Based on limit equilibrium principles, this study presents a theoretical derivation of a new analytical formulation for estimating magnitude and lateral earth pressure distribution on a retaining wall subjected to seismic loads. The proposed solution accounts for failure wedge inclination, unit weight and friction angle of backfill soil, wall roughness, and horizontal and vertical seismic ground accelerations. The current analysis predicts a nonlinear lateral earth pressure variation along the wall with and without seismic loads. A parametric study is conducted to examine the influence of various parameters on lateral earth pressure distribution. Findings reveal that lateral earth pressure increases with the increase of horizontal ground acceleration while it decreases with the increase of vertical ground acceleration. Compared to classical theory, the position of resultant lateral earth force is located at a higher distance from wall base which in turn has a direct impact on wall stability and economy. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the computations of lateral earth pressure distribution based on the suggested analytical method.

Several researches have been done to estimate the earth pressure on a vertical circular shaft considering three dimensional arching effect and verified them by conducting model tests. However, any equation suggested so far is not applicable in case of multi-layered soils and/or C-${\phi}$ soils. In this study, new equation for estimating the earth pressure acting on the vertical shaft in c-${\phi}$ soils is proposed. A parametric study is performed to investigate the significance of the cohesion when estimating the coefficient of earth pressure in C-${\phi}$ soils and estimating earth pressures in vertical shafts. A method which can estimate the earth pressure on vertical shafts in layered soils is also proposed by assuming a failure surface in layered soils and using the modified equation. This paper is Part I of companion papers focusing on the theoretical aspect of model developments; the experimental verification will be made in Part II.
Considering environmental issues and lack of space, it is a necessity to minimize the amount of excavation. Various types of excavation methods are being used in practice. This study proposes a reasonable method for estimating the earth pressure acting on a reinforced wall in front of a excavated slope. The measured data in the field and numerical analyses were used. Results of the study shows that the earth pressure acting on the excavated wall is less than that estimated by Rankine's equations. It was shown that when the excavated slope is used with the reinforced wall, the pressures acting on the reinforced wall can be greatly reduced.

In evaluating the stability of underground structures and designing prevention methods against the lateral flow, it is necessary to predict the amount and the distribution of the lateral earth pressure acting on these retaining structures. However, because the lateral deformation of real ground is a very complex phenomenon influenced by interaction between volumetric deformation bringing an increase of stability of ground and shear deformation causing failure of ground, any appropriate methods for estimating the lateral earth pressure in consideration of the geotechnical properties of ground and the construction conditions in embankment have not been developed as yet. Therefore, a prediction method, which considers effects of a construction speed of embankment, using the Boussinesq's solution based on the elasticity theory without using complex numerical analyses such as finite element analyses is proposed in this research.
In this study, Terzaghi's formula was modified to solve problems considering the dilatancy effect of the soil for estimating the earth pressure acting on tunnel. It is performed for the comparison with Terzaghi's formula and modified Terzaghi's formula, tunnel model test result of Kobe University Rock Mechanics Laboratory. From comparison results of the earth pressure acting on tunnel, the earth pressure calculated by the Terzaghi's formula was estimated largest value. The earth pressure measured through the tunnel model test was least value. The difference between the earth pressure derived from Terzaghi's original formula and that derived from the modified formula was caused by the dilation effect, which was caused by the soil volume change. The difference between the earth pressure derived from the modified formula and the earth pressure measured through the tunnel model test, earth pressure results from the energy making failure surface. The results of FEM analysis were almost consistent with the results of mathematical analysis.
The earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall in cohesionless soils is different from that on the retaining wall in plane strain condition due to three dimensional arching effect. Accurate estimation of earth pressure is required for the design of vertical cylindrical retaining wall. Failure modes of the ground behind vertical shaft are dependent on ground in-situ stress conditions. Failure modes are actually divided into two modes of cylindrical failure mode and funnel-shaped mode with truncated cone surface. Several researchers have attempted to estimate the earth pressure on cylindrical wall for each failure mode, but they have some limitations. In this paper, several equations for estimating the earth pressure on cylindrical wall in cohesionless soils are investigated and new formulations for two failure modes are suggested. It rationally takes into account the overburden pressure, wall friction, and force equilibriums on sliding surface.
A definite shut-in pressure in hydraulic fracturing techniques is needed for obtaining the correct information on the in-situ stress regimes in rock masses. The relation between the behaviour of hydraulically induced fractures and the condition of remote stress is considered to be major reasons of an ambiguous shut-in pressure in hydraulic fracturing pressure-time history curves. This paper describes the results of a series of numerical analyses carried out using UDEC(Universal Distinct Element Code, Itasca), which is based on the discrete element method, to compare several methods for determining the shut-in pressure during hydraulic fracturing. The fully coupling of hydraulic and mechanical analysis was applied, and the effects of four different discontinuity geometries in numerical modelling have been investigated for this purpose. The effects of different remote stress regimes and different physical properties on hydraulic fracture propagation have been also analyzed. Several methods for obtaining shut-in pressure from the ambiguous shut-in curves have been applied to all the numerical models. The graphical intersection methods, such as (P vs. t) method, (P vs. log(t)) method, (log(P) vs. log(t)) method, give smaller values of the shut-in pressure than the statistical method, (dP/dt vs. P). Care should be taken in selecting a method for shut-in pressure, because there can be existed a stress anomaly around the wellbore and fracturing from the wellbore by a constant flow rate may have a more complicate mechanism.

The earth pressure acting on a circular shaft wall is smaller than that acting on the wall in plane strain condition due to the three dimensional axi-symmetric arching effect. Accurate estimation of the earth pressure is required for the design of the shaft wall. In this study, the stress model considering the decrease of earth pressure due to the horizontal and vertical arching effect and the influence of shape ratio (shaft height/radius) is proposed. In addition, model test on the sandy soil is conducted and a comparison is made between the stress model and the test results. The comparison shows that the proposed stress model is in agreement with test results; decrease of shape ratio (increase of radius) leads to stress state equal to the plane strain condition and approximate stress distribution is found between stress model and model test results.

Piles and pile foundations have been in common use since very early times. Usually function of piles is to carry load to a depth at which adequate support is available. Another important use of piles is to furnish lateral support and nowadays it is getting highlighted due to the wind load, lateral action of earthquake, and so on. After Broms (1964), many researchers have been suggested methods for estimating lateral capacity of pile. But each method assumes different earth pressure distribution and lateral earth pressure coefficient and it gives confusion to pile designers. Lateral earth pressure, essential in lateral capacity estimation, influenced by pile's behavior under lateral load. Prasad and Chari (1999) assumed the rotation point of pile and suggested an equation of ultimate lateral load capacity. In this study, we investigate the depth of rotation point in both homogeneous soil and multi layered soil, and compare to the estimation value by previous research. To model the pile set up in the sand, we use the chamber and small scale steel pile, and rain drop method. Test results show the rotation point is formed where the Prasad and Chari's estimation value, and they also show multi layered condition affects to location of rotation point to be scattered.
