  • The paper reports on a new type of combinatorial chaotic and serpentine micromixer. Such a new and novel micromixer is simple to fabricate and easy to use. The micromixer is characterized and visualized with the help of the Micro-LIF technique. The new micromixer will e further applied to lab-on-chip device. The mixing capabilities of this mixer is about 30-33%.

  • This paper offer the characteristics for the detection and classification of biological and non-biological aerosol particles in the air by using laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) based Bio-aerosol Detection System (BDS). The BDS is mainly consist of an optical chamber, in-outlet nozzle system, 405 nm diode laser, an avalanche photo detector (APD) for scattering signal and photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for fluorescence signals in two different wavelength range ; F1, 510-600 nm and F2, 435-470 nm. The detection characteristics, especially ratio of fluorescence signal intensity were examined using well-known components : polystylene latex (PSL), fluorescence PSL, $2{\mu}m$ of SiO2 micro sphere, dried yeast, NADH, ovalbumin, fungicide powder and standard dust. The results indicated that the 405 nm diode laser-based LIF instrument can be a useful bio-aerosol detection system for unexpected biological threaten alter in real-time to apply for dual-use technology in military and civilian fields.

  • In this paper, a technique of simultaneously measuring the velocity and the temperature in micro-scale flow is proposed. This method uses particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) for measuring the velocity and laser induced fluorescence (LIE) for measuring the temperature. To measure the accurate velocity and temperature, images for PTV and for LIE are separated by using two light sources and a shutter which is synchronized with a camera. By using only one camera, measurement system can be simplified and the error from complicate optical system can be minimized. Error analyses regarding the concentrations of fluorescent dye and particle and the light source fluctuation are also conducted. It is found that the error of the temperature and the velocity highly depends on the concentration of fluorescent particles which are used for PTV. This technique is applied to the simultaneous measurement of the velocity and the temperature in the electrokinetic flow. It is found that the velocity and temperature vary with the electric field strength and the concentration of electrolyte.

  • The 14th International Symposium on Flow Visualization (ISFV14) was held at Daegu (Korea), June 21-24, 2010. The number of participants was 304 from 17 countries. The number of papers presentated was 243 from 19 countries. Two special lectures and four invited lectures, 48 paper sessions, and one poster session were opened in five and in a lobby for four days. Special events such as awarding "the Asanuma Award" and "the Leonardo Da Vinci Award" to the prominent contributors were also held. Photo and Movie Awards were given to three scientists for the excellences in their photos and movies. Among 48 sessions 5 sessions were on Biological Flows and on Micro/Nano Fluidics, which were the largest session number. 4 sessions were held on Compressible and Sonic Flows, and on PIV/PTV. 3 sessions were held on Swirl Flows, Image Processing, and on Industrial Applications. Other sessions on LIF, Wake and Vortex Flows, Physiological Flows, Environment Flows, Measurements Techniques, and on Reacting Flows.

  • In this paper it was described on the intereference effect of uranium to analyze Cs in $UO_2$ by Electron Probe Micro Analysis(EPMA) and the beam stability of Cs $L_{\alpha}$ X-ray intensity for some Cs compounds. According to the experimental results, the CsI showed the highest $L_{\alpha}$ X-ray intensity among the tested Cs compounds at the experimental condition; 15~30 kV of accelerating voltage and PET, LiF crystal. When 100 nA of beam current was applied to Cs compounds, Cs $L_{\alpha}$ X-ray intensity was continuously decreased with increasing time. The decreasing rate of Cs $L_{\alpha}$ X-ray intensity was directly proportional to the applied beam current and accelerating voltage but inversely proportional to the applied beam size. It was found that uranium interference can be prevented by using Cs $L_{\alpha}$ X-ray wavelength of Lif crytal for Cs analysis in $UO_2$ by EPMA.
