  • This study is focused on an integrated numerical modeling enabling one to investigate the dynamic behavior and failure of 2-D textile composite and 3-D orthogonal woven composite structures weakened by micro-cracks and subjected to an impact load. The integrated numerical modeling is based on: I) determination of governing equations via a three-level hierarchy: micro-mechanical unit cell analysis, layer-wise analysis accounting for transverse strains and stresses, and structural analysis based on anisotropic plate layers, II) development of an efficient computational approach enabling one to perform transient response analyses of 2-D plain woven and 3-D orthogonal woven composite structures featuring the matrix cracking and exposed to time-dependent loads, III) determination of the structural characteristics of the textile-layered composites and their degraded features under various geometrical yarn shapes, and finally, IV) assessment of the implications of stiffness degradation on dynamic response to impact loads.

  • In this study, we investigated that the resistance switching characteristics of Nb-doped HfO2 films with increasing Nb doping concentration. The Nb-doped HfO2 based ReRAM devices with a TiN/Nb-doped HfO2/Pt/Ti/SiO2 were fabricated on Si substrates. The Nb-doped HfO2 films were deposited by reactive dc magnetron co-sputtering at $300^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial ratio of 60% (Ar: 16sccm, O2: 24sccm). Microstructure of Nb-doped HfO2 films and atomic concentration were investigated by XRD, TEM, and XPS, respectively. The Nb-doped HfO2 films showed set/reset resistance switching behavior at various Nb doping concentrations. The process voltage of forming/set is decreased and whereas the initial current level is increased in doped HfO2 films. However, the switching properties of Nb-doped HfO2 were changed above the specific doping concentration of Nb. The change of resistance switching behavior depending on doping concentration was discussed in terms of concentration of non-lattice oxygen and micro-structure of Nb-doped HfO2.

  • A $CO_2$ laser overlay was conducted by using a Fe-based powder on the AC2B aluminum substrate. Cracks and intermetallic compounds (IMC) were observed inconsistently along the interface between the overlay and post-molten layer. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detected some Fe-rich IMC ($Fe_3Al$, FeAl) as well as the brittle Al-rich IMC ($Fe_2Al_5,\;FeAl_3$). Micro vickers hardness proved the formation of Al-rich IMC ($FeAl_3$) along the interface by showing HV0.1 $800{\sim}900$. Furthermore, nano indentation was successfully applied to investigate the behavior of IMC more precisely than the micro vickers hardness.

  • The distribution of economic activity over a mutually exclusive and exhaustive categorical industry-region matrix is modeled as a composition of two random components: the probability-like share distribution of jobs and the dynamic evolution of absolute aggregates. The former describes the individual activity location choice by comparing the predicted profitability of the current industry-region pair against that of all other alternatives based on the available information on industry-specific, region specific, or activity specific attributes. The latter describes the time evolution of macro-level aggregates using a dynamic reduced from model. With the seperation of micro choice behavior and macro dynamic aggregate constraint, the usual independence and identicality assumptions become consistent with the activity share distribution, hence multi-regional industrial migration can be represented by a set of probability evolution equations in a conservative Markovian from. We call this a Micro-Macro Composition Approach since the product of the aggregate prediction and the predicted activity share distribution gives the predicted activity distribution gives the predicted activity distribution which explicitly considers the underlying individual choice behavior. The model can be applied to interesting practical problems such as the plant location choice of multinational enterprise, the government industrial ploicy to attract international firms, and the optimal tax-transfer mix to influence activity location choice. We consider the latter as an example.

  • The effect of particle sizes on the aerosol deposition (AD) of Cu films is investigated in order to understand the deposition behaviors of metal powder during the AD process. The Cu coatings fabricated by using $2{\mu}m$ Cu powders had a dense microstructure, a high deposition rate ($1.6{\pm}0.2{\mu}m/min$), and low resistance ($9.42{\pm}0.4{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) compared to that from using Cu powder with a particle size greater than $5{\mu}m$. Also, from estimating the internal micro-strain of Cu films, the Cu coatings fabricated by using $2{\mu}m$ Cu particles exhibited a high micro-strain value of $3.307{\times}10^{-3}$. On the other hand, the strain of Cu coatings fabricated with $5{\mu}m$ particles was decreased to $2.76{\times}10^{-3}$. These results seem to show that the impacted Cu particles are compressed and flattened by shock waves, and that their bonding is associated with the high internal micro-strain caused by plastic deformation.

  • This paper investigated generation behavior of micro-arcs and growth behavior of PEO films on the AA7050 disc specimen in 0.1 M NaAlO2 solution under the application of 1200 Hz anodic pulse current. Morphologies, thickness and surface roughness of PEO films were examined at the edge part and central part separately. Micro-arcs were generated first at the edge part and then moved towards the central part with PEO treatment time, indicating lateral growth of PEO films. The lateral growth resulted in uniform PEO thickness of about 5 ㎛ and surface roughness of about 0.5 ㎛. Moving of the arcs from the edge towards the central part appeared only one time and large size arcs were generated at the edge before completing the central part with small size micro-arcs. This suggests that vertical growth starts before completing the lateral growth. Large size arcs generated at the edge resulted in the formation of relatively large size pores within the PEO films on the AA7050 disc specimen.

  • This study presents a methodology to reproduce the mechanical behavior of isotropic or transversely isotropic rock using the polygonal grain-based distinct element model. A numerical technique to monitor the evolution of micro-cracks during the simulation was developed in the present study, which enabled us to examine the contribution of tensile cracking and shear cracking to the progressive process of the failure. The numerical results demonstrated good agreement with general observations from rock specimens in terms of the behavior and the evolution of micro-cracks, suggesting the capability of the model to represent the mechanical behavior of rock. We also carried out a parametric study as a fundamental work to examine the relationships between the microscopic properties of the constituents and the macroscopic behavior of the model. Depending on the micro-properties, the model exhibited a variety of responses to the external load in terms of the strength and deformation characteristics. In addition, a numerical technique to reproduce the transversely isotropic rock was suggested and applied to Asan gneiss from Korea. The behavior of the numerical model was in good agreement with the results obtained in the laboratory-scale experiments of the rock.

  • In this study, a complex behavior connector is proposed to overcome the problems that may occur when small pile pipe and micro pile is used as a friction pile concept in the lower foundation of an oil sand plant where a piloti foundation is used. The individual settlement and heaving of piles were connected in one group to allow the composite behavior. This study performed to analyze the load carrying capacity to identify a complex behavior. In addition, the shape of the composite behavior connector was examined to apply the advantages of pile-group and piled raft foundations to oil sand plants. A scale model was constructed to measure the behavior of the load. The stability and weakness of the device were selected to determine the shape of the connector using the scale model testing.

  • In this study, the change of optical characteristics was studied according to the micro optical pattern provided by photo lithography followed by thermal reflow process. The shape and luminance variation with micro pattern was evaluated by SEM and spectrometers. Also, we analyzed the luminance characteristics using the 3D-optical simulation (Optis works) program. As a result, we found that the radius of curvature(R) in micro pattern is decreased up to 77%($150^{\circ}C$) compared to the radius of curvature at the condition $100^{\circ}C$, which is caused by efficient reflow of organic material without chemical changes. The highest enhancement of brightness with optimum micro pattern was obtained at the condition of $120^{\circ}C$ reflow process. The brightness gain with optical micro patterns is more than 15% at the condition of R=16.95 um, ${\Theta}=77.14^{\circ}$ compared to original optical source. The results of light simulation with various radius of curvature and side angle of pattern shows the similar result of experiment evaluation of light behavior on optical micro patterns. It is regarded that the more effect on light enhancement was contributed by side angle which is effective factor on light reflection, rather than the curvature of micro-patterns.

  • Recent electronic equipment becomes smaller, more functional, and more complex. According to these trends, LTCC(low temperature co-fired ceramic) has been emerged as a promising technology in packaging industry. It consists of multi-layer ceramic sheet, and the circuit has 3D structure. In this technology via hole formation plays an important role because it provides an electric path for the packaging interconnection network. Therefore via hole quality is very important for ensuring performance of LTCC product. Via holes are formed on the green sheet that consists of ceramic(before sintering) layer and PET(polyethylene Terephthalate) one. In this paper we found the correlation between hole quality and process condition such as ceramic thickness, and tool size. The shear behavior of double layer sheet by micro hole punching which is different from that of single layer one was also discussed.
