyping) technology. We performed flow visualization experiments for the quantification of the mixing performance with the MAB. Lyapunov exponent was measured to be 0.3557 and 0.1305 for the block height 0.8 and 0.2 times the channel width.
