  • The Kusandong Tuff, known as a representative key bed in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, is a crystal-rich tuff of pyroclastic flow and surge origin. It is 1-4 m thick and laterally extends for more than 200 km intercalated in the upper part of the Hayang Croup. Observations and analyses of the feldspar crystals in the tuff, using polarizing microscopes, EPMA, and BSE images, reveal that the plagioclase crystals in the tuff were completely albitized (>$97\%$ Ab) whereas those in the southernmost localities where the tuff is rich in fine ash matrix are unaltered or partly albitized. K-feldspars are partly albitized at all localities, irrespective of the matrix content of the tuff, Perthitic textures, chessboard twinning, albitization along micro-fractures and cleavages, and the relationship between matrix content and the degree of albitization suggest that feldspars in the Kusandong Tuff were albitized by Na-rich fluid after burial. Albitization is interpreted to start preferentially along micro-fractures and cleavages and be hampered in matrix-rich tuffs with a low permeability. Original composition of the plagioclases in the Kusandong Tuff is also interpreted to have ranged between oligoclase and andesine ($Ab_{62.5}-Ab_{83.3}$) before the albitization.

  • The strawberry cultivar Hokowase showing rapid wilting and death around harvest time was first found in the fold at Woongcheon, Chungnam province in 1974. The fungus, Fusarium oxysporum was isolated frequently from the crown, petiole and root of strawberry plants collected from Woongcheon and was pathogenic to Hokowase. The fungus abundantly produced micro-and macro-conidia and chiamydospore on PSA. The size of micro conidia, macro conidia and Chlamydospores was $5.0\~13.0\times2.5\~3.0,\;12.8\~62.5\times2.5\times50\mu\;and\;7.5\~13.8\times5.5\~12.5\mu$, respectively. Mycelial growth of the fungus was best between $25\~30^{\circ}C$ on PSA. The disease at Woongcheon occurred from the end of March and incidence of the disease increased from the beginning of May reaching $40.2\%$ of diseased Plants at the 1st part of June. In laboratory and field evaluation tests with twelve fungicides, Difolatan, Benlate T and Tospin M showed some control effects against the disease although they did not show ignificant differences in effects compared with that of the non-treatment. The cultivar Yachiyo, Daehak 1, Line 10-2, and Senga Sengana were highly resistant, and Harunoka and Empire were moderate resistant whereas Northwest and Hokowase were highly susceptible to the fungus under field condition.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a method for exploring hotspot patterns of house price volatility where there is a high fluctuation in price and homogeneity of direction of price volatility. These patterns are formed when the majority of householders in an area show an adaptive tendency in their decision making. This paper suggests a method that consists of two analytical parts. The first part uses spatial scan statistics to detect spatial clusters of houses with a positive range of price volatility. The second part utilizes local Moran's I to evaluate the homogeneity of direction of price volatility within each cluster. The method is applied to the areas of Gangnam-Gu, Seocho-Gu, and Songpa-Gu in Seoul from August to November of 2003; the Participatory Government of Korea designated these areas and this period as the most speculative. The results of the analysis show that the area around Gaepo-Dong was as a hotspot before the Government's anti-speculative 10.29 policy in 2003; the house prices in the same area stabilized in October, 2003 and the area was identified as a coldspot in December, 2003. This case study shows that the suggested method enables exploration of hotspot of house price volatility at micro spatial scales which had not been detected by visual analysis.

  • For moderately jointed to massive rock masses, the failure and deformation behaviors around an excavated opening are absolutely influenced by the initial rock stress and strength of in-situ rock mass. The localized and progressive brittle failure around an opening does not mean whole collapse of an excavated opening. But, for many cases, it may induce temporary stopping of excavation works and reexamination of the current supporting system, which can result in delay of the entire construction works and additional construction cost. In this paper, the characteristics of the brittle failure around an opening with stress level and tunnel shape was studied by the biaxial compressive test using scaled specimen and by the numerical simulation with $PFC^{2D}$. The biaxial test results were well coincided with the stress induced failure patterns around the excavated openings observed and monitored in the in-situ condition. For the circular part of the opening wall, the stress induced cracks initially occurred at the wall surface in the direction of the minimum principal stress and contributed to the localized notch shaped failure region having a certain range of angle. But for the corner and straight part of the opening wall, the cracks initiated at sharp corners were connected and coalesced each other and with existing micro cracks. Further they resulted in a big notch shaped failure region connecting two sharp corners.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of replacing perlite (PL) with pellets processed with poultry feather fiber as an inert material to prepare growing medium. The growth and flowering of Salvia splendens 'Vista Red' grown in individual growing medium $Biosangto^{(R)}$, peat moss (PM), PL, and two pellets (P45-1 and P45-2) were evaluated. Peat moss was mixed with PL, P45-1, or P45-2 at various ratios (1:0 to 1:3 or 3:1 by volume) to investigate the feasibility of replacing PL with pellets. Nutrient composition of the growing medium and leaf tissues was analyzed. The number of florets, inflorescence length, plant height, and fresh weight of plants grown in media containing P45-1 or P45-2 were reduced compared to those grown in individual growing medium PM or PL. As the mixing ratio of P45-1 or P45-2 to PM was higher, the growth of salvia, such as inflorescence length, plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight was inhibited. Our results indicate that mixing three parts PM with one part of P45-1 (PM/P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM/P45-2/3:1) accelerated flowering and increased the number of florets and leaves compared to other mixing ratios of PM and pellets media. The concentrations of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), boron (B), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) in individual growing medium PL, P45-1, and P45-2 were significantly lower than those in PM. The concentration of N was the highest in leaves of plants grown in P45-1 or P45-2 amended media, and the concentrations of P, Ca, and zinc (Zn) in leaves were lower in individual growing medium P45-1 or P45-2 than in PM and PL. The pH of PM/P45-1/3:1 or PM/P45-2/3:1 media was maintained at optimal level (5.8-5.9) and the concentrations of macro- and micro-elements in the media and leaves were considered to be optimal levels. Therefore, mixing three parts PM with one part P45-1(PM:P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM:P45-2/3:1) is recommended for improved growth and flowering in salvia. This suggests that P45-1 or P45-2 can replace PL as an inert material to prepare growing medium.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of suggested etching method on the performance of pits and fissures sealant. In the first part, seventy extracted sound human permanent third molars and premolars were used. The teeth were randomly divided and performed in three different groups as follows : conventional etching, enameloplasty, and testing group. Non-pumicing, dye-guidance vigorous brushing-start etching technique was applied on the occlusal of testing group. Then the pit and fissure sealant was applied on all of the specimens. After the thermocycling and immersing in 1% methylene blue, the resin embedded sections were made. The microleakage data on the section were then recorded under the stereoscope and statistic analysis was done. Additional experiments were also performed : direct fissure surface etched pattern experiment, replica study, and micro-shear bond strength testing observation. The second part included two groups. A paired study was designed to evaluate the influence the environment has on the performance of the sealant. After etching, half of each occlusal surface received one of the two following treatments in succession: sealing in laboratory and intraoral condition (group 1), sealing in intraoral condition with and without a single-bonding agent (group 2). The results of present study can be summarized as follows: - The microleakage of testing group was significant different with conventional method (P<.05) and was not different with the enameloplasty group (P>.05). - The quality and quantity of etched enamel were improved. - Microshear bond strength of testing group was higher than control group (p<.05). - The environmental condition was influenced on the performance of the sealant. The testing etching method modified the capacity of the etching agent to penetrate into the pits and fissures, and simultaneous enhance their efficiency in vitro condition.

  • The control of the surface energy by electrohydrodynamic force provides electrospraying with various potential advantages such as simple particle size control, mono-dispersity, high recovery, and mild processing conditions. The advantages are quite helpful to improve the stability of protein drug and control its release. Herein, the nano-encapsulation of protein drugs using electrospraying was investigated. Albumin as a model protein was processed using uniaxial and co-axial electrospraying, and chitosan, polycaporlactone (PCL), and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) were used as encapsulation materials. The major processing parameters such as the conductivity of spraying liquids, flow rate, the distance of electrical potential gradient, etc were measured to obtain the maximum efficiency. In the chitosan systems, mean particles size decreases as flow rate and the distance between nozzle and the collecting part decreases. In the uniaxial technique of the PCL systems, mean particles size decreases as flow rate decreases. In the coaxial technique of the PCL systems, it was found that the particles size gets larger under the application of the higher ratio of inner-to-outer liquid flow rates. The primary particles formed out of an electrospraying nozzle showed narrow particle size distribution, but once they arrived to the collecting part, aggregation behavior was observed obviously. Efficient nano-encapsulation of albumin with PCL, PEG, and chitosan was conveniently achieved using electrospraying at above 12 kV.

  • Purpose: Developments in micro/macrostructures of implants and surgical techniques brought out stable outcomes of implant dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distributions of implant patients, the types of implanted sites, and the success or survival rates of various implant systems and to analyze the implant placement done at each specificintraoral site and situation. Materials and Methods: The data of dental implantations collected between 1992 and 2006 at the Department of Periodontology in 00000 University Hospital were analyzed. Results: 1. Largest part of the patients were at the age of 40s and 50s in bothgender who lost their teeth mostly by periodontaldiseases and caries at the posterior intraoral sites as major ones. Bone densities of type II(mandible) and III(maxilla) were likely to be seen with quantity of type B. Lengths of the implants between 10 and 15 mm and wide platform took the largest part. 2. Survival rates of $Implantium^{(R)}(98.8%)$, $Xive^{(R)}(100%)$ and ITI $TE^{(R)}(100%)$ were high when $Frialit-2^{(R)}$ showed 82%(poor bone density area) or 87.2%(combined with additional therapy). $IMZ^{(R)}$ had lowest cumulative survival(67.5%) and success rate(49.4%) amongst all. 3. Replacement with 2 wide or 3 regular platforms showed no significant differences in survival rate and marginal bone loss atmandibular posterior area. In single restoration of mandibular second molar, 5-year success rate of machined surface $Br{\aa}nemark^{(R)}(70.37%)$ was lower than that of rough surface $ITI^{(R)}$ SLA(100%). 4. Replacement of single tooth in anterior area showed high survival rate of 94.5%. 5. The success rates of $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite and ITI SLA at posterior maxilla with poor bone density both showed stable outcomes. 6. 10-year cumulative survival rate of implants with maxillary sinus augmentation by lateral window approach appeared to be 96.60%. Low survival rate(75%) was shown when there were more than two complications combined. Height of grafted bone remained stable above the implant apex. Conclusions : Rough surfaced implants showed stable outcomes in most of the situation including poor bone density and additional therapy combined.
