  • Femtosecond laser micro-processing received much attention in the past decade. The nature of ultra-short light-matter interaction permits femtosecond laser to overcome the diffraction limit and realize precise micro-processing. The ultrahigh light intensity of the femtosecond laser allows sapece-selective microscopic modifications to materials based on multiphoton processes. In this paper, we review our recent research development on space-selective precipitation and control of functional crystals in glasses by an infrared femtosecond laser. The technique will open new possibilities in the fabrication of micro-optical components with various optical functions.

  • In this paper, we studied a vibration problem that is critical and common to most precision measurement systems. For micro mechanical part measurements, results obtained from the vision-based precision measurement system may contain errors due to the vibration. In order to defeat this generic problem, for the current study, a PC based image processing technique was used first, to assess the effect of the vibration to the precision measurement and second, to develop an in-situ calibration algorithm that automatically compensate the measurement results in real time. We used a set of stereoscopic CCD cameras to acquire the images for the dimensional measurement and the reference measurement. The mapping function was obtained through the in-situ calibration to compensate the measurement results and the statistical analysis for the actual results is provided in the paper. Based on the current statistical study, it is expected to obtain high precision results for the micro measurement systems.

  • Haptic rendering is a process that provides force feedback during interactions between a user and an object. This paper presents a haptic rendering technique for a telemanipulation system of deformable objects using image processing and physically based modeling techniques. The interaction forces between an instrument driven by a haptic device and a deformable object are inferred in real time based on a continuum mechanics model of the object, which consists of a boundary element model and ${\alpha}$ priori knowledge of the object's mechanical properties. Macro- and micro-scale experimental systems, equipped with a telemanipulation system and a commercial haptic display, were developed and tested using silicone (macro-scale) and zebrafish embryos (micro-scale). The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the algorithm in different scales: two experimental systems applied the same algorithm provided haptic feedback regardless of the system scale.

  • Computed tomography(CT) has been applied to measure micro-defects in the aluminum knuckle parts manufactured by the thixoforming process. 6061 aluminum alloys were used to form knuckle samples in the semi-solid temperature after the SIMA processing of billets. Tensile specimens were cut from the different locations in a thixoformed knuckle. The size and the distribution of forming defects in tensile specimens were analyzed using CT scanning and image analysis technology before tensile tests. It has been qualitatively shown that the stress-strain curves were significantly affected by the size and the distribution of forming defects although the defect sizes lie in the range of micro-meters.

  • This paper describes an automated computer-aided engineering (CAE) system for micromachines whose size range 10 to 10$^3$${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. An automatic finite element mesh generation technique, which is based on the fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry techniques, is incorporated into the system, together with one of commercial finite clement (FE) analysis codes, MARC, and one of commercial solid modelers, Designbase. The system allows a geometry model of concern to be a automatically converted to different FE models, depending on physical phenomena to be analyzed, i.e. electrostatic analysis, stress analysis, modal analysis and so on. The FE analysis models are then exported to the FE analysis code, and then analyses are performed. This system is successfully applied to an electrostatic micro actuator.

  • The micro fabrication on the mold material using picosecond laser ablation processing has been studied. We used the two kind of system with picosecond laser. First one is two mirror type scanner and telecentric f-theta lens. Second one is X-Y stage and objective lens. By using these system, the $100{\mu}m$ size chess patterning and $2{\mu}m$ size patterning was fabricated. Especially $2{\mu}m$ size patterning on the mold material can be used as the decorative rainbow color logo for industrial field. In this paper, it is proved the picosecond laser is effective tool for the laser ablation processing.

  • Picosecond (ps) laser micro-machining has emerged as an attractive method of fabricating high-precision microstructures, especially in metals. In this paper, a metallic mold for diffraction gratings is fabricated with a mode-locked 12 ps $Nd:YVO_4$ laser. Laser pulses with a wavelength of 355nm are irradiated on the surface of NOK 80, a mold material, to generate line patterns. In order to minimize the line width, laser power is set just above the ablation threshold of NOK 80. Results show that the spectrum from the fabricated mold is good enough for some industrial application.
