  • It has been investigated for the temperature profile in a planar evaporator of micro-cooler subject to a uniform heat flux prior to tole initiation of boiling. The results of the analysis allow for the determination of applied power levels fur which nucleation is likely to occur only within the vapor grooves of the evaporator while maintaining subcooling in the liquid core, thereby increasing the likelihood of a successful startup. Also, limits are fecund for which additional increases in the applied heat flux do not increase the temperature difference between the vapor grooves and the wick-liquid core interface. This analysis is appropriate for the microscale evaporators of micro-cooler during a fully-flooded startup as well as starter pump designs and micro-CPLs(capillary pumped loops). The results are useful in the initial basic design of microscale heat transfer devices.

  • In this study, the distribution of $CO_2$ in an evaporator with 10 parallel micro channel aluminum tubes are experimentally investigated. Each tube has 6 circular micro channels with a diameter of 0.8mm. The tubes are heated with electric resistance wires, and the distribution of $CO_2$ into each tube is investigated by measuring the outer wall temperature. The outer wall temperature was found to be higher at the exit part of the top tube. It is thought that the $CO_2$ vapor at the upper part of the header reduces the mass flow rate of $CO_2$ into the top tube.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a micro evaporator which maximizes the heat transfer coefficient. Number of gaps, spanwise distance and streamwise distance are selected as the geometric design parameters. Mass flow rate of the refrigerant is selected as the non-geometric design parameter. Temperature at the surface of the heater is measured to valuate the heat transfer coefficient. Nine experiments are conducted using $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array. Maximum heat transfer coefficient is 640 W/$m^2K$ at the parameters of 2 gaps, 0.2 mm spanwise distance, 1.0 mm streamwise distance and 0.72 g/s mass flow rate. Among the 3 geometric parameters, the spanwise distance is the most sensitive parameter influencing the heat transfer coefficient. We conduct a second stage of experiment to increase the heat transfer coefficient by reselecting the mass flow rate. We concluded that 0.87 g/s is the optimized flow rate for an active micro cooler resulting in a heat transfer coefficient of 651 W/$m^2K$.

  • A new microcombustor configuration for a micro fuel-cell reformer integrated with a micro evaporator was studied experimentally and computationally. The present microcombustor is simply cylindrical to be easily fabricated but two-staged, expending downstream, to feasibly control ignition and stable burning. Results show that the aspect ratio of the first stage and the wall thickness of the microcombustors substantially affect ignition and thermal characteristics. For the optimized design conditions, a premixed microflame was easily ignited in the expanded second stage combustor, moved into the smaller first stage combustor, and finally stabilized therein. The measured and predicted temperature distributions across the microcombustor walls indicated that heat generated in the microcombustor is well transferred. Thus, the present microcombustor configuration could be applied to the practical micro reformers integrated with a micro evaporator for use of fuel cells.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of refrigerant-oil mixture for horizontal in-tube evaporator have been investigated experimentally. A smooth copper tube and a micro-fin tube with nominal 9.5 mm outer diameter and 1500 mm length were tested. For the pure refrigerant flow, the dependence of the axial heat transfer coefficient on quality was weak in the smooth tube, but in the micro-fin tube, the coefficients were 3 to 10 times greater as quality increases. Oil addition to pure refrigerant in the smooth tube altered the flow pattern dramatically at low mass fluxes, with a resultant enhancement of the wetting area by vigorous foaming. The heat transfer coefficients of the mixture for low and medium qualities were increased at low mass fluxes. In the micro-fin tube, however, the addition of oil deteriorates the local heat transfer performance for most of the quality range, except for low quality. The micro-fin tube consequently loses its advantage of high heat transfer performance for an oil fraction of 5%. Results are presented as plots of local heat transfer coefficient versus quality.

  • A new micro reformer system consisted of a micro reformer, a microcombustor and a micro evaporator was studied experimentally and computationally. In order to satisfy the primary requirements for designing the microcombustor integrated with a micro evaporator, i.e. stable burning in a small confinement and maximum heat transfer through a wall, the present microcombustor is simply cylindrical to be easily fabricated but two-staged (expanding downstream) to feasibly control ignition and stable burning. Results show that the aspect ratio and wall thickness of the microcombustor substantially affect ignition and thermal characteristics. For the optimized design conditions, a premixed microflame was easily ignited in the expanded second stage combustor, moved into the smaller first stage combustor, and finally stabilized therein. A micro reformer system integrated with a modified microcombustor based on the optimized design condition was fabricated. For a typical operating condition, the designed micro reformer system produced 22.3 sccm hydrogen (3.61 W in LHV) in an overall efficiency of 12%.

  • Computer simulation model for predicting more accurately the heat transfer performance of the evaporator and condenser which have significantly affected on the performance of air-conditioner has been suggested. In this model oil and micro-fin tube used in a actual unit are considered to simulate the more realistic case. The effects of oil and micro-fin tube on the performance of an air-conditioner have been investigated. It is found that the present model requires higher pressure than the existing model due to the characteristics of the tube considered. However, it turns out that the present model is very close to an actual cycle. As the amount of oil inside the tube increases, condensation heat transfer coefficient shows a linear decrease irrespective of a kind of oil, while evaporation heat transfer coefficient increases slightly in the oil with low viscosity and decreases exponentially in the oil with high viscosity. Pressure drop in both evaporator and condenser increases linearly irrespective of a kind of oil. It is also found that the effect of the variation of oil concentration on the magnitude of two-phase region is negligible.

  • In order to develop a compact evaporator, experiments that show characteristics of evaporating heat transfer and pressure drop in the helically coiled minichannel were performed in our previous research. This study was focused on the performance analysis of helically coiled heat exchangers with circular minichannels with an inner diameter=1.0 mm. The working fluid was R-22, and the properties of R-22 were estimated using the REFPROP program. Numerical simulation was performed to compare results with the experimental results of the helically coiled heat exchanger. As the heat transfer rate and pressure drop were calculated at the micro segment of the branch channels, the performance of the evaporator was evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained through the numerical simulations of the helically coiled heat exchanger. It showed good performance when the flow rate of each branch channels was suitable to heat load of air-side. The numerical simulation value agreed with experimental results within ${\pm}15%$. In this study, a numerical simulation program was developed to estimate the performance of a helically coiled evaporator. And, an optimum helically coiled minichannels evaporator was designed.

  • This study investigates two-phase cooling system of close-loop by using FC-72 and PCM(Phase change material). The cooling system consists of evaporator, cold plate, micro pump, and condenser. The heat input on the performance of evaporator is appreciated by visualizing the boiling on the evaporator. The heat performance of cooling system is investigated to determine the effects of volume fill ratio change at working fluid, pump flow rate change, and volume fill ratio change at PCM in cold plate. Experimental results show the ideal condition when the volume ratio of working fluid, the pump flowing, and the volume ratio of PCM are 60%, 6ml/min, and 60% respectively.
