  • In this study, we developed a process technology to fabricate RFID tag antennas using a one-sheet inlay micro-pattern forming process by press-molding RFID tag antennas on insulation sheet layers, such as polymer films, using ultrasonic longitudinal vibration. In addition, a fine pattern applicable for RFID tag antennas was manufactured using a $25{\mu}m$ thick thin-plate square wire; this is in contrast to the method that uses a conventional round wire. The developed ultrasonic indentation process can be used to fabricate fine pattern of the RFID antenna using one piece of equipment. The simplified manufacturing process technology has a shorter manufacturing time and is more economical. The developed RFID tag antenna forming technique involves pressing the $25{\mu}m$ square wire directly on the thin sheet insulation sheet of maximum thickness $200{\mu}m$, using a 60 kHz ultrasonic tool horn.

  • This paper deals with mirror grinding of a small-sized aspherical lens by a resin bonded diamond spherical wheel. Up to now, a spherical lens has been used for the lens of the optical communication optical part. However, recently, aspherical optical parts are mainly used in order to attempt the improvement in image quality and miniaturization of the optical device. It is possible to manufacture the aspherical lens which is presently being used in optical instrument through ultra-precision machining technology. Also, to realize compactness, efforts are being made to produce a micro aspherical lens, fur which the development of a high-precision, micro molding die is inevitable. Therefore, extensive research is being done on methods of producing a micro aspherical surface by high-precision grinding. In this paper, the spherical wheel was trued by cup-shaped truer and tool path was calculated by the radius of curvature of the wheel after truing and dressing. Then in the aspherical grinding experiment, WC material which is used as a melding die for the small-sized aspherical lens was ground. The results showed that a form accuracy of 0.1918 $\mu\textrm{m}$ P-V and a surface roughness of 0.064 $\mu\textrm{m}$ Rmax could be achieved.

  • In this study, we evaluate the anisotropic flow of droplets according to the directionality of asperities. We manufacture a mold with an inclined hole by adjusting the jig angle using a high-power diode laser. Using the manufactured mold, we prepare specimens for wettability studies by the micro molding technique. We fabricate twelve kinds of surfaces with micro-asperities inclined at 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45° for asperity pitches of 100 ㎛, 200 ㎛, and 300 ㎛. We evaluate the static and dynamic behaviors of the droplets as a function of the asperities pitch and inclination angles. The anisotropic effect increases as the pitch increases between asperities, and the anisotropic flow characteristics increase as the inclination angle of the asperities increases. On the surface with hole pitches of 100 ㎛ and 200 ㎛, the contact angle of the droplet shows high hydrophobicity at approximately 160°, but on the surface with the 300-㎛ hole pitch, the contact angle is approximately 110°, indicating that the hydrophobic effect rapidly reduces. Additionally, when the inclination angle of the asperities is approximately 30°, the left and right contact angle deviations of the droplet are the lowest, showing that the roll-off angle is relatively low.

  • In the present study, simple models were proposed to predict the capillary-driven flow length in a surfactant-added poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) rectangular microchannel. Owing to the hydrophobic nature of PDMS, it is difficult to transport water in a conventional PDMS microchannel by means of the capillary force alone. To overcome this problem, microchannels with a hydrophilic surface were fabricated using surfactant-added PDMS. By measuring the contact angle change on the surfactant-added PDMS surface, the behavior was investigated to establish a simple model. In order to predict the filling length induced by the capillary force, the Washburn equation was modified in the present study. From the investigation, it was found that the initial rate-of-change of the contact angle affected the filling length. Simple models were developed for three representative cases, and these can be useful tools in designing microfluidic manufacturing techniques including MIcroMolding In Capillaries (MIMIC).

  • The demand for small and high-capacity optical data storage devices has rapidly increased. The areal density of optical disk is increased using higher numerical aperture objective lens and shorter wavelength source. A wafer-scale stacked micro objective lens with a numerical aperture of 0.85 and a focal length of 0.467mm for the 405nm blue- violet laser was designed and fabricated. A diffractive optical element (DOE) was used to compensate the spherical aberration of the objective lens. Among the various fabrication methods for micro DOE, the UV-replication process is more suitable for mass-production. In this study, an 8-stepped DOE pattern as a master was fabricated by photolithography and reactive ion etching process. A flexible mold was fabricated for improving the releasing properties and shape accuracy in UV-molding process. In the replication process, the effects of exposing time and applied pressure on the replication quality were analyzed. Finally, the shapes of master, mold and molded pattern were measured by optical scanning profiler. The deviation between the master and the molded DOE was less than 0.1um. The efficiency of the molded DOE was measured by DOE efficiency measurement system which consists of laser source, sample holder, aperture and optical power meter, and the measured value was $84.5\%$.

  • LCD-BLU (Liquid Crystal Display - Back Light Unit) is one of kernel parts of LCD unit and it consists of several optical sheets(such as prism, diffuser and protector sheets), LGP (Light Guiding Plate), light source (CCFL or LED) and mold frame. The LGP of LCD-BLU is usually manufactured by forming numerous dots with $50{\sim}200$ um in diameter on it by etching process. But the surface of the etched dots of LGP is very rough due to the characteristics of the etching process during the mold fabrication, so that its light loss is high along with the dispersion of light into the surface. Accordingly, there is a limit in raising the luminance of LCD-BLU. In order to overcome the limit of current etched dot patterned LGP, optical pattern design with 50um micro-lens was applied in the present study. The micro-lens pattern fabricated by modified LiGA with thermal reflow process was applied to the optical design of LGP. The attention was paid to the effects of different aspect ratio (i.e. $0.2{\sim}0.5$) of optical pattern conditions to the brightness distribution of BLU with micro-lens patterned LGP. Finally, high aspect ratio micro-lens patterned LGP showed superior results to the one made by low aspect ratio in average luminance.

  • There is a great demand for reducing the amount of material used in mass-produced plastics parts for material cost constitutes a large percentage of the total cost of a product up to 75% It may be noted that the price of plastics is directly related to the price of petroleum. Material reduction therefore decreases the amount of oil needed for the manufacture of plastics and thus help conserve this natural resource. Therefore microcellular foaming process(MCPs) was studied for solving this problems alternatively in 1980's at M. I. T. Until now in microcellular plastics processes carbon dioxide gas was mainly used for microcellular foaming Because carbon dioxide has more solubility than any other gases such as nitrogen gas or helium gas. The purpose of the this research is measurement of changing of the microcellular plastics' weight by using nitrogen gas in injection molding an comparing weight reduction of microcellular foamed plastics for using carbon dioxide gas with nitrogen gas.

  • Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a widely used material for replicating micro-structures because of its transparency, deformability, and easy fabrication. At the nanoscale, however, it is hard to fill a nanohole template with uncured PDMS. This paper introduces several simple methods by changing the surface energy of a nanohole template and PDMS elastomer for replicating 100nm-scale structures. In the case of template, pristine anodic aluminum oxide (AAO), hydrophobically treated AAO, and hydrophillically treated AAO are used. For the surface energy change of the PDMS elastomer, a hydrophilic additive and dilution solvent are added in the PDMS prepolymer. During the molding process, a simple casting method is used for all combinations of the treated template and modified PDMS. The nanostructured PDMS surface was investigated with a scanning electron microscope after the molding process for verification.

  • Stamps for microcontact processing are fabricated by casting elastomer such as PDMS on a master with a negative of the desired pattern. After curing, the PDMS stamp is peeled away from the master and exposed to a solution of ink and then dried. Transfer of the ink from the PDMS stamp to the substrate occurs during a brief contact between stamp and substrate. Generally, negative-tone masters, which are used for making positive-tone PDMS stamps, are fabricated by using photolithographic technique. The shortcomings of photolithography are a relative high-cost process and require extensive processing time and heavy capital investment to build and maintain the fabrication facilities. The goal of this study is to fabricate a negative-tone master by using Nano-indenter based patterning technique. Various sizes of V-grooves and U-groove were fabricated by using the combination of nanoscratch and HF isotropic etching technique. An achieved negative-tone structure was used as a master in the PDMS replica molding process to fabricate a positive-tone PDMS stamp.

  • Fresnel lens is a kind of refractive optical lens with various advantages. It has nearly flat shaped optical lens that has small mass. Fresnel lens has number of applications in the compact optical systems. Recently, demands of high quality Fresnel lens for small size optical systems such as illumination units, compact imaging systems, display units, information storage systems, optical detecting units had increased rapidly. Conventional manufacturing process of high quality Fresnel lens is direct machining. However, it is not suitable for mass production because of high cost and long cycle time. Replication method can provide cost effective mass production process. However, there are various issues about replication of Fresnel lens. Fresnel lens has number of sharp blade shape prism. In the replication process, this blade shape causes defects that can affect optical efficiency. In this study, replication processes; injection molding process and UV imprinting process, were developed and evaluated using Fresnel lens that has maximum pattern height of $250\;{\mu}m$ and aspect ratio of 1.5.
