As a part of effort to establish an offshore wind resource assessment system of the Korean Peninsula, a numeric wind simulation using mesoscale climate model MM5 and a spatial distribution of offshore wind extracted from SAR remote-sensing satellite image is compared and analyzed. According to the analyzed results, the numeric wind simulation is found to have wind speed over predication tendency at the coastal sea area. Therefore, it is determined that a high-resolution wind simulation is required for complicated coastal landforms. The two methods are verified as useful ways to identify the spatial distribution of offshore wind by mutual complementation and if the meteor-statistical comparative analysis is performed in the future using adequate number of satellite images, it is expected to derive a general methodology enabling systematic validation and correction of the numeric wind simulation.
In the complex terrain where local wind systems are formed, accurate understanding of regional wind variability is required for wind resource assessment. In this paper, cluster analysis based on the similarity of time-series wind vector was applied to classify wind regions with similar wind characteristics and the meteorological validity of regionalization method was evaluated. Wind regions in Jeju Island and Busan were classified using the wind resource map of Korea created by a mesoscale numerical weather prediction modeling. The evaluation was performed by comparing wind speed, wind direction, and wind variability of each wind region. Wind characteristics, such as mean wind speed and prevailing wind direction, in the same wind region were similar and wind characteristics in different wind regions were meteor-statistically distinct. It was able to identify a singular wind region at the top area of Mt. Halla using the inconsistency of wind direction variability. Furthermore, it was found that the regionalization results correspond with the topographic features of Jeju Island and Busan, showing the validity.
Researches on the gesture recognition have become a very interesting topic in the computer vision area, Gesture recognition from visual images has a number of potential applicationssuch as HCI (Human Computer Interaction), VR(Virtual Reality), machine vision. To overcome thetechnical barriers in visual processing, conventional approaches have employed cumbersome devicessuch as datagloves or color marked gloves. In this research, we capture gesture images without usingexternal devices and generate a gesture trajectery composed of point-tokens. The trajectory Is spottedusing phase-based velocity constraints and recognized using the discrete left-right HMM. Inputvectors to the HMM are obtained by using the LBG clustering algorithm on a polar-coordinate spacewhere point-tokens on the Cartesian space .are converted. A gesture vocabulary is composed oftwenty-two dynamic hand gestures for editing drawing elements. In our experiment, one hundred dataper gesture are collected from twenty persons, Fifty data are used for training and another fifty datafor recognition experiment. The recognition result shows about 95% recognition rate and also thepossibility that these results can be applied to several potential systems operated by gestures. Thedeveloped system is running in real time for editing basic graphic primitives in the hardwareenvironments of a Pentium-pro (200 MHz), a Matrox Meteor graphic board and a CCD camera, anda Window95 and Visual C++ software environment.

Since the operation of the King Sejong Station (KSS) started in Antarctic Peninsula in 1989, there have been continuous efforts to perform the observation for the upper atmosphere. The observations during the initial period of the station include Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) and Michelson Interferometer for the mesosphere and thermosphere, which are no longer in operation. In 2002, in collaboration with York University, Canada, the Spectral Airglow Temperature Imager (SATI) was installed to observe the temperature in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region and it has still been producing the mesopause temperature data until present. The observation was extended by installing the meteor radar in 2007 to observe the neutral winds and temperature in the MLT region during the day and night in collaboration with Chungnam National University. We also installed the all sky camera in 2008 to observe the wave structures in the MLT region. All these observations are utilized to study on the physical characteristics of the MLT region and also on the wave phenomena such as the tide and gravity wave in the upper atmosphere over KSS that is well known for the strong gravity wave activity. In this article, brief introductions for the currently operating instruments at KSS will be presented with their applications for the study of the upper atmosphere.
Sensitivity analysis of wind resource micrositing has been performed through the application case at the Antarctic King Sejong station with the most representative micrositing softwares: WAsP, WindSim and Meteodyn WT. The wind data obtained from two met-masts separated 625m were applied as a climatology input condition of micro-scale wind mapping. A tower shading effect on the met-mast installed 20m apart from the warehouse has been assessed by the CFD software Fluent and confirmed a negligible influence on wind speed measurement. Theoretically, micro-scale wind maps generated by the two met-data located within the same wind system and strongly correlated meteor-statistically should be identical if nothing influenced on wind prediction but orography. They, however, show discrepancies due to nonlinear effects induced by surrounding complex terrain. From the comparison of sensitivity analysis, Meteodyn WT employing 1-equation turbulence model showed 68% higher RMSE error of wind speed prediction than that of WindSim using the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model, while a linear-theoretical model WAsP showed 21% higher error. Consequently, the CFD model WindSim would predict wind field over complex terrain more reliable and less sensitive to climatology input data than other micrositing models. The auto-validation method proposed in this paper and the evaluation result of the micrositing softwares would be anticipated a good reference of wind resource assessments in complex terrain.

The local wind systems in the Pohang region were categorized into wind sectors. Still, thorough knowledge of wind resource assessment, wind environment analysis, and atmospheric environmental impact assessment was required since the region has outstanding wind resources, it is located on the path of typhoon, and it has large-scale atmospheric pollution sources. To overcome the resolution limitation of meteorological dataset and problems of categorization criteria of the preceding studies, the high-resolution wind resource map of the Korea Institute of Energy Research was used as time-series meteorological data; the 2-step method of determining the clustering coefficient through hierarchical clustering analysis and subsequently categorizing the wind sectors through non-hierarchical K-means clustering analysis was adopted. The similarity of normalized time-series wind vector was proposed as the Euclidean distance. The meteor-statistical characteristics of the mean vector wind distribution and meteorological variables of each wind sector were compared. The comparison confirmed significant differences among wind sectors according to the terrain elevation, mean wind speed, Weibull shape parameter, etc.
Active asteroids are celestial bodies that distinctively have asteroid-like orbital elements but show comet-like activity. They exhibit the activities due to the sublimation of volatile ices, impacts with small objects or break-up by rapid rotations. As of 2019 February, 30 active asteroids are detected in the outer main belt (i.e., the semimajor axes a>2.5 au) while only 3 of them in the inner main belt (a<2.5 au), suggesting that sublimation of remaining icy volatiles can be one of the most fundamental mechanisms for the activities. A sudden activity of (6478) Gault was reported in early 2019. The asteroid was discovered in 1988 and has exhibited its inactive appearance until the end of last year. Soon after the report, we have conducted imaging observations using the Seoul National University Observatory 1.0-m telescope and the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) to monitor the activity. The observed images showed a primary dust tail that consists of dust grains ejected early November in 2018. Later, another tail developed, indicating further dust ejection occurred around late December 2018. Our model simulation to reproduce the morphology of the dust cloud suggests that the slightly-curved primary dust tail results from a continuous dust ejection over weeks. The total mass of ejecta was estimated to XX kg (XX% of the asteroid mass). Such continuous dust ejection for the inner active asteroids was unexpected because ice might have already sublimated from subsurfaces of inner main belt. Based on our observational evidence, we will discuss how inner asteroids are activated and eject dust continuously.

We have investigated the variations of sporadic E (Es) layer using the measurements of digisondes at Icheon ($37.14^{\circ}N$, $127.54^{\circ}E$, IC) and Jeju ($33.4^{\circ}N$, $126.30^{\circ}E$, JJ) in 2011-2018. The Es occurrence rate and its critical frequency (foEs) have peak values in summer at both IC and JJ in consistent with their known seasonal variations at mid-latitudes. The virtual height of the Es layer (h'Es) during equinox months is greater than that in other months. It may be related to the similar variation of meteor peak heights. The h'Es shows the semidiurnal variations with two peaks at early in the morning and late in the afternoon during equinoxes and summer. However, the semi-diurnal variation is not obvious in winter. The semi-diurnal variation is generally thought to be caused by the semi-diurnal tidal variation in the neutral wind shear, whose measurements, however, are rare and not available in the region of interest. To investigate the formation mechanism of Es, we have derived the vertical ion drift velocity using the Horizontal Wind Model (HWM) 14, International Geomagnetic Reference Field, and Naval Research Laboratory Mass Spectrometer and Incoherent Scatter Radar-00 models. Our results show that h'Es preferentially occur at the altitudes where the direction of the vertical ion velocity changes. This result indicates the significant role of ion convergence in the creation of Es.

The jurisprudential legal rules govern the way Muslims react and interact to daily life. This creates a huge stream of questions, that require highly qualified and well-educated individuals, called Muftis. With Muslims representing almost 25% of the planet population, and the scarcity of qualified Muftis, this creates a demand supply problem calling for Automation solutions. This motivates the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to solve this problem, which requires a well-designed Question-Answering (QA) system to solve it. In this work, we propose a QA system, based on retrieval augmented generative transformer model for jurisprudential legal question. The main idea in the proposed architecture is the leverage of both state-of-the art transformer models, and the existing knowledge base of legal sources and question-answers. With the sensitivity of the domain in mind, due to its importance in Muslims daily lives, our design balances between exploitation of knowledge bases, and exploration provided by the generative transformer models. We collect a custom data set of 850,000 entries, that includes the question, answer, and category of the question. Our evaluation methodology is based on both quantitative and qualitative methods. We use metrics like BERTScore and METEOR to evaluate the precision and recall of the system. We also provide many qualitative results that show the quality of the generated answers, and how relevant they are to the asked questions.

This study examines exchange rate volatility spillovers that affect the exchange rate volatility of Korean currency. For this study, the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, and Canadian dollar are used as the currencies of developed countries, and the Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar are used as the currencies of the areas near Korea. The GARCH(1.1) model is employed for weekly data covering the period from January 2009 to December 2017. This study finds that the volatility spillovers from the Canadian dollar, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar to the Korean won are significant, while the volatility spillovers from the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, Thai baht, and Indonesian rupiah to the Korean won are insignificant. In terms of the economic system and structure, Japan, Britain, and European countries are at a higher level than Korea, while Thailand and Indonesia are at a lower level than Korea. Canada, Singapore, and Australia are almost at the same level as Korea. Therefore, these results appear to be derived from the phenomenon of exchange rate spillovers among countries with a similar economic system and structures, and contradict the literature, which has argued that exchange rates volatility spillovers occur among countries that are in the same area geographically.
