Preparation of Pt impregnated Nafion self-humidifying membranes for PEMFC using supercritical $CO_2$ (초임계 함침법을 이용한 PEMFC용 Pt/Nafion 자가가습막의 제조 연구)

  • Pt/Nafion self-humidifying membranes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) were synthesized via supercritical-impregnation methods. The Nafion 112 membranes were impregnated with Pt(II)$(acetylacetonate)_2$ from a supercritical carbon dioxide $(scCO_2)$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$ and 30MPa. After the impregnation, the pressure decreased slowly by releasing $CO_2$. And the Pt-impregnated Nafion membrane was converted Pt deposited Nafion membrane by reducing agent, sodium borohydride $(NaBH_4)$ with various concentrations under $50^{\circ}C$ and 2 hours. The prepared Pt-impregnated Nafion (Pt/Nafion) composite membrane were investigated by Electron Prove Micro analysis (EPMA) and X-rat Diffraction analysis (XRD) which showed distribution of Pt particle and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) a which revealed morphology of surface of Pt/Nafion composite membrane. The performance of the Pt/Nafion 112 membranes was examined in PEMFC as aself-humidifyin membranes using purpose-built equipment.

  • 리튬공기전지 및 연료전지의 고용량, 고효율 특성을 달성하기 위해서는 이들 전지를 구성하는 탄소전극물질의 pore구조가 매우 중요 하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 솔루션 플라즈마라는 새로운 공정을 이용하여 micro-pore비율이 극히 적고, meso-pore 중심으로 구성되어 있는 새로운 구조체의 합성에 성공하였고, 실제 리튬공기전지를 제작하여 방전시험을 한 결과, 기존 상업용 탄소재료보다 30~40% 이상의 우수한 고용량을 나타내는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.

Practical Challenges Associated with Catalyst Development for the Commercialization of Li-air Batteries

  • Li-air cell is an exotic type of energy storage and conversion device considered to be half battery and half fuel cell. Its successful commercialization highly depends on the timely development of key components. Among these key components, the catalyst (i.e., the core portion of the air electrode) is of critical importance and of the upmost priority. Indeed, it is expected that these catalysts will have a direct and dramatic impact on the Li-air cell's performance by reducing overpotentials, as well as by enhancing the overall capacity and cycle life of Li-air cells. Unfortunately, the technological advancement related to catalysts is sluggish at present. Based on the insights gained from this review, this sluggishness is due to challenges in both the commercialization of the catalyst, and the fundamental studies pertaining to its development. Challenges in the commercialization of the catalyst can be summarized as 1) the identification of superior materials for Li-air cell catalysts, 2) the development of fundamental, material-based assessments for potential catalyst materials, 3) the achievement of a reduction in both cost and time concerning the design of the Li-air cell catalysts. As for the challenges concerning the fundamental studies of Li-air cell catalysts, they are 1) the development of experimental techniques for determining both the nano and micro structure of catalysts, 2) the attainment of both repeatable and verifiable experimental characteristics of catalyst degradation, 3) the development of the predictive capability pertaining to the performance of the catalyst using fundamental material properties. Therefore, under the current circumstances, it is going to be an extremely daunting task to develop appropriate catalysts for the commercialization of Li-air batteries; at least within the foreseeable future. Regardless, nano materials are expected to play a crucial role in this field.

Optimization of micro structure of solid oxide fuel cell electrode (고체산화물 연료전지 변수 조사 및 전극미세구조 최적화)

  • 고체산화물연료전지는 청정에너지원으로써 기존의 발전방식을 대신할 차세대 에너지원으로 각광 받고 있다. 고체산화물 연료전지는 고온에서 작동하는 특성상 실험을 통하여 전극미세구조 및 구동조건을 최적화하는 것은 매우 어렵다. 본 연구는 전기화학식을 이용한 전산모사를 통해서 고체산화물 연료전지의 구동조건에 따른 성능 평가 및 전극의 미세구조 최적화 과정을 수행하였다. 전극 내 전달현상을 무시하고 오직 전기화학반응만을 고려한 전산모사는 단전지의 전극미세구조 및 구동조건에 따른 전지성능을 빠르게 예측할 수 있으며, 이를 기반으로 다양한 조건에서 얻은 전지 성능 데이터를 통해 전극미세구조를 최적화하였다. 개회로전압, 활성화분극, 저항분극, 물질수송손실을 표현하기 위하여 Nernst 식, Butler-Voler 식, 옴의 법칙, dusty-gas 모델을 각각 사용하였으며, 전극미세구조 및 구동조건의 변화는 물질확산계수 및 교환전류밀도를 통하여 그 영향이 전지성능에 반영된다. 온도, 압력, 주입 연료의 조성에 대한 성능평가가 수행되었으며, 1023K, 1 bar의 조건하에서 최적의 단전지 성능을 위한 기공도와 기공크기를 조사하였다. 더 향상된 단전지 성능 확보를 위해서 실험에서 쓰이는 기능층(functional layer)과 유사하게 넓은 반응 면적과 원활한 반응물 및 생성물의 이동을 보장하도록 기공도 및 기공크기를 그레이딩한 전극구조(graded-electrode)를 디자인하고 성능을 평가하였다. 그 결과 기존의 전지구조 대신에 그레이딩된 전극을 사용할 경우 50%이상 향상된 전지성능을 예측할 수 있었다.

Synthesis of Electrolyte Films for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by Sol-Gel Coating and Their Characteristics (졸-겔 코팅에 의한 저온형 고체산화물 연료저지용 전해질막의 합성 및 특성)

  • Characteristics of composite electrolytes which were prepared by coating a thin film of YSZ (yttria sta-bilized zirconia : (ZrO2)0.92 (Y2O3)0.08) on YDC (yttria doped ceria : Ce0.8Y0.2O1.9) with mixed conductivity have been investigated in order to develop the low-temperature solid oxide fuel cell. The thickness (t) of spin-coated YSZ thin films after the heat-treatment at 600$^{\circ}C$ was increased proportionally to the sol con-centrations (C) while the decrease in its thickness with the spin rate ($\omega$) could be expressed in the e-quation of ln t=9.49-0.53 ln $\omega$(0.99mol//s sol conc.) When the sol concentration and the spin rate being less than 0.99 mol/l and higher than 1000 rpm respectively reliable YSZ/YDC composite electrolytes could be obtained by multi-coating although several micro-cracks were observed in singly coated YSZ film surfaces. The dense YSZ film with a 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness was prepared by coating of 0.99 mol/l YSZ sol five-times at 2000 rpm followed by heat-treatment at 1400$^{\circ}C$ for 2h, The adhesion between YSZ film and YDC substrate was found to be very good. The open circuit voltages of H2/O2 single cell with YSZ/YDC composite electrolytes were 0.79∼0.82 V at 800$^{\circ}C$ and 0.75∼0.77V at 900$^{\circ}C$ The open circuit voltage was inversely proportioned to the thickness ratio of YSZ thin film (1$\mu\textrm{m}$) to YDC substrate(0.28-2.22 mm)

  • In this paper, a very new web-based software for renewable energy system (RES) design and economic evaluation was introduced. This solution would provide the precise RES estimation service including not only photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT) and fuel cell (FC) individually but also energy storage system (ESS) as combined forms with PV or WT. The three reasons why we ought to develop it are: First, the standardized tool suitable to the domestic environment for estimating power generation from RES facilities and economic evaluation is required. Secondly, the standardized tool is needed to spread domestic RES supply policy and to promote the new industry in the micro-grid field. The last, the reliability of economic evaluation should be enhanced more for new facilities. To achieve those aims, the weather database of one hundred locations have established and the RES facility database has also constructed. For the energy management, mathematical models for PV, WT, ESS and FC were developed. As a final phase, the analytical process to evaluate economics has performed with field data verification.

  • Two different gas diffusion layers having noticeable differences in micro-porous layer's (MPL's) crack were studied as a substrate for the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) with different binder/carbon (B/C) ratios in high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (Ht-PEMFC). As a result, the performance defined as the voltage at 0.2 A/cm2 and maximum power density from the single cells using GDEs from H23 C2 and SGL38 BC with different B/C ratios were compared. GDEs from H23 C2 showed a proportional increase of the voltage with the binder content on the other hand GDEs from SGL38 BC displayed a proportional decline of the voltage to the binder content. It was revealed that MPL crack influences the structure of catalyst layer in GDEs as well as affects the RCathode which is in close connection with the Ht-PEMFC performance.

  • The catalyst layer design is one of the most important factors to enhance the performance of PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) system. The hydrophobic and ion conductive type is studied for the MEA(Membrane Electrolyte Assembly). It is found that those have some limitations for performance enhancement when they are used separately. Thus, the dual catalyst type, a mixed model, is developed for the better MEA performance. In the meantime, the design of flow field plate is subsequently carried out in order to give more enhanced output during its operation. The conductivity of flow field plate showed better performance in the case of manufactured by the more compressed process(20MPa) than by the less compressed process(10MPa). The micro-structure of the flow field plate is examined in details using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) to analyse the effects on the different compression processes.

  • The effects of mechanical grinding(MG) treatment on the hydrogen storage of $Mg_2Ni$ alloy and $Mg_2Ni$ composite alloy($Mg_2Ni+graphite$) were investigated by pressure-composition-temperature(PCT) measurement, the micro-electrode technique of electrochemistry and etc, in which PCT was measured at high temperature(around $300[^{\circ}C]$) of gas phase and a carbon-filament micro-electrode for electrochemical evaluation was manipulated to make electrical contact with the particle in 1M KOH aqueous solution. It was found that the hydrogenation properties of $Mg_2Ni$ and graphite composite particle were greatly improved by the mechanical grinding treatment by which the $Mg_2Ni$ and graphite composite alloys could be changed into microstructure and nano-level particles. namely; the hydrogen dissociation pressure of PCT measurement was decreased from 0.55[MPa] to 0.42[MPa] and hydrogenation peaks by micro-electrode were also observed more clearly on the same sample.

  • Nondestructive evaluation(NDE) of ceramic matrix composites is essential for developing reliable ceramics for industrial applications. In the work, C-Scan image analysis has been used to characterize surface crack of SiC ceramics nondestructively. The possibility of detection of surface crack were carried out experimentally by two types of ultrasonic equipment of SDS-win and $\mu$-SDS, and three types of transducer of 25, 50 and 125 MHz. A surface micro-crack of ceramics was not detected by transducer of 25 MHz and 50 MHz. Though the focus method was detected dimly the crack by transducer of 125 MHz, the defocus method could detect the shape of diamond indenter. As a whole, the focus method and the defocus method came to the conclusion that micro crack have a good possibility for detection.
