  • Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a non-contact manner, and has been recently applied to the injection molding due to its capability of rapid heating and cooling of mold surface. The present study covers a three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate heating efficiency and structural safety of the induction heating process of an injection mold. To simulate the induction heating process, an integrated simulation method is proposed by effectively connecting an electromagnetic field analysis, a transient heat transfer analysis and a thermal stress analysis. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various types of induction coil, from which heating efficiency according to the coil shape is discussed. The resulting thermal stress distributions of the mold plate for various types of induction coils are also evaluated and discussed in terms of the structural safety.

  • Until recently post-processing of finite element model has been Heavily relied on expensive graphic peripheral devices. For this reason many engineers and researchers can not afford to access to the graphics. with the aid of inexpensive personal computers very econmical post-processor graphics program called MICRO-POST has been developed in conjunction with low-cost printers and plotters. Model geometry or results of analysis for the unlimitted meshes either produced by mainframe or microcomputer can be easily and economi-call presented in a number of different graphic devices. The paper presents the procedure obtaining the device the independent graphics, and the structure and functions of the program. It also describes a new error-preventive dialogue type input technique to control the plot operation in an interactive manner. Through the post-processing examples for the general purpose finite element programs, it demonstrates the usefulness of the program.

  • Mechanical behavior of a piezoelectric actuator is studied as a preceding research for the manufacturing of three-dimensional micro-structures. It is needed to examine the simulation of a piezoelectric actuator according to applied direction of voltage, by researching displacement characterization of piezoelectric material through piezoelectric theory. To this end, finite element modeling is employed to study the response of a piezoelectric material under the various input voltages. Where the actuator is simulated by use of ANSYS. To avoid direct contact piezoelectric material with working fluid, silicon, polymer, etc., the actuator is modeled with nickel fixed diaphragm.

  • This study presents a macro-modeling procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete panels under blast loading. The analysis procedure treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material based on a smeared rotating crack model within the context of total-load secant stiffness-based formulation. A direct time integration method compatible with the analysis formulation is adapted to solve the dynamic equation of motion. Considerations are made to account for strain rate effects. The analysis procedure is verified by modeling 14 blast tests from various sources reported in the literature including a blast simulation contest. The analysis results are compared against those obtained from experiments, simplified single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) methods, and sophisticated hydrocodes. It is demonstrated that the smeared crack macro-modeling approach is a viable alternative analysis procedure that gives more information about the structural behavior than SDOF methods, but does not require detailed micro-modeling and extensive material characterization typically needed with hydrocodes.

  • The finite element programs have been developed for structure, collision, flow, dynamics, heat transfer, acoustics, electromagnetism, MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), and etc. These programs can be classified as either "package" program or "single purpose" program. Single purpose programs usually have convenient and powerful functions, but these programs have limited expandability to different fields of analysis. Therefore, the method to converter the analysis results of single purpose program to other programs is needed. In the research, multi-body data conversion methods of 1) finite element model and 2) solid model were created to convert fluid analysis result of CFD-ACE+ to ANSYS data structure. Automatic boundary condition algorithms were developed for blade, and finite element model was compared with solid model. It is expected that, by sealess data transfer, the Multi-body Data Conversion Program could reduce the development period of torque converters.

  • The majority of research that has been performed on cracking potential of concrete by shrinkage has assumed that concrete acts as a homogeneous material. However, with this approach, it is not able to evaluate the micro-cracking behavior in concrete due to autogenous shrinkage under unrestrained boundary condition (free boundary condition) nor to understand the cracking behavior properly because of the heterogeneous nature of concrete. To better understand the micro-cracking behavior of concrete induced by autogenous shrinkage, series of experiments were performed measuring the length change and acoustic emission energy. As an analytical approach, this research uses an object oriented finite element analysis code (OOF code) to simulate the behavior of the concrete on a meso-scale. The concrete images used in the simulations were directly obtained from mortar samples. From the experiments and simulation results, it was able to better understand the micro-cracking behaviour of concrete due to shrinking of paste phase and internal restraint by aggregates.

  • The recent trend towards miniaturization causes an increased demand for parts with very small dimensions. Milli-structure components are classified as a component group whose size is between macro- and micro-scale. The manufacturing process of these components of thin sheet metal forming has a microscopic properties in addition to a typical phenomenon of bulk deformation because of the forming size. Also, the material properties and the deformation behavior change with miniaturization, which means that, a coarse grained materials show a higher resistance against deformation, when the grain size is in the range of the sheet thickness. In this study, a new numerical approach is proposed to simulate intergranular milli-structure in forming by the finite element method. The grain element and grain boundary element are introduced to simulate the milli-structure in the bending. The grain element is used to analyze the deformation of individual grain while the grain boundary element is for the investigation on the movement of the grain boundary. Also, the result of the finite element analysis is confirmed by a series of milli-sized forming experiments.

  • Manufacturing process for milli components has recently gained researcher's focus with the increasing tendency toward highly integrated and micro-scaled parts for electronic devices. The milli-components cannot be formed by the conventional manufacturing process since the parts require higher dimensional accuracy than the conventional ones. In order to enhance the forming accuracy and productivity, various forming procedures proposed and studied by many researchers. In this paper, forming analysis of milli-components has been studied with a new micro-former. In modeling of progressive dies, multi-stage forming sequence has been analyzed with finite element analysis by LS-DYNA3D. The analysis proposes the sequential die and part shapes with the corresponding punch force and dimensional accuracy. The analysis also considers the effect of elastic dies on the dimensional accuracy of the formed parts. The analysis result demonstrates that the elastic analysis in the milli-forming process is indispensable fur accurate forming analysis. The analysis procedure in the paper will provide good information in design of a new micro-former and milli-component.

  • The finite element method is applied to analyze the deformation mechanisms in the closed-cell Al foam under the compression. The modeling of the real cellular structure proceeds with the concept of the reverse engineering. First of all, the small, $10{\times}\;10{\times}\;10mm^3$ sized specimens of the closed-cell Al foam are prepared. The micro focus X-ray CTsystem of SHIMADZU Corp. is used to scan the full structures of the specimens. The scanned structures are converted to the geometric surfaces and solids through the software for 3-D scan data processing, RapidFormTMof INUS Tech. Inc. Then the solid meshes are directly generated on the converted geometric solids for the finite element analysis. The large elastic-plastic deformation and 3-D contact problems for the Al cellular material are considered. The clear and successful analysis for the deformation mechanisms in the closed-cell Al foam is carried out through the comparison of the numerical results in this research with the referred experimental ones.
