Recent Advances in Di-$\pi$-methane Processes. Novel Reactions of 1,4-Unsaturated Compounds Promoted by Triplet Sensitization and Photoelectron Transfer

  • Recent studies on the photoreactivity of l,4-unsaturated systems have changed some ideas that were firmly established in this area of research for many years. Thus, we have described the first examples of 2-aza-di-$\pi$-methane (2-ADPM) rearrangements promoted by triplet-sensitization and by single electron transfer (SET) using electron-acceptor sensitizers. These reactions afford N-vinylaziridine and cyclopropylimine photoproducts in the first examples of di-$\pi$-methane processes that yield three-membered ring heterocycles. l-Aza-1,4-dienes also undergo SET-promoted l-aza-di-$\pi$-methane (l-ADPM) rearrangements via radical-cation intermediates using electron acceptor sensitizers. In some cases, alternative cyclizations yielding different carbocycles and heterocycles have been observed. The l-ADPM and di-$\pi$-methane (DPM) reactions also occur via radical-anion intermediates on irradiation using electron donor sensitizers. On the other hand, the photoreactivity reported for $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes for many years was decarbonylation to the corresponding alkenes. However, our studies demonstrate that these compounds undergo the oxa-di-$\pi$-methane (ODPM) rearrangement with high chemical and quantum efficiency. A comparison of the photochemical reactivity of $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes and corresponding methyl ketones has shown that the ketones do not undergo the ODPM rearrangement while the corresponding aldehydes are reactive by this pathway. Monosubstituted $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated aldehydes at C-2 undergo the ODPM rearrangement yielding the corresponding cyclopropane carbaldehydes diastereoselectively. Finally, we have described the first examples of reactions, similar to the well know Norrish Type I process, which take place in the triplet excited state of $\beta$,${\gamma}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by excitation of the C-C double bond instead of the carbonyl group.

하수슬러지를 이용한 혐기성소화조에서 미생물 전기화학기술의 역할 (Function of Microbial Electrochemical Technology in Anaerobic Digestion using Sewage Sludge)

  • Microbial electrochemical technology (MET) has recently been studied to improve the efficiency of a traditional anaerobic digestion (AD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of MET in the system when MET was combined with traditional AD (i.e., AD-MET). Electrodes used in the MET were Cu coated graphite electrodes. They were supplied with a voltage of 0.3 V. AD started to generate methane in 80 days. But AD-MET started to generate methane from the initial operation after the system started. It was observed that AD-MET reached steady state faster and produced higher methane yield than AD. During the steady state, the average daily methane productions in AD and AD-MET were 2.3L/d and 4.9L/d, respectively. Methane yields were 0.07-CH4/g‧CODre in AD and 0.25L-CH4/g‧CODre in AD-MET. In AD-MET, the production rates of total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) were 0.12 mg TVFAs/mg VS‧d and 0.35 mg SCOD/mg VS‧d, respectively. They were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those in AD. However, the concentrations of residual TVFAs in both systems were not significantly (p > 0.05) different from each other, confirming that methane conversion in AD-MET was greater than that in AD.

제지슬러지의 혐기메탄발효 (Methane Fermentation of the Paper Mill Sludge under Anaerobic Condition)

  • 제지공장의 슬러지를 활성오니슬러지와 집수조슬러지로 나누어 C/N율, 메탄발효폐액 첨가 그리고 몇몇 첨가제를 처리하고 발생한 혐기발효가스 중 메탄함량을 측정하여 각각의 처리효과를 조사해 보았다. 1. 활성오니 제지슬러지를 이용한 메탄발효의 최적 C/N율은 60으로 이전의 다른 재료들과는 다른 경향이었다. 2. 혐기발효 폐액의 첨가로 메탄함량 40% 도달 시간은 약 2일정도 앞당겼지만, 10일간의 총 메탄발생량은 1/8 수준으로 적었다. 3. 첨가제중 sodium sulfide와 ethylacetate의 처리효과는 발효폐액 첨가구에서 뚜렷하였고, 무첨가구에서도 sodium sulfide는 1.3배의 메탄생성 증가에 기여하였다. 4. 황화수소가 제거된 제지슬러지에서는 메탄이 전혀 생성되지 않았고, sodium sulfide가 첨가된 처리구에서는 메탄생성이 증가되었기에 제지슬러지 메탄발효에서 황은 필수적이라고 할 수 있다.

논토양에서 바이오차르 투입 및 완효성비료 시용에 따른 메탄발생량과 작물생산량 변화 (Changes in Crop Yield and $CH_4$ Emission from Rice Paddy Soils Applied with Biochar and Slow-release Fertilizer)

  • Emission reduction of $CH_4$ (methane gas) from rice paddy soil is a very important measure for climate change mitigation in agricultural sector. In this study, we investigated the changes in crop yield and $CH_4$ emissions in response to application of biochar and fertilizers. The experimental site is located in Hwasung, Kyunggido and experimental design is the split-plot method with three replicates. Treatments included rice straw (RS) and biochar (BC) amendments nested with the conventional NPK fertilizer (NPK) and slow release fertilizer (SRF). Control was also prepared with the soil with the conventional NPK fertilization with no amendment. Measurement of $CH_4$ emission was conducted during the growing season of 2014 using a dynamic chamber method. The results showed that application of rice straw increased daily $CH_4$ emission rate by 15%, while application of biochar reduced daily $CH_4$ emission rate by 38%. When we combined biochar application with slow release fertilizer, $CH_4$ emission was reduced by 45%. Further, the crop yield was also increased in all treatments compared with the control except for the treatment of rice straw application with slow release fertilizer. Overall results imply that biochar amendment to agricultural soil can be an effective strategy to decrease annual $CH_4$ emission with no reduction in crop yield.

Multi-environment Trial Analysis for Yield-related Traits of Early Maturing Korean Rice Cultivars

  • Genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) refers to the comparative response of genotypes to different environments conditions. Thus, understanding GEI is a fundamental component for selecting superior genotypes for breeding programs. The significance of utilizing early maturing cultivars not only provides flexibility in planting dates, but also serves as an effective strategy to reduce methane emission from the paddy fields. In this study, we conducted multi-environment trials (METs) to evaluate yield-related traits such as culm length, panicle length, panicle number, spikelet per plant, and thousand grain weight. A total of eighty-one Korean commercial rice cultivars categorized as early maturing cultivars, were cultivated in three regions, two planting seasons for two years. The genotype main effect plus genotype-by-environment interaction (GGE) biplot analysis of yield-related traits and grain yield explained 70.02-91.24% of genotype plus GEI variation, and exhibited various patterns of mega-environment delineation, discriminating ability, representativeness, and genotype rankings across the planting seasons and environments. Moreover, simultaneous selection using weighted average of absolute scores from the singular value decomposition (WAASB) and multi-trait stability index (MTSI) revealed six highly recommended genotypes with high stability and crop productivity. The winning genotypes under specific environment can be utilized as useful genetic materials to develop regional specialty cultivars, and recommended genotypes can be used as elite climate-resilient parents to improve yield-potential and reduce methane emission as part to accomplish carbon-neutrality.

우분뇨와 폐잔디의 단독 및 병합소화 잠재량 평가 (Biogas potential estimation for mono- and co-digestion of cow manure and waste grass)

  • 본 연구에서는 우분뇨와 폐잔디를 이용한 혐기소화 잠재성을 단독 및 병합 조건에서 평가하였다. 두 종의 유기성 폐자원은 휘발성고형분(VS) 기준 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, 0:100의 다섯 가지 혼합비 조건에서 회분식 BMP(biochemical methane potential) 테스트를 통해 바이오가스 생산을 측정하였다. 또한, 서로 다른 3개의 온도조건(25℃, 30℃, 35℃)을 적용하여 총 15개 실험 조건을 비교하였다. 실험 결과, 반응 온도가 높을수록, 폐잔디의 혼합비가 높을수록 더 높은 메탄 수율과 최대 메탄 생산율이 관측되었다. 실험 결과를 바탕으로 유효체적 240(농장규모) 또는 2,400(마을 규모) ㎥의 가상의 혐기소화조를 가정하여 서로 다른 조건에 따른 에너지 수지를 비교하였다. 예측된 에너지 생산량은 반응 온도가 높을수록 더 많았으나 소화조 가온 등에 따른 에너지 소모량을 고려한 에너지 순생산량은 30℃, 35℃, 25℃ 순으로 높게 예측되었다. 따라서 에너지 순생산량을 최대화하기 위한 조건 도출을 위해서는 메탄 수율 등의 실험적 측정 외에도 구체적인 소화조의 설계 인자를 고려해야 하는 것으로 평가되었다.

Effect of condensed tannins from Ficus infectoria and Psidium guajava leaf meal mixture on nutrient metabolism, methane emission and performance of lambs

  • Objective: The study examined the effect of condensed tannins (CT) containing Ficus infectoria and Psidium guajava leaf meal mixture (LMM) supplementation on nutrient metabolism, methane emission and performance of lambs. Methods: Twenty four lambs of ~6 months age (average body weight $10.1{\pm}0.60kg$) were randomly divided into 4 dietary treatments (CT-0, CT-1, CT-1.5, and CT-2 containing 0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 percent CT through LMM, respectively) consisting of 6 lambs each in a completely randomized design. All the lambs were offered a basal diet of wheat straw ad libitum, oat hay (100 g/d) along with required amount of concentrate mixture to meet their nutrient requirements for a period of 6 months. After 3 months of experimental feeding, a metabolism trial of 6 days duration was conducted on all 24 lambs to determine nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance. Urinary excretion of purine derivatives and microbial protein synthesis were determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Respiration chamber study was started at the mid of 5th month of experimental feeding trial. Whole energy balance trials were conducted on individual lamb one after the other, in an open circuit respiration calorimeter. Results: Intake of dry matter and organic matter (g/d) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in CT-1.5 than control. Digestibility of various nutrients did not differ irrespective of treatments. Nitrogen retention and microbial nitrogen synthesis (g/d) was significantly (p<0.01) higher in CT-1.5 and CT-2 groups relative to CT-0.Total body weight gain (kg) and average daily gain (g) were significantly (linear, p<0.01) higher in CT-1.5 followed by CT-1 and CT-0, respectively. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) by lambs was significantly (linear, p<0.01) better in CT-1.5 followed by CT-2 and CT-0, respectively. Total wool yield (g; g/d) was linearly (p<0.05) higher for CT-1.5 than CT-0. Methane emission was linearly decreased (p<0.05) in CT groups and reduction was highest (p<0.01) in CT-2 followed by CT-1.5 and CT-1. Methane energy (kcal/d) was linearly decreased (p<0.05) in CT groups. Conclusion: The CT supplementation at 1% to 2% of the diet through Ficus infectoria and Psidium guajava LMM significantly improved nitrogen metabolism, growth performance, wool yield, FCR and reduced methane emission by lambs.

메탄 자열개질 반응에 대한 Ni/CeO2-ZrO2 촉매의 영향 (Influence of Ni/CeO2-ZrO2 Catalysts on Methane Autothermal Reforming)

  • 알루미나가 코팅된 허니컴 구조의 금속모노리스에 담지된 $Ni/Ce_XZr_{(1-X)}O_2$ 촉매특성이 메탄의 자열개질 반응에 대해 연구되었다. Ce/Zr 비를 변화시킨 촉매 중 $Ni/Ce_{0.80}Zr_{0.20}O_2$ 촉매가 가장 높은 $CH_4$ 전환율을 나타내었다. $Ni/Ce_{0.80}Zr_{0.20}O_2$ 촉매의 Ni 함량에 따른 영향이 조사되었고, 15 wt%의 Ni을 담지하였을 때 가장 우수한 활성을 보여주었다. 또한 $H_2O/CH_4$ 비가 증가할수록 $H_2$ 수율은 증가하였다. $O_2/CH_4$ 비가 증가할수록 $CH_4$ 전환율은 향상되고, 반면에 $H_2$ 수율은 감소하였다. $GHSV=30,000h^{-1}$, S/C/O=2/1/0.5, 반응온도=$800^{\circ}C$에서 30시간 자열 개질반응을 테스트 한 결과, $Ni(15wt%)/Ce_{0.80}Zr_{0.20}O_2$ 촉매가 우수한 $CH_4$ 전환율(${\geq}99%$)과 안정성을 보여주었다.

용량성 rf 플라즈마를 이용한 메탄으로부터의 합성가스 제조 (Preparation of Synthesis Gas from Methane in a Capacitive rf Discharge)

  • 저압에서 용량성 라디오 주파수 방전을 이용하여 메탄을 합성가스로 전환시키는 반응을 고찰하였다. 플라즈마에서 발생된 높은 에너지를 갖는 전자들이 메탄분자와 산소를 함유하고 있는 기체 분자들과 충돌에 의해 합성가스로 전환되었다. 입력전력, 함산소화합물의 종류, 함산소화합물과 메탄의 조성이 메탄 전환율 및 수소와 일산화탄소의 수율에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 메탄 전환율은 최대 100%이었으며, 합성가스이외의 다른 화합물들은 거의 생성되지 않았다. 입력전력이 증가함에 따라 메탄전환율과 합성가스의 수율이 증가하였으며, 함산소화합물의 종류에 따라 각각 다른 조성의 합성가스를 생성할 수 있었다. 메탄과 함산소화합물을 함께 반응시킴으로써 순수한 합성가스를 제조할 수 있었는데 함산소화합물의 종류에 따라 합성가스의 조성을 조절할 수 있었으며 불순물이 거의 없는 순수한 생성물을 얻을 수 있었다.

Methane의 고온열분해에 의한 Tubluar reactor에서의 수소 및 탄소 생성 특성 (Characteristics of Hydrogen and Carbon Production in Tubluar Reactor by Thermal Decomposition of Methane)

  • This work was focused on the thermal decomposition of methane into hydrogen and carbon black without emitting carbon dioxide. Extensive experimental investigation on the thermal decomposition of methane has been carried out using a continuous flow reaction system with tubular reactor. The experiments were conducted at the atmospheric pressure condition in the wide range of temperature ($950-1150^{\circ}C$) and flow rate (250 - 1500 ml/min) in order to study their dependency on hydrogen yield. During the experiments the carbon black was successfully recovered as an useful product. Undesirable pyrocarbon was also formed as solid film, which was deposited on the inside surface of tubular reactor. The film of pyrocarbon in the reactor wall became thicker and thicker, finally blocking the reactor. The design of an efficient reactor which can effectively suppress the formation of pyrocarbon was thought to be one of the most important subjects in the thermal cracking of methane.
