The present study investigated the photodegradation of synthetic organic dye; violet-3B, without and with the addition of C-N-codoped TiO2 catalyst using a visible halogen-lamp as a light source. The catalyst was synthesized by using a peroxo sol-gel method with free-organic solvent. The effects of initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, and pH solution on the photodegradation of violet-3B were examined. The efficiency of the photodegradation process for violet-3B dye was higher at neutral to less acidic pH. The kinetics reaction rate of photodegradation of violet-3B dye with the addition of C-N-codoped TiO2 followed pseudo-first order kinetics represented by the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and increasing the initial concentration of dyes decreased rate constants of photodegradation. Photodegradation of 5 mg L-1 violet-3B dye achieved 96% color removal within 240 min of irradiation in the presence of C-N-codoped TiO2 catalyst, and approximately 44% TOC was removed as a result of the mineralization.
Modified dip-coating method 8.3 times shorten in solution volume-coated and 83.3 times in coating time than existing dip-coating method. Coating weight increased nearly 2~3 times. So modified dip-coating method is evaluated that it is economic and has a efficiency. When we make an experiment in coated $LaCoO_3$ on ceramic monolith in modified dip-coating method which use 2 coating applications with relative viscosity $0.006202kg{\cdot}m/sec$, it showed a superior reaction at 88.56mg per ceramic unit gram in NO-CO reaction(optimum coating amount). When we make an experiment in the same size of ceramic filter cell with different conditions 100, 200cell per square inch, the result in low temperature($200^{\circ}C{\sim}350^{\circ}C$), 200cell3 per square inch is 6~23% higher in NO reduction and 11% in CO oxidation than 100cell per square inch. It is because the more the number of cells in the ceramic filter increase, the more catalytic surface area is expanded.

This study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in the Suwon and Taean areas. Rainwater was collected during the farming seasons of 2002 and 2003. The number of samples collected in Suwon and Taean were 69 and 71, respectively. These were analyzed for chemical composition. The pH of samples collected in April was higher than those collected after June. The most common range of rainwater pH was 5.0-5.6 in Suwon and 4.5-5.0 in Taean during investigation periods. The neutralization capacity of rainwater acidity by $Ca^{2+}$ and N $H_4$$^{+}$ was decreased during the rainy season. The EC of rainwater was lower during the rainy season. Cation concentrations in rainwater were N $H_4$$^{+}$ > $H^{+}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $K^{+}$ in Suwon and $Ca^{2+}$ > N $H_4$$^{+}$ > $H^{+}$ > $K^{+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ in Taean. In the case of anion, the order was sol > N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ > C $I^{[-10]}$ in Suwon and S $O_4$$^{2-}$ > C $I^{[-10]}$ > N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ in Taean. The mean values of sulfate in rainwater were 130 $\mu$eq $L^{-1}$ in Suwon and 117 $\mu$eq $L^{-1}$ in Taean. The ratio of non-sea salt sulfate to sulfate (nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ > S $O_4$$^{2-}$) was 89% and 88%. This implies that the major origin of sulfate in rainwater might be anthropogenic.ht be anthropogenic..
Fructose-l, 6-diphosphate as an additive to cold crystalloid cardioplegia [St. Thomas sol.] was studied prospectively in 60 patients undergoing open heart surgery from January 1, 1991, to June 30, 1991. Thirty patients received cardioplegia with FDP[group I ] and 30 patients received cardioplegia without FDP [group II ]. There were no differences between two groups pre-operatively with regard to age, heart disease, cross-clamp time, cardiac enzymes, or hemodynamic measurements [p>0.05]. Cardiopulmonary bypass was established using ascending aorta and vena cava cannulation employing moderate systemic hypothermia [30oC nasopharyngeal temperature] and hemodilution All patients received cardioplegia through the aortic root at aortic root pressure of 80mm Hg. The composition of the cardioplegic solution and its delivery were identical in both groups except for the addition of FDP[1.5 mg/mL] in group I. The cardioplegic infusate consisted of St. Thomas Hospital solution. The initial dose was infused through the aortic root. Topical myocardial cooling with saline slush was employed in all patients. Recorded operative data were cardiopulmonary bypass and cross-clamp times, amount of cardioplegic infusate. Blood samples for assessment of lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], creatine kinase [CK] and transaminases [GOT, GPT] were obtained before and at 1,2,3,7th postoperative period. Better myocardial protection effect was noted in group I than group II with respect to the % change of cardiac enzymes, although the differences were not significant. We conclude that FDP is a safe additive to crystalloid cardioplegia and may be beneficial in open heart surgery patients.
The objectives of this study are to manufacture an efficient $TiO_2$, photocatalyst and to delineate optimum operational parameters for TCE (trichloroethylene) degradation in a photocatalytic oxidative reactor. The $TiO_2$ photocatalyst irradiated by 365 nm UV light is expected to increase degradation of TCE in solution by a series of photocatalytic oxidations in the reactor. A new membrane $TiO_2$ photocatalyst wns eventually developed by coating a mixture of Davan-C(0.24 wt%) and PVA(0.16 wt%) on the surface of slips using the slip-casting method. Results show that increase in the number of coating of $TiO_2$ sol on surface of photocatalysts and in the surface thickness improved the endurance and photocatalysts, but these physical modifications caused significant decrease in the overall degradation efficiency of TCE. Pre-aeration or recirculation of the influents to the reactors containing TCE increased degradation efficiency of TCE. The optimum operational conditions far the surface area of photocatalysts and UV light intensity appeared to be $1.47\;mL/cm^2$ and $225\;W/cm^2{\times}100$, respectively, in the reactor. Based on the overall experimental results, the photocatalytic oxidation of TCE with the new membrane $TiO_2$ photocatalyst is found to be very effective under the operational conditions delineated in this study.
In previous studies we have demonstrated that several individual ginsenosides such as Rc, Rd, Re and Ri relieves formalin-induced pain following systemic treatment. But it is unknown where these single ginsenosides induce antinociception. We investigated the antinoiceptive effect of four individual ginsenosides on formalin-induced pain after intrathecal (i.t.), intracereventricular (i.c.v.), or subcutaneous (s.c.) administration using mice. We found that ginsenoside Rc, Rd, and Re except Rf attenuated both acute and tonic phase of pain. Ginsenoside Rf attenuated only tonic phase of pain after i.t. administration. The ED$\_$50/ was 1.0 (0.55∼l.75 mg/kg) for Rc, 1.15 (0.6∼2.25 mg/kg) for Rd, and 8.9 (3.9∼20.5 mg/kg) for Re in acute phase of pain. The ED$\_$50/ was 0.3 (0.1∼0.85 mg/kg) for Rc, 0.6 (0.35∼l.1 mg/kg) for Rd, 2.45 (1.25∼4.65 mg/kg) for Re, and 1.9 (1.5∼4.25 mg/kg) for Rf in tonic phase of pain. We also found that ginsenoside Rc, Rd, Re, and Rf after i.c.v. administration attenuated both acute and tonic phase of pain. The ED5o for acute phase of pain was 0.9 (0.55∼l.4mg/kg) for Rc, 0.9 (0.45∼1.7 mg/kg) for Rd, 0.93 (0.5∼l .75 mg/kg) for Re, and 1.85 (0.95∼3.5 mg/kg) for Rf. The ED$\_$50/ for tonic phase of pain was 0.7 (0.45∼1.05 mg/kg) for Rc,1.25 (0.7∼2.2 mg/kg) for Rd, 0.85 (0.45∼1.6 mg/kg) for Re, and 0.8 (0.4∼1.45 mg/kg) for Rf. Thus, the order of the analgesic potency was Rc$\geq$Rd>Re>Rf in both i.t. and i.c.v. administration routes. However, s.c. pretreatment of four ginsenosides did not reduce formalin-induced pain. These results suggest that analgesic effect of ginsenosides is achieved through spinal or supraspinal site(s) in formalin test.
[Purpose] Doxorubicin (DOX) is a potent anti-cancer drug that appears to have severe myotoxicity due to accumulation. The skeletal muscle has a regeneration capacity through satellite cell activation when exposed to extracellular stimulus or damage. Endurance exercise (EXE) is a therapeutic strategy that improves pathological features and contributes to muscle homeostasis. Thus, this study investigated the effect of EXE training in mitigating chronic DOX-induced myotoxicity. [Methods] Male C57BL/6J mice were housed and allowed to acclimatize with free access to food and water. All the mice were randomly divided into four groups: sedentary control (CON, n=9), exercise training (EXE, n=9), doxorubicin treatment (DOX, n=9), doxorubicin treatment and exercise training (DOX+EXE, n=9) groups. The animals were intraperitoneally injected with 5 mg/kg/week of DOX treatment for 4 weeks, and EXE training was initiated for treadmill adaptation for 1 week and then performed for 4 weeks. Both sides of the soleus (SOL) muscle tissues were dissected and weighed after 24 hours of the last training sessions. [Results] DOX chemotherapy induced an abnormal myofiber's phenotype and transition of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms. The paired box 7 (PAX7) and myoblast determination protein 1 (MYOD) protein levels were triggered by DOX, while no alterations were shown for the myogenin (MYOG). DOX remarkably impaired the a-actinin (ACTN) protein, but the EXE training seems to repair it. DOX-induced myotoxicity stimulated the expression of the forkhead box O3 (FOXO3a) protein, which was accurately controlled and adjusted by the EXE training. However, the FOXO3a-mediated downstream markers were not associated with DOX and EXE. [Conclusion] EXE postconditioning provides protective effects against chronic DOX-induced myotoxicity, and should be recommended to alleviate cancer chemotherapy-induced late-onset myotoxicity.
The protective effect of'ischemic preconditioning'on ischemid-reperfusion injury of heart has been reported in various animal species. but without known mechAnism in detail, In An attempt to investigate the cardioprotective mechanism of ischemic preconditioning, we examined the effects of nitric oxide(UO) synthesis in preconditioned heart of rat The isolated hearts perfused by Langendorfr's method were ex- posed to 30min global ischemia followed by 30min reperfusion with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit(K-H) sol- ution. Ischemic preconditioning was performed with three episodes of Sm n ischemia and Smin repeyfusion before the induction of prolong ischemia(30min)-reperfusion(30min). Ischemic preconditioning prevented the depression of cardiac function(left ventricular pressure .K heart rate) observed in the ischemia- reperfusion hearts and reduced the release of lactate dehydrogenase during the reperfusion period. On electromicroscopic pictures, myocardial ultrastructures wore relatively well preserved in isthemic preconditioned hearts. N6_nitro-L-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME) an inhibitor of L-arginine citric oxide pathway, was infused at a rate O.Smllmin In a dose of 10mg kg-1 before the initial ischemic preconditioning. neither the protection of cardiac function nor the reduction of LDH releAse in ischemic preconditioning hearts was altered in the presence of added L-NAME On ultrastructural finding, the preservation of morphology in ischemic preconditioning heart was not change by the pretreatment of L-UAME. The failure of the WO synthesis inhibitor to reduce t e effect of ischemic preconditioning may be related to be species specific in that NO may allot be the trigger for ischemic preconditioning in rats.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mugwort extracts on the blood ethanol concentration, liver function and low level of cadmuim(Cd) in rats. The effects of mugwort extracts on the blood ethanol concentration was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats (10 weeks old) administered p.o. with 25% ethanol (5g/1kg body weight) and then injected with mugwort extracts (at the 2% levels of daily feed consumption compared with the concentration of catechins level in mugwort extracts) in caudal vein. SD rats were divided into five groups : control group (CON-E, only ethanol and 0.85% saline sol'n treated instead of each extracts), water extracts of mugwort treated to the control (MDW-E), ethanol extracts of mugwort treated to the control (POH-E). And then rat plasma of each time (0hr, 1hr, 2hr, 3hr) was investigated ethanol concentration by gas chromatography. Another rats were measured at the time of 0 and 5hr for the test of GOD(Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase) and GPT(Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase). Components of each extracts were analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography. The effects of mugwort extracts on the liver function were studied in culture of rat hepatocyte composed of three groups : Control group and two groups treated with each extracts (1% & 2% MDW, 1% & 2% MOH). Condition of rat hepatocytes cultured for 36hr at $37^{\circ}C$(5% $CO_2$ incubator), number of cells, GOT and GPT activity were investigated. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Catechins level of mugwort extracts was $8{\sim}10mg/100g(MDW)$, $3{\sim}4mg/100g(MOH)$ 2. The contents of (-)-Epigallocatechin was high in MDW 3. The effects of mugwort extracts on the blood ethanol concentration were as follows; 1) The order in ethanol degradation efficiency was MDW-E > MOH-E > CON-E. 2) Ethanol concentration significantly decreased (p<0.05) in MDW-E and MOH-E. 4. The effects of mugwort extracts on the liver function were as follows; (rat hepatocytes cultured for 36hr at $37^{\circ}C$) 1) Cells condition of MDW-L was better than other groups. 2) The order in number of cells (rat hepatocytes) was 2% MDW-L >1% MDW-L >1% MOH-L > Con-L > 2% MOH-L 5. Cd treatment increased concentrations of hepatic GSH level, and decreased GOT activity in plasma. Therefore, this results suggest that the effects of mugwort extracts may an important rols in degradation ethanol and recovery liver function in body. Also, Mugwort extracts may modify the toxicities of Cd in Cd-treated rats and play an important roles in preventing the liver from various toxicants including Cd in Cd treated rats.
