Wing and secondary cracks are unique types of cracks observed in rock masses subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loading conditions. In this study, morphological features of wing and secondary cracks developed in gypsum specimens are investigated in the macro and micro scales. Along the path of wing crack, microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks coalesce with pores and show branch phenomenon. From the onset of the wing crack, multiple initiations of microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks show tortuous propagation paths and relatively constant aperture of the cracks during the propagation. It is shown that microtensile cracks propagate by splitting failure. At the micro scale, microfsults are observed in the path of the secondary cracks. Along the path of the secondary cracks, separation of grains and conglomerate grains, oblique microfaults, and irregular aperture of microfault are observed. These features show that the secondary cracks are produced in shear mode. The measured sizes of fracture process zone across the propagation direction near the tip of wing and secondary cracks range from 10$\mu{m}$ to 20$\mu{m}$ far wing cracks and from 100$\mu{m}$ to 200$\mu{m}$ for secondary cracks, respectively.
This study has been performed to investigate the stress distribution around defects that behave as stress concentrators. Besides, the effect of stress interaction effects on the initiation of primary cracks were also investigated by rotary bending fatigue tests which were performed with specimens drilled micro surface defects and the stress distribution was analyzed using Finite Element Method. In addition, the stress interaction effects around defects and cracks were investigated by comparing the results of experiments and F.E.M. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1) Area which slip and micro cracks initiated at micro surface defects is between the maximum shear stress points and this area is over than ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ from the maximum stress point along the defect edge. 2) The stress interaction effect for the small size defect is larger than that of large size defect when the interval between them is near 3) Interval which there is no shear stress interaction effect analyzed by F.E.M. is larger than that of experimental results.

Infrared (IR) optic lens can be fabricated by a single point diamond turning (SPDT) machine without subsequent polishing process. However, this machining process often leaves micro-cracks that deteriorate the surface quality. In this work, we propose an experimental design to remove micro-cracks on IR lens. The proposed design gathered data between cutting process condition and Rt surface roughness. This is of great importance because the scale of micro-cracks is a few micrometer. Rt surface roughness is suitable for analyzing maximum peak height signals of the profile. The experimental results indicate that feed per revolution variable is one of the most dominant variable, affecting the generation micro-cracks on IR lens surfaces.

Various techniques to measure fracture toughness which is an important parameter to predict fracture behavious of structural materials have been reported. Among these mathods, this paper describes the micro-Vickers indentation crack method to estimate the fracture toughness of some WC-Co composites. Two indentation crack patterns (such as radial-median cracks (orhalf-penny cracks) and Palmqvist cracks generated during indentation) are referred precisely. The fracture toughness of WC-4.7wt%Co, WC-6wr%Co and WE-9wr%Co composites were estimated by using some equations given by Shetty et al., Nihara et al. in this study. We show the reliability of indentation method by comparing the results with those from literatures. The appropriate equation to estimate the fracture toughness in the case of WC-Co composite is given. In addition, some technical informations in terms of the crack length by indentation in estimating the existence of the surface residual stress that prevents to obtain an accurate fracture toughness are presented.
Silicon wafer is one of main materials in solar cell. Micro-cracks in silicon wafer are one of reasons to decrease efficiency of energy transformation. They couldn't be observed by human eye. Also, their shape is not only various but also complicated. Accordingly, their shape classification is absolutely needed for manufacturing process quality and its feedback. The performance of typical classification techniques which is principal component analysis(PCA), neural network, fusion model to integrate PCA with neural network, and support vector machine(SVM), are evaluated using pattern features of micro-cracks. As a result, it has been confirmed that the SVM gives good results in micro-crack classification.
A crack model for the fracture in concrete based on meshless method is proposed in this paper. The cracks in concrete are classified into micro-cracks or macro-cracks respectively according to their widths, and different numerical approaches are adopted for them. The micro-cracks are represented with smeared crack approach whilst the macro-cracks are represented with discrete cracks that are made up with additional nodes and boundaries. The widely used meshless method, Element-free Galerkin method, is adopted instead of finite element method to model the concrete, so that the discrete crack approach is easier to be implemented with the convenience of arranging node distribution in the meshless method. Rotating-Crack-Model is proved to be preferred over Fixed-Crack-Model for the smeared cracks of this composite crack model due to its better performance on mesh bias. Numerical examples show that this composite crack model can take advantage of the positive characteristics in the smeared and discrete approaches, and overcome some of their disadvantages.

Quantitative analysis have been carried out on the micro-cracks on the surface and into the depth of unnotched smooth mild steel specimen under cyclic stains by rotating bending fatigue tests. Some of the results are; (1) Cracks initiate at the early stage of fatigue life N$_{I}$/ N$_{f}$=10 to 20%, and propagate during the rest of fatigue life. (2) Coalescence of highly crowded small fatigue cracks of random distribution seems to induce the final fracture at higher stress level. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (3) The curves of crack initiation and the equal crack length on the graph of stress versus number of cycles are parallel to the S-N curve. (4) The distributions of micro-surface crack length and depth show the composite Weibull distributions which are approximated to two straight lines separated by the value of transient region between stage I and stage II crack.k.k.

Irregular shapes and growth behavior of surface micro-crack showed very complex and nonlinear propeties and many investigators have performed theoretical analysesand experiments on them to characterize fatigue strength. They had difficulties in estimating fatigue life due to random distribution, growth and coalescence of surface micro-cracks. The straightness of crack growth along intergranular and transgranular was prevented from irregular microstructure and precipitates. Euclid geometry can't quantify shape of surface micro-crack but ftractal geometry can. Therefore, it is suggested that average fractal dimension of surface micro-cracks is able to estimate fatigue life but fractal dimension of maximum surface micro-crack is not in Al 2024-T3 alloy.

In this paper, the classification rate of micro-cracks in silicon wafers was improved using a SVM. In case I, we investigated how feature data of micro-cracks and SVM parameters affect a classification rate. As a result, weighting vector and bias did not affect the classification rate, which was improved in case of high cost and sigmoid kernel function. Case II was performed using a more high quality image than that in case I. It was identified that learning data and input data had a large effect on the classification rate. Finally, images from cases I and II and another illumination system were used in case III. In spite of different condition images, good classification rates was achieved. Critical points for micro-crack classification improvement are SVM parameters, kernel function, clustered feature data, and experimental conditions. In the future, excellent results could be obtained through SVM parameter tuning and clustered feature data.
The micro-structural changes, strength characteristics, and micro-fractural behaviors at the joint interface between a Sn-4.0wt%Ag-0.5wt%Cu solder ball and UBM treated by isothermal aging are reported. From the reflow process for the joint interface, a small amount of intermetallic compound was formed. With an increase in the isothermal aging time, the type and amount of the intermetallic compound changed. The interface without an isothermal treatment showed a ductile fracture. However, with an increase in the aging time, a brittle fracture occurred on the interface due mainly to the increase in the size of the intermetallic compounds and voids. As a result, a drastic degradation in the shear strength was observed. From a microshear test by a scanning electron microscope, the generation of micro-cracks was initiated from the voids at the joint interface. They propagated along the same interface, resulting in coalescence with neighboring cracks into larger cracks. With an increase in the aging time, the generation of the micro-structural cracks was enhanced and the degree of propagation also accelerated.
