  • For the accuracy correction of the micro-positioning industrial robot, micro-manipulator has been devised. The compliant mechanisms using piezoelectric actuators is necessary geometrically and structurally to be developed by the optimization approaches. The overall geometric advantage as the mechanical efficiencies of the mechanism are considered as objective functions, which respectively art the ratio of output displacement to input force, and their constraints are the vertical notion of supporting leg and the structural strength of manipulation. In optimizing the compliant mechanical amplifier, the sequential linear programming and an optimality criteria method are used for the geometrical dimensions of compliant bridges and flexure hinges. This paper presents the integrated design process which not only can maximize the mechanism feasibilities but also can ensure the positioning accuracy and sufficient workspace. Experiment and simulation are presented for validating the design process through the comparisons of the kinematical and structural performances.

  • 마이크로 매니퓰레이션에서는 제어에 활용 할 수 있는 센싱 정보의 제약, 마이크로 영역 특유의 물리현상 등으로 인하여 원하는 제어 성능을 달성하는데 큰 어려움이 따른다. 마이크로 영역의 여러 센싱 정보 중에서 특히 비젼 정보를 잘 활용하면 이러한 제약을 크게 완화할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 실시간 영상처리를 통해 페루프 제어도 가능하다. 대부분의 마이크로 비젼 시스템에서는 초점 심도가 낮고 초점 영역의 선택에 제약이 따르기 때문에 종횡비가 큰 3차원 마이크로 부품을 인식하고 조작하는데 큰 어려움이 있다. 본 논문에서는 3차원 마이크로 부품의 조작을 위해, 초점 영역의 선택이 가능한 마이크로 비전 시스템을 제안하고 실험을 통하여 그 유용성을 실증하였다.

Optically Actuated Carbon Nanocoils

  • Optical manipulation on microscale and nanoscale structures opens up new possibilities for assembly and control of microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems. Static optical force induces constant displacement while changing optical force stimulates vibration of a microcantilever/nanocantilever. The vibratory behavior of a single carbon nanocoil cantilever under optical actuation is investigated. A fitting formula to describe the laser-induced vibration characteristics is deduced based on a classical continuum model, by which the resonance frequency of the carbon nanocoil can be determined directly and accurately. This optically actuated vibration method could be widely used in stimulating quasi-1D micro/nanorod-like materials, and has potential applications in micro-/nano-opto-electromechanical systems.

  • The techniques for manipulation of various micro-tools were essential for particle isolation and chemical analysis of micro-size particles. This report described the detailed techniques for the preparation and handling of several micro-tools. Presence of uranium particles in smeared filter paper were identified by using the solid track detector. The uranium particles were isolated using the micro-tools under the stereomicroscope and then transferred to the filament of TIMS for the determination of isotope ratios.

Interplays between human microbiota and microRNAs in COVID-19 pathogenesis: a literature review

  • [Purpose] Recent studies have shown that COVID-19 is often associated with altered gut microbiota composition and reflects disease severity. Furthermore, various reports suggest that the interaction between COVID-19 and host-microbiota homeostasis is mediated through the modulation of microRNAs (miRNAs). Thus, in this review, we aim to summarize the association between human microbiota and miRNAs in COVID-19 pathogenesis. [Methods] We searched for the existing literature using the keywords such "COVID-19 or microbiota," "microbiota or microRNA," and "COVID-19 or probiotics" in PubMed until March 31, 2021. Subsequently, we thoroughly reviewed the articles related to microbiota and miRNAs in COVID-19 to generate a comprehensive picture depicting the association between human microbiota and microRNAs in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. [Results] There exists strong experimental evidence suggesting that the composition and diversity of human microbiota are altered in COVID-19 patients, implicating a bidirectional association between the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. In addition, SARS-CoV-2 encoded miRNAs and host cellular microRNAs modulated by human microbiota can interfere with viral replication and regulate host gene expression involved in the initiation and progression of COVID-19. These findings suggest that the manipulation of human microbiota with probiotics may play a significant role against SARS-CoV-2 infection by enhancing the host immune system and lowering the inflammatory status. [Conclusion] The human microbiota-miRNA axis can be used as a therapeutic approach for COVID-19. Hence, further studies are needed to investigate the exact molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of miRNA expression in human microbiota and how these miRNA profiles mediate viral infection through host-microbe interactions.

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the major healthcare problems worldwide and its processes of genesis include a sequence of molecular pathways from adenoma to carcinoma. The discovery of microRNAs, a subset of regulatory non-coding RNAs, has added new insights into CRC diagnosis and management. Together with several causes of colorectal neoplasia, aberrant expression of oncomiRs (oncogenic and tumor suppressor miRNAs) in cancer cells was found to be indirectly result in up- or down-regulation of targeted mRNAs specific to tumor promoter or inhibitor genes. The study of miRNAs as CRC biomarkers utilizes expression profiling methods from traditional tissue samples along with newly introduced non-invasive samples of faeces and body fluids. In addition, miRNAs could be employed to predict chemo- and radio-therapy responses and be manipulated in order to alleviate CRC characteristics. The scope of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of scientific literature describing aberrantly expressed miRNAs, and consequently dysregulation of targeted mRNAs along with the potential role of miRNAs in CRC diagnosis and prognosis, as well as to summarize the recent findings on miRNA-based manipulation methods with the aim of advancing in anti-CRC therapies.

Telerobot System for Biocell Manipulation (바이오셀 조작을 위한 원격조작 로봇 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose a novel manipulator intended for the needs of telerobotic micromanipulation. We designed an original manipulator capable of performing fine motion with an accuracy greater than $2{\mu}m$, while remaining simple in design and easy in control. Preliminary calculations of manipulator accuracy have been conducted, and the device has been designed and manufactured accordingly. The accuracy of the proposed manipulator has been verified during the series micro-positioning experiments under different types of controllers, and the results proved that the manipulator is suitable for micromanipulation applications as a part of telerobotic system. The proposed manipulator has been compared to existing analogues by several parameters, and both its advantages and disadvantages have been discussed.

  • 생물학적인 셀 인젝션 기술은 유전자 주입, 시험관 배양, 인공수정 및 신약개발 분야에서 광범위하게 사용되어 오고 있는 기술이다. 생물공학에서 다루는 셀 인젝션 기술은 크게 착생세포 인젝션과 서스펜디드 셀 인젝션으로 구분할 수 있다. 최근 상용화 장비로 출시되고 있는 것들은 착생세포에 대한 자동 인젝션 시스템이 대부분을 차지하고 있다. 반면, 서스펜디드 셀 인젝션 시스템의 경우는 비교적 최근들어 자동화 장비 및 방법론의 개발에 대한 논의가 이루어지고 있는 실정으로 실제 수많은 연구자들의 노력에 힘입어 서스펜디드 셀을 대상으로 한 통합 자동화 셀 인젝션 시스템의 개발이 가속화되고 있기는 하지만 이에 대한 만족할 만한 성과는 아직 이루어 지지 않고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문은 서스펜디드 셀을 대상으로 한 인젝션 시스템 개발에 관한 것으로 특히 셀 홀딩 시스템과 최적의 인젝션 피펫 궤적을 결정하기 위한 시스템 개발에 관한 것이다. 본 논문에서 다루어지는 서스펜디드 셀은 통합 자동화를 위하여 특별히 고안된 셀홀딩 시스템에 의하여 배열의 형태로 고정되며, 셀 인젝션 시스템은 엠브리오와 인젝션 피켓을 이미지 프로세싱 기술에 의하여 인식하고 피펫의 인젝션 궤적을 결정하는 것을 포함하고 있다.

Manufacturing Functional Nano-Composites by Using Field-Aided Micro-Tailoring Manipulation (Field-Aided Micro-Tailoring에 의한 기능성 나노복합재 제조)

  • One of a unique technique in manipulating a multifunctional composite is demonstrated in this study. An electric field is applied to a liquid suspension in order to align the inclusions along with the direction electric field. This is called FAiMTa(Field Aided Micro Tailoring). It makes orthotropic polymer composites by arranging the micro and/or nano size particle inclusions in chain-line formation. Several kinds of particles such as $Al_2O_3$, graphite, CNT(Carbon Nano Tube), W(Tungsten) are tested to verify the effectiveness of the FAiMTa. The particles redistributed in an epoxy suspension and their coupons show that mechanical and thermal properties of orthotropic and random composites containing those particles depend on the trend of particles' alignment. The micro-images of the functional composite from FAiMTa have been captures and their physical properties demonstrate their wide-range and state-of-the-art application for advanced multifunctional composites.

Programmable Magnetic Actuation of Biomolecule Carriers using NiFe Stepping Stones

  • We have designed, fabricated and demonstrated a novel micro-system for programmable magnetic actuation using magnetic elliptical pathways on Si substrates. Lithographically patterned soft NiFe ellipses are arranged sequentially perpendicular to each other as stepping stones for the transport of magnetic beads. We have measured the magnetization curve of the ellipsoid ($9\;{\mu}m{\times}4\;{\mu}m{\times}0.1\;{\mu}m$) elements with respect to the long and short axes of the ellipse. We found that the magnetization in the long axis direction is larger than that in the short axis direction for an applied field of ${\leq}$ 1,000 Oe, causing a force on carriers that causes them to move from one element to another. We have successfully demonstrated a micro-system for the magnetic actuation of biomolecule carriers of superparamagnetic beads (Dynabead$^{(R)}$ 2.8 ${\mu}m$) by rotating the external magnetic field. This novel concept of magnetic actuation is useful for future integrated lab-on-a-chip systems for biomolecule manipulation, separation and analysis.
