  • This paper proposes a systematic design methodology for the Takagi-Sugeno(TS) model based fuzzy control system with guaranteed stability and additional constraints on the closed-loop pole location. These combined two objectives are formulated as a system of LMIs(Linear Matrix Inequalities). Since LMIs intrinsically reflect constraints, they tend to offer more flexibility for combining various constraints on the closed-loop system. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed design methodology it is applied to the requlation problem of a nonlinear magnetic bearing system. Simulation results show that the proposed LMI-based design methodology yields not only maximized stability boundary but also the desired transient responses.

  • Augmented reality based on projection, called "Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR)", is a new technology that can produce immersive contents by overlapping virtuality and real-world environment. It has been paid attention as the next generation digital contents in media art and human-computer interaction (HCI). In this paper, we present a new methodology to evaluate the product appearance design more intuitively by means of SAR technique. The proposed method first projects the high-quality rendered image considering the optical property of materials onto the mock-up of a product. We also conduct a projector-camera calibration to compensate a color distortion according to a projector, a projection surface and environment lighting. The design evaluation methodology we propose offers more flexible and intuitive evaluation environment to a designer and user (evaluator) than previous methods that are performed via a digital display. At the end of this research, we have conducted a case study for designing and evaluating appearance design of an automobile.

  • The capacity of pipelines to resist collapse under external pressure and bending moment is a major aspect of deepwater pipeline design. Existing design codes present interaction equations that quantify pipeline capacities under such loadings, although reasonably accurate, are based on empirical data fitting of the bending strain, and assumed simplistic interaction with external pressure collapse. The rational model for collapse of deepwater pipelines, which are relatively thick with a diameter-to-thickness ratio less than 40, provides a unique theoretical basis since it is derived from first principles such as force equilibrium and compatibility equations. This paper presents the rational model methodology and compares predicted results and recently published full scale experimental data on the subject. Predictive capabilities of the rational model are shown to be excellent. The methodology is extended for the problem of pipeline collapse under point load, longitudinal bending and external pressure. Due to its rational derivation and excellent prediction capabilities, it is recommended that design codes adopt the rational model methodology.

  • During the past few years, design of experiments (DOE) has been gaining acceptance in the telecommunications research community as a mean for designing and analyzing experiments economically and efficiently. In addition, the need for introducing a systematic robust design methodology (i.e., one of the most popular DOE methodologies) to network simulations has been increasing. In this paper, we present an architecture of voice over IP (VoIP) application and the E-Model for calculating the perceived quality of service (QoS). Then, we apply the Taguchi robust design methodology to optimize the perceived QoS of VoIP application, and describe the detailed step-by-step procedures. We have used ns-2 simulator to collect experimental data in which the SN ratio, a robustness measure, is analyzed to determine an optimal design condition. The analysis shows that "initial delay time in playout buffer" is a major control factor for ensuring robust behaviors of the perceived QoS of VoIP. Finally, we verify the proposed optimal design condition using a confirmation experiment.

  • This paper presents Single Phase Switched Reluctance Motor (SPSRM) optimum design for vacuum cleaners using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to determine geometric parameters, and the 2-D Finite Element Method (FEM) has been coupled with the circuit equations of the driving converter. Additionally, an optimum process for SPSRM has been proposed and peformed with geometric and electric parameters thereby influencing the inductance variation and effective torque generation as design variables. SPSRM performances have also been analyzed to determine an optimal design model for maximized efficiency at high power factor. In order to confirm the propriety of the Finite Element Method and motor performance calculation, simulation waveform and experiment waveform for motor voltage and current were compared.

  • This paper purports to investigate the statistical basic principles through "TRIZ-used 6-sigma integrated activity design" and further, to raise "the importance of measuring technical innovative activities based on 6-sigma integrated design methodology by organization". This paper intends to investigate how the activities of the best conditions, which are necessary for the stage of 6-sigma design, are chosen in the TPM-based 6-sigma integration activities. And it will examine the options, when used together with other technique, in the probability statistical methodology. Through the combination of the situations which are chosen when activity techniques, which are mostly used for production and technology, and 6-sigma integration activities are used together, it intends to practically use as the basic data for company standards.

  • This paper proposes the methodology to estimate the routing congestion of modern IC quickly and accurately at the early stage of the design flow. The occurrence of over-congestion in the routing process causes routing failure which then takes unnecessary time to re-design the physical design from the beginning. The precise estimation of routing congestion at the early design stage leads to a successful physical design that minimizes over-congestion which in turn reduces the total design time cost. The proposed estimation method at the block-level floorplan stage measures accurate routing congestion by using the analyzed virtual interconnections of inter/intra blocks, synthesized virtual power/ground and clock networks.

  • A company's sustainable growth is a very important goal, and for this purpose, the company's business model is changing into a convergence of products and services. The purpose of PS-Offering is to maintain a long-term relationship with customers, and customer experience management is necessary for this. This study presents a service design methodology that can support customer experience management of the PS-Offering business model. The experience management portfolio analysis methodology consists of four steps: 1. Deriving service encounter through customer journey maps; 2. Identify the service structure of each service encounter in three forms (FFC, FSC, FSE). 3. Analyze the customer's emotional variables, that is, customer experience, at each service encounter, Finally, 4. After plotting the level of customer experience at the service encounter, the analysis is conducted with a customer experience management portfolio that seeks future strategic plans for this. The methodology presented in this study will help in the service design of the service encounter unit centered on customer experience. And it will improve the financial performance of the company by raising the service level of the business model.

  • This paper recognized a need in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry for new programs and methods of producing reliable energy simulations using BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology. Current methods and programs for running energy simulations are not very timely, difficult to understand, and lack high interoperability between the BIM software and energy simulation software. It is necessary to improve on these drawbacks as design decision are often made without the aid of energy modeling leading to the design and construction of non-optimized buildings with respect to energy efficiency. The goal of this research project is to develop a new methodology to produce energy estimates from a BIM model in a more timely fashion and to improve interoperability between the simulation engine and BIM software. In the proposed methodology, the extracted information from a BIM model is compiled into an INP file and run in a popular energy simulation program, DOE-2, on an hourly basis for a desired time period. Case study showed that the application of this methodology could be used to expediently provide energy simulations while at the same time reproducing the BIM in a more readably three dimensional modeling program. With the aid of an easy to run and easily understood energy simulation methodology, designers will be able to make more energy conscious decisions during the design phase and as changes in design requirements arise.

  • The main purpose of this research is to develop a methodology for designing metadata application profiles(AP) and to design a comprehensive AP for Korea Art and Education Service(KACES), The process of developing a methodology is divided into three steps, analysis of standard metadata schema, analysis of user needs, and content analyses. Metadata principles and guidelines were utilized in designing a KACES AP along with the developed methodology in this study. This paper describes what role the methodology developed here plays in devising metadata elements. The paper also discusses the benefits of three methods for AP design. The study has values in that it provides implications for designing APs for other domains.
