Microdroplet deposition in a micro-groove is studied numerically. The droplet shape is determined by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating a sharp-interface modeling technique for accurately enforcing the matching conditions at the liquid-gas interface and the no-slip and contact angle conditions at an immersed solid surface. The computations are carried out to investigate the droplet behavior derived by the interfacial characteristics between the liquid-gas-solid phases. The effects of contact angle, impact velocity and groove geometry on droplet deposition in a micro-groove are quantified.

A micro-water-nozzle, as one of a cooling means of micro-electronic devices, has been proposed and investigated. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle and effect of applied voltage on the meniscus formation and deformation and ejection processes of de-ionized water on the micro-water-nozzle tip have been investigated. The water ejection processes, such as a drop formation, a drop deformation, a dripping, a cone jet, and an atomization, were taken place on the micro-water-nozzle tip by the electrohydrodynamic forces acted by the DC and AC high voltages applied on the meniscus of the micro-water-nozzle tip. The I-V characteristics of the micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system were different from that of the same metal-point electrode system, due to the meniscus formation and water droplet ejection at the nozzle tip. The positive and negative DC and AC high voltages showed the water droplets ejection, the ejection rates of 1.8, 1.5 and 1.2 g/h respectively, which, however, showed that the proposed micro-water-nozzle-to-plate electrode system could be used as one of an effective pumping means.
The present study conducts experimental investigation on spreading and deposition characteristics of a $4.3{\mu}l$ de-ionized (DI) water droplet impacting upon aluminum (Al 6061) flat and textured surfaces. The micro-textured surface consisted the micro-hole arrays (hole diameter: $125{\mu}m$, hole depth: $125{\mu}m$) fabricated by the conventional micro-computer numerical control (${\mu}$-CNC) milling machine process. We examined the surface effect of texture area fraction ${\varphi}_s$ ranging from 0 to 0.57 and impact velocity of droplet ranging from 0.40 m/s to 1.45 m/s on spreading and deposition characteristics from captured images. We used a high-speed camera to capture sequential images for investigate spreading characteristics and the image sensor to capture image of final equilibrium deposition droplet for analyze spreading diameter and contact angle. We found that the deposition droplet on textured surfaces have different wetting states. When the impact velocity is low, the non-wetting state partially exists, whereas over 0.64 m/s of impact velocity, totally wetting state is more prominent due to the increase kinetic energy of impinging droplet.

The water-in-fuel droplets were applied to investigate the effect of mixing ratio between water and decane, ambient temperature, droplet size and spacing between droplets on ignition and micro-explosion in a heated chamber with high temperature. The ignition temperature of droplet was found lower as the droplet size was increased and the contents of water was decreased. The life time of droplet, however, decreases as the contents of water increases due to the micro-explosion. The occurrence of micro-explosion also increases as the size of droplets and the ambient temperature increase. The flame spread speed gets faster as the contents of water and the number of suspender decreases.
The present study investigated experimentally the spreading characteristics of a single liquid impinging on the inclined micro-textured aluminum (Al 6061) surfaces manufactured by using a micro computerized numerical control (${\mu}$-CNC) milling machine. The textured surfaces were composed of patterned micro-holes (diameter of $125\;{\mu}m$ and depth of $125\;{\mu}m$). In our experiment, the de-ionized (DI) water droplet of $4.3\;{\mu}l$ was impinged normally on the non-textured and textured surfaces at two different Weber numbers, and the droplet impinged on the inclined surfaces with different angles. A high speed camera was used to capture sequential digital images for measurement of the maximum spreading distance. It was found that for the textured surface, the measured apparent equilibrium contact angle (ECA) increased up to $105.8^{\circ}$, higher than the measured ECA of $87.6^{\circ}$ for the non-textured (bare) surface. In addition, it is conjectured that the spreading distance decreased because of a liquid penetration during droplet spreading through the holes, the increase in hydrophobicity, and viscous dissipation during impact process.
The influences of sensitization on localized corrosion resistance of 304 stainless steel, were investigated, using micro-dropletcell techniques. Micro-droplet cell allows one to align the micro-electrode to the desired spot of the working electrode and measure directly local current with the potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization and a.c. impedance. Micro-electrochemical tests were carried out inside of the grain and on grain boundaries separately. It was found that sensitization decreased the pitting potential, increasing corrosion current density around grain boundaries. Galvanic current density was also measured between grain and grain boundaries.
This study presents the dynamic characteristics of an impinging droplet on hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces with various texture area fractions. The flat surface was fabricated by using the drilling technique to make micro-meter hole-patterned surfaces, which shows hydrophobic textured surfaces. Moreover, the hydrophilic textured surfaces were manufactured by anodizing technique on the micro-meter hole-patterned surfaces to generate multi-layer surfaces. Impinging droplet experiments were conducted for various hole-patterned surfaces, with changing impact velocity and texture area fractions. It is observed that an anodizing technique increases wettability by decrease in hole diameter on the textured surfaces. However, micro-drilled surfaces decreases wettability because the hole diameter was so large that air can be trapped under the holes. In addition, the maximum spreading diameter decreases with the texture area fraction for the micro-drilled surfaces because of decrease in wettability.

Study of a micro chemical plant consisted with droplet generation, digital sorting and separation was conducted. The droplet generation was quantitatively characterized. The digital sorting brought effective reaction by shortening the droplet size and the pitch of droplet generation simultaneously. To prevent the unfavorable higher order reaction, perfect separation of droplets was visualized.
Combustion characteristics of a 1-butanol gel fuel were studied in atmospheric pressure condition. The butanol gel fuel was manufactured by adding hydroxypropyl-methyl cellulose (HPMC) as a gellant and the effect of the gellant concentration was observed. The combustion process of a single butanol gel droplet was divided into 3 stages including droplet heating, microexplosion, and gellant combustion. The flame was distorted compared to butanol + water mixture because of micro-explosion during the combustion. Increase of gellant concentration delayed the droplet ignition, but the combustion rate was improved due to the mass ejection during the micro-explosion.
Quantifying the solute composition of a cloud droplet (or a whole droplet) is an important task for understanding formation processes and heating/cooling rates. In this study, a combination of droplet fixation and SR-XRF microprobe analysis was used to visualize and quantify elements in a micro-scale droplet. In this study, we report the preliminary outcome of this experiment. A spherical micro-scale droplet was successfully solidified through exposure to ${\alpha}$-cyano-acrylate vapor without affecting its size or shape. An X-ray microprobe system equipped at the beam line 37XU of Super Photon ring 8 GeV (SPring-8) was applied to visualize and quantify the elemental composition in an individual micro-scale droplet. It was possible to reconstruct 2D elemental maps for the K and Cl contained in a microdroplet that was dispensed from the 10-ppm KCl standard solution. Multi-elemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Further experiments to determine quantitative measures of elemental mass in individual droplets and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (i.e., 3D elemental distribution) are planned for the future.
