With the invention of the inlaying technique for celadon in the latter half of the 12th century, the Koryo potters reached a new height of artistic and scientific achievement in ceramics chemical technology. Inlaid celadon shards, collected in 1991 during the surface investigation of Kangjin kilns found on the southwestern shore of South Korea, were imbedded in epoxy resin and polished for cross-section examination. Backscattered electron images were taken with an electron microprobe equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The spectrometer was also used to determine the composition of micro-areas. Porcelain stone, weathered rock of quartz, mica, and feldspar composition were found to be the raw material for the body and important components in the glaze and white inlay. The close similarity between glaze and black inlay in the microstructure suggests that the glaze material was modified by adding clay with high iron content, such as biotite, for use as black inlay. The deep soft translucent quality of celadon glaze is brought about by its microstructure of bubbles, remnant and devitrified minerals, and the schlieren effect.
Dynamic behavior of immiscible gas bubble attached to the wall in channel flow plays very important role in many engineering applications. Special attention has been paid to micro direct methanol fuel cell(${\mu}$DMFC) where surface tension becomes dominant factor with minor gravitational effect due to its reduced size. Therefore, displacement of $CO_2$ bubble generating on a cathode side in ${\mu}$DMFC can be very difficult and efficient removal of $CO_2$ bubbles will affect the overall machine performance considerably. We have focused our efforts on studying the dynamic behavior of immiscible bubble attached to the one side of the wall on 2D rectangular channel subject to external shear flow. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is the simplified version of front tracking method to track the bubble interface motion. Effects of Reynolds number, Weber number, advancing/receding contact angle and property ratio on bubble detachment characteristic has been numerically identified.
Bubble growth on microheater has been experimentally investigated in this study. The experiment was performed using platinum micro heaters having dimensions of $100{\times}10{\times}0.2{\mu}m^3$ with constant heat flux. A high speed video camera was used to observe bubble growth at 250 frames per second. Microheater temperature was measured at the rate of 300Hz with a data acquisition system. When heater temperature was $139^{\circ}C$ a bubble was nucleated in the liquid FC-72. The temperature profiles and the high speed camera images were combined to explain heat transfer and bubble growth on microheater.
The bubble oscillations play an important role in ultrasonic cleaning processes. In the ultrasonic cleaning of semiconductor wafers, the cleaning process often damages micro/nano scale patterns while removing contaminant particles. However, the understanding of how patterns in semiconductor wafers are damaged during ultrasonic cleaning is far from complete yet. Here, we report the observations of the motion of bubbles that induce solid wall damage under 26 kHz continuous ultrasonic waves. We classified the motions into the four types, i.e. volume motion, shape motion, splitting or jetting motion and chaotic motion. Our experimental results show that bubble oscillations get unstable and nonlinear as the ultrasonic amplitude increases, which may exert a large stress on a solid surface raising the possibility of damaging microstructures.
The reproducibility of water droplet formation which is indispensible in the investigation of a drop-on-demand piezoelectrically driven inkjet was verified by checking the size of droplet and distance from the nozzle tip of inkjet head to droplet. Based on the reproducibility of droplet formation, we visualized the formation of micro-scale droplets by acquiring consecutive images at the jetting frequency of 500 Hz for which air bubbles were not generated. Two different electric waveforms were used to drive the piezoelectric actuator. The visualization system consists of a high-speed camera that can capture images up to 250,000fps, a long-distance microscope and a halogen lamp as a light source.
This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. Aerated lubricant influences two major factors on the film formation. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change by the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble. Those two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed with the consideration of aerated ratio in the lubricant and journal locus is computed with the Mobility method after the computation of two dimensional pressure distributions over the bearing area.
The calibration of O.M.D is carried out experimentally and is analysed theoretically. O.M.D experimentally measures the change in optical density of artificially contaminated oil which contains Fe powder of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 70, 100, 200 ppm. The change in optical density, D$_1$ means the logarithmic transmittance of I$_0$ over $I_1 D_2$ denotes the logarithmic transmittance I$_2$ over I$_1$ on electromagnetic force which arranges the ferrous particles along the line of magnetic force. The theoretical D$_1$ which increases linearly as increasing Fe concentrations, is analysed by light attenuation theory. The difference between theoretical D$_1$ and experimental D$_1$ is due to the attenuation of micro bubbles and the agglomeration of fine particles in the sample oil. The calibrated O.M.D is applied to the sample oil from the high-powered diesel engine. Also the results are compared with those out of the off-line techniques such as JOAP and ICP.
For the experiment the four types of spacer were distinguished by arrangement. The flashover characteristic on each types of spacer was investigated and the flashover phenomena were observed to understand breakdown mechanism in liquid nitrogen($LN_{2}$). The spacer should be placed interior coil as an insulator, a cooling channel and s supporter of structures. The simulated electrode used in the experiment was made from five turns of HTS tape. Experimental results revealed that multi-layer and barrier effects did work well in Air but did not in $LN_{2}$. These result suggested that the flashover in LN2 caused by the bubbles due to partial discharge at micro gap, g. The flashover characteristics decreased to 70% when g is 0.2 mm. The degradation was improved by even treatment on surface of coil electrode.
The performances of electroflotation (EF) on the thickening of activated sludge were investigated using laboratory scale batch flotation reactors. Four activated sludges including bulking sludges were tested. After 30minutes of EF operation, 57-84 % of sludge volume reduction could be achieved by EF, while only about 1.5-14% could be obtained by gravity thickening for the same period. After thickening the effluent water quality in terms of TCOD, SS, and turbidity was improved by EF operation for all sludge samples. It is induced that the air bubbles entrapped in the thickened sludge play a key role in the observed improvement of sludge thickening and effluent quality.
