In this study, we propose an advanced nanoindentaion test, Nano Pillar Compression Test (NPCT) to measure a stress-strain relation for micro scale polymer structures. Firstly, FEM analysis is performed to research behavior of micro polymer pillars in several specimen aspect ratios and different friction conditions between specimen and tip. Based on the FEM results, micro scale UV-curable polymer pillars are fabricated on a substrate by Nano Stereo Lithography (NSL). To measure their mechanical properties, uniaxial compression test is performed using nanoindentation apparatus with flat-ended diamond tip. In addition, the dependency of compression properties on loading condition and specimen size are discussed.

The fracture toughness and micro-fracture mechanisms of the porous glass and stainless fiber reinforced glass composite were evaluated by using the acoustice mission(AE) technique, fracture toughness $test(K_{IC})$ and the macroscopic observation of the specimen surface which was being under the loading. At initial portion of the loading, the AE signals with low energy, of which origins were considered as the micro-cracks formated at the crack tip, were emitted. With increasing the applied load, AE signals having higher energies were generated due to the coalesence of micro-cracks and fast fracture. Based on the such relationship between AE emission and loading condition, fracture toughness $K_{IAE}$ could be defined successfully be using the $K_I$ value corresponding to an abrupt change of the accumulated AE signal energies emitted during the fracture toughness test. In spite of its brittleness of glass material, nonlinear deformation behavior before maximum load was observed due to the formation of micro-cracks. Further, the stainless fiber may have attributed to the improvement of fracture toughness and the resistance to crack propagation comparing to noncomposited materials Finally, models of the micro-fracture process combined with the AE sources for the porous glass material and its composite were proposed paying attention to the micro-crack nucleation and its coalescence at the crack tip. Fiber fracture and its Pullout, deformation of fiber itself were also delinated from the model.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to identify the complex course of the mandibular canal using 3D reconstruction of microCT images and to provide the diagram for clinicians to help them understand at the interforaminal region in Korean. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-six hemimandibles obtained from cadavers were examined using microCT, and the images were reconstructed. At both the midpoint of mental foramen and the tip of anterior loop, the bucco-lingual position, the height from the mandibular inferior border, the horizontal distance between two points, and position relative to tooth site on the mandibular canal were measured. The angle that the mental canal diverges from the mandibular canal was measured in posterior-superior and lateral-superior direction. RESULTS. The buccal distance from the mandibular canal was significantly much shorter than lingual distance at both the mental foramen and the tip of anterior loop. The mandibular canal at the tip of anterior loop was significantly located closer to buccal side and higher than at the mental foramen. And the mental canal most commonly diverged from the mandibular canal below the first premolar by approximately $50^{\circ}$ posterior-superior and $41^{\circ}$ lateral-superior direction, which had with a mean length of 5.19 mm in front of the mental foramen, and exited to the mental foramen below the second premolar. CONCLUSION. These results suggest that it could form a hazardous tetrahedron space at the interforaminal region, thus, the clinician need to pay attention to the width of a premolar tooth from the mental foramen during dental implant placement.

A micro hole punching system was developed and micro holes of 100m in diameter were successfully made on brass sheets of loom in thickness. A micro punch made of tungsten carbide was designed to withstand the punch load, considering the buckling and the bending moment due to possible misalignment error. The punch was fabricated by the grinding process with diamond wheel. The die was designed considering the punch load and fabricated by micro electrodischarge machining process. In this system the stripper is designed to guide punch tip to minimize the possible misalignment. The punch was installed on a vertical stepper and the die was mounted on an X-Y translation unit. The precision motion controller controlled all motions of the micro hole punching system. In this study technical difficulties and solutions in the micro hole punching process were also discussed.

In order to study on fatigue crack retardation and retardation mechanism in variable loading, the effects of crack tip branching in fatigue crack growth retardation were examined. The characteristics of crack tip banching behavior was considered to micro structure. It was examined that the variation of crack tip branching angle. Crack tip branching was observed along the grain boundary of ferrite and pearlite structure. It was found that the abanching angle ranges from 25 to 53 degrees. Using the finite element method, the variable of crack driving force to branching angle was examined. The effective crack driving force ( $K_{\eff}$ ) decreased as the braching angle increases. The rate of decrease was 33% for the kinked type and 29% for the forked one. It was confirmed that the effect of crack tip branching is a very important factor in fatigue crack growth retardation. Therefore, crack branching effect should be considered building the hypoth- etical model to predict crack growth retardation.

Micro electrochemical machining (ECM) is conducted on stainless steel 304 using non-toxic electrolyte of citric acid. Electrochemical dissolution region is minimized by applying a few hundred second duration pulses between the tungsten SPM tip and the work material. ECM characteristics according to citric acid concentration, feeding velocity and electric conditions such as pulse amplitude, pulse frequency, and offset voltage are investigated through a series of experiments. Micro holes of $60{\mu}m$ in diameter with the depth of $50{\mu}m$ and $90{\mu}m$ in diameter with the depth of $100{\mu}m$ are perforated. Square and circular micro cavities are also manufactured by electrochemical milling. This research can contribute to the development of safe and environmentally friendly micro ECM process.
The nanoscale sensing and manipulation have become a challenging issue in micro/nano-robotic applications. In particular, a feedback sensor-based manipulation is necessary for realizing an efficient and reliable handling of particles under uncertain environment in a micro/nano scale. This paper presents a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever for nanoscale force measurement in micro robotics. A piezoresistive MEMS cantilever enables sensing of gripping and contact forces in nanonewton resolution by measuring changes in the stress-induced electrical resistances. The calibration of a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever is experimentally carried out. In addition, as part of the work on nanomanipulation with a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever, the analysis on the interaction forces between a tip and a material, and the associated manipulation strategies are investigated. Experiments and simulations show that a piezoresistive MEMS cantilever integrated into a micro robotic system can be effectively used in nanoscale force measurements and a sensor-based manipulation.

In this paper, the development process of an unique and creative micro/nano-structure fabrication technique based on micro/nano-tribology are reviewed and discussed. The so-called Mechano-Chemical Process(MCP), which has been developed since 1995 by Tribology Research Laboratory at Yonsei University with the motivation to overcome the demerits of the conventional photolithographic techniques, is based on the fundamental understanding of the interaction between the tool tip and the workpiece surface. This process is a maskless process which offers tremendous flexibility in surface patterns that can be created on a workpiece surface without using any capital intensive equipment. It Is capable of fabricating the prototypes of micro/nano-components, micro- structured surface with various geometries, micro-molds for making polymer or metal parts, and micro-fluidic channels for lab-on-a- chip

The detection of thin-layered soil is important in soft soils to evaluate the soil behavior. The smaller diameter cone penetrometer have been commonly used to detect the layer with increasing sensitivity. The objective of this study is to detect the thin-layered soil using cone resistance and electrical resistance. The cone resistivity penetration test (CRPT) is developed to evaluate the cone tip resistance and electrical resistance at the tip. The CRPT is a micro-cone which has a $0.78cm^2$ in projected area. The application test is conducted in a laboratory large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber). The kaolinite, sand and water are mixed to make the specimen at the liquid limit of 46% using a slurry mixer. It takes two months for the consolidation of the specimen. After consolidation, the CRPT test is carried out. Furthermore the standard CPT results are compared with the electrical resistance measured at the tip in the field. This study suggests that the CRPT may be a useful tool for detecting thin-layers in soft soils.
Nano adhesion and friction characteristics between SPM(scanning electron microscope) tips and flat plates of different materials were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure adhesion and friction in AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in different conditions of relative humidity. Three different Si$_3$N$_4$ tips (rdaii : 15nm, 22nm and 50 nm) and three different flat plates of Si-wafer(100), W-DLC(tungsten-incorporated diamond-like carbon) and DLC were used. Results generally showed that adhesion and friction increased with the tip radius, and W-DLC and DLC surfaces were superior to Si-wafer. But the adhesion force of Si-wafer showed non linearity with the tip radius while W-DLC and DLC surfaces showed good correlation to the “JKR model”. It was found that high adhesion force between Si-wafer and a large radius of tip was caused by a capillary action due to the condensed water.
