  • The objeative of this study is to study how to rapidly convert tidal land into cultivable land. The study of a rapid, reasonable desalinization method is conducted at Namyang tidal land which represents soil texture of tidal lands along the south west costa larea of Korea. Therefore, Researches were made at many Pilots in order to find a way of high efficiency of leaching with simpler facilities and cheaper costs. The results of study are briefly summarized as follaws: 1. Subdrainage efficieny is 35%. This is a Poorly drained area, and needs longer leaching desalinization period. 2. The efficieny of desalinization in P.V.C 16 meters plot is the same as that of mole drainage 2 meters plot. P.V.C 4 meters plot has desalinization effect as much as two times compared to P.V.C 16 meters plot. 3. Because the soil texture is silty-clay, desalinization in non-treated plot of sub-drainage and surface drainage desalinization take three times longer period in comparision with P.V.C 4 meters plot. 4. As to the desalinization rate of soluble salt in the soil, the efficieny of desalinization of the topsoil in P.V.C plots was 50% higher than that of mole drainage plot and about 170% higher than that of non-treated plot. In the deep soil salt accumulation at topsoil was observed in non-treated and mole drainage plots, but efficiency in P.V.C polt is about 40 times as high as that of mole drainage and non-treated plot. 5. As to the results of use gypsum and lime as sub-drainage soil improver, gypsum was 60% more efficieny than lime in the continuously inundated plot and 44% in the intermittently inundated plot. The efficieny of gypsum and lime in the intermittently flooded plot is 35% and 42% higher than that of continuously flooded plot reapeaticee1y.

  • This is about an environmental study of groundwater interference by hydrodynamic dispersion between the well A and well C in Dongsam-dong, the Yeongdo Island, Pusan, Korea. The groundwater in the study wells come from the fracture zones deeply seated in welded lapilli rhyodacitic tuff of the Late Cretaceous Yucheon Group. The boring depth at the well A is 190 meters, and the optimal pumping rate of the well A is about 100 cubic meters per day therein. The fractured aquifers in impermeable welded tuff show the conjugate fracturing type and are of anisotropic. The aquifers along two fracture zones in the well A are 80 and 100 meters in depth, respectively. It is not suggested that those fractured aquifers are simply connected between the well A and C. The sea level fluctuation by ebb and high tides in a day is not effective to the groundwater table in the well A. The pumping for 15 days at the well A doesn't give rise to any changes of the groundwater levels in the neighbor well C. The radius of influence of the well A is measured as less than 200 meters. The measuring electric conductivity for the test of salt tracer doesn't testify any relationship between the well A and the well C. There is the main difference between the well A and the well C on the basis of the water analysis of those wells. the well A is located in the high content zone of salt much over the standard value for drinking, whereas the other wells B. C. D are in the low content area of salt below the standard value. It is elucidated for the high content zone of salt in Yeongdo around the well A to have been uplifted over 20 meters.

  • Devices to measure the blood pressure of patients are being used without any calibration in a hospital. It is an important to show consistent values when any medical devices measure the same patients regardless they are sphygmomanometer or fully automatic electronic blood pressure meter. We compared sphygmomanometer and fully automatic electronic blood pressure meters with standard digital blood pressure monitor (SDBPM) to evaluate the consistency of the small healthy subjects. We measured the blood pressure from six healthy subjects (three of 20~40 years and three of 40~60 years old). Two sphygmomanometer and two fully automatic electronic blood pressure meters were used and compared with the SDBPM. Blood pressures measured from right and left arms each and were compared. All six healthy subjects showed normal blood pressure values. In general, left blood pressure values showed higher values than right side. Comparing SDBPM, with the other monitors, the systolic pressure showed ${\pm}$ 34.8% difference and ${\pm}$ 33.3% for the diastolic pressure. Correlation between SDBPM and Sphygmomanometer was 0.59~0.71, and 0.50~0.70 for fully automated digital BP monitors. It fell in grade-D when we apply the BHS(British hypertension society). AAMI(American association for the advancement of medical instrumentation) also showed unsatisfactory results for the mean value (${\leq}$ 5 mmHg) and standard deviation (${\leq}$ 8 mmHg). We tested sphygmomanometer and fully automatic electronic blood pressure meters and compared with a standard digital blood pressure monitor. All devices showed inconsistent blood pressures. A reliable calibration system is highly needed for all devices in all hospitals.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical study on seismic performance of a super tall steel tower structure. The steel tower, with a height of 388 meters, employs a steel space truss with spiral steel columns to serve as its main lateral load resisting system. Moreover, this space truss was surrounded by the spiral steel columns to form a steel mega system in order to support a 12-story platform building which is located from the height of 230 meters to 263 meters. A 1/40 scaled model for this tower structure was made and tested on shake table under a series of one- and two-dimensional earthquake excitations with gradually increasing acceleration amplitudes. The test model performed elastically up to the seismic excitations representing the earthquakes with a return period of 475 years, and the test model also survived with limited damages under the seismic excitations representing the earthquakes with a return period 2475 years. A finite element model for the prototype structure was further developed and verified. It was noted that the model predictions on dynamic properties and displacement responses agreed reasonably well with test results. The maximum inter-story drift of the tower structure was obtained, and the stress in the steel members was investigated. Results indicated that larger displacement responses were observed for the section from the height of 50 meters to 100 meters in the tower structure. For structural design, applicable measures should be adopted to increase the stiffness and ductility for this section in order to avoid excessive deformations, and to improve the serviceability of the prototype structure.

  • This study focuses on the fauna, seasonal prevalence and altitudinal distribution of the flies from March to November, 2008 in Mt. Hallasan, Jejudo Island, Korea. The fauna of flies was 39 species belonging to 5 Families which consist of 12 Calliphoridae, 19 Muscidae, 5 Sarcophagidae, 1 Dryomyzidae 1, Scathophagidae and 1 Anthomyiidae. The total number of flies collected was 21,605 with sex ratio of 57.98% in Mt. Halla. The ratio is higher than that of the residential area and other mountain survey sites. The average number of per trap individuals collected on the trapping day is 267, which is similar with the average of Mts. Jiryong, Juwang, Palgong and Gumo. The five dominant species showed a distinctive seasonal prevalence of 92.6% of the total flies: Chrysomyia pinguis (34.2%), Calliphora lata (25.3%), Hydrotaea dentipes(23.1%), Fannia scalaris (5.1%), and Lucilia caesar (4.9%). The seasonal prevalence of the flies was from the beginning of March to the end of November, and the highest peak time of the whole flies, males and females were different respectively. In the similarity index of the flies collected in different altitude, that of between 1,000 meters and 1,500 meters was the highest among the indices of 500 meters and above 1,000 meters. The index at each altitude was above 80% because of the same area. The diversity index of fly species was between 0.00 and 0.88 through altitudinal traps monthly. The highest index in Trap 1 was 0.88 in October, in Trap 2, 0.82 in July and in Trap 3, 0.63 in July. The diversity above 1,000 meters was most various in July. The five dominant species of C. pinguis, C. lata, H dentipes, F. scalaris, and L. caesar showed distinctive seasonal prevalence, relative abundance and altitudinal distribution respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the accessibility to the place for outdoor exercise. For that, the departure (resident) location of the users of outdoor exercise equipment within 12 parks in Seoul have been investigated. A total of 1,733 people have been surveyed during the two-week period between Aug.2 and Aug. 15 and 815 cases were analyzed. We also investigated demographic characteristics, access method and related factors such as location, climate and visiting time. The results were coded through ArcGis program and the accessibility to each exercise location, difference in regional accessibility and accessibility characteristics in terms of climate and time have been analyzed. The results are as follows: First, visitors to the Han River start from the places further than the visitors to the streamlines. Second, the average moving distance is longer for the users aged under-60 than for the users aged 60 and over to reach the exercise place. And the average moving distance for visitors to the Han River destination is the longest with 748 meters, followed by 203 meters for general parks and 92 meters for streamline parks, respectively. Third, in each non-waterfront parks, the moving distance by users under-60 was longer by about 230 meters than that by users 60 and over. Fourth, exercisers in the weekend travel more by 244 meters than those during the midweek users to reach the exercise place. Fifth, the number of visitors to the Han River increased in the weekend while visitors to the streamlines decreased in the same period. Sixth, the traveling length for bicycle users is three times as much as that for pedestrian visitors. And the departure locations of bicycle users were more widely distributed.

  • The pinus trees planted by the road in the Seoul -Suwen high-way was surveyed on the damages due to air pollution during April and May in 1984. The results were as follows ; The concentration of SO$_2$was ranged from 0.003 to 0.05ppm, NOx from 0.03 to 0.1ppm and the amount of dust fall, from 10 to 110ton/km$^2$/month. While the concentrations of gaseous pollutants such as SO$_2$and NOx were notsignificantly different in the type of road and with in the distence of 20 meters from the road the dust falls were decreased as remoted from the road. The tissue damages of leaves were determined by the microscopic observation. The higher concentration of dust fall on the leaf, the more severe damage observed in the stomata. The attached dust of the leaves were ranged from 1l to 75mg/g of leaf, and those were significantly incereased as near from road. The sulfur contents of leaves were measured at 0.15g/100g of leaf in the 5 meters located and at 0.064g/100g of leaf in the 20 meters, and the lead contents, 45ug/g of leaf in the 5 meters and 24ug/g in the 15 meters. The appearent damages of plant were very much corelated to the attached dusts of leaves the sulfur contents and the amount of dust fall, and the multiple regression analysis between the damages and factors of air pollution were under taken. As increment of vehicle in future, the air Pollution was predicted and the plant damages were estimated.

  • The calibration methods of neutron-measuring devices such as the neutron survey meter have advantages and disadvantages. To compare the calibration factors obtained by the shadow cone method and semi-empirical method, 10 neutron survey meters of five different types were used in this study. This experiment was performed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI; Daejeon, South Korea), and the calibration neutron fields were constructed using a $^{252}Californium$ ($^{252}Cf$) neutron source, which was positioned in the center of the neutron irradiation room. The neutron spectra of the calibration neutron fields were measured by a europium-activated lithium iodide scintillator in combination with KAERI's Bonner sphere system. When the shadow cone method was used, 10 single moderator-based survey meters exhibited a smaller calibration factor by as much as 3.1-9.3% than that of the semi-empirical method. This finding indicates that neutron survey meters underestimated the scattered neutrons and attenuated neutrons (i.e., the total scatter corrections). This underestimation of the calibration factor was attributed to the fact that single moderator-based survey meters have an under-ambient dose equivalent response in the thermal or thermal-dominant neutron field. As a result, when the shadow cone method is used for a single moderator-based survey meter, an additional correction and the International Organization for Standardization standard 8529-2 for room-scattered neutrons should be considered.

  • Resistance standards from 1 ${\Omega}$ to 100 $k{\Omega}$, with calculable frequency dependencies of up to 1 MHz, have been developed for the calibration of commercial inductance-capacitance-resistance (LCR) meters and impedance analyzers. The resistors are designed on the basis of single bifilar loops. The typical resistance change from dc to 1 MHz is from 200 to $800\;{\mu}{\Omega}/{\Omega}$. According to the measurement results, the frequency dependencies of the resistors are severaltimes lower than the measurement uncertainty of commercial LCR meters.
