  • The effect of grain refinement of the strength and ductility of metallic materials is investigated. A model in which a single phase material is considered as an effectively two-phase one is discussed. A distinctive feature of the model is that grain boundaries are treated as a separate phase deforming by a diffusion mechanism. Deformation of the grain interior phase is assumed to be carried by two concurrent mechanism. Deformation of the grain interior phase is assumed to be carried by two concurrent mechanisms: dislocation glide and mass transfer by diffusion. The model was exemplified by simulating uniaxial tensile deformation of Cu down to the nanometer grain size. The results confirm the observed strain hardening behaviour and a trend for reduction of ductility with decreasing grain size at room temperature.

  • The effects of Sr and (Ti-B) additives on the tensile properties of AC4A recycled (35% scrap content) aluminum alloys were investigated. An acicular morphology of the eutectic Si phase of as-cast specimens was converted to a fibrous morphology upon the addition of Sr. Moreover, morphology of the Sr modified eutectic Si phase became finer due to a T6 heat treatment. The grain size of the ${\alpha}$-solid solution was decreased by the addition of (Ti-B) additives. Depending on the treatment conditions of the as-cast specimens, i.e., no addition, a Sr addition and a (Ti-B)+Sr addition, the tensile strength levels of the as-cast specimens were 182, 192, and 204MPa, respectively. The corresponding strengths of T6 heat-treated specimens were 293, 308, and 318MPa. Elongations of the as-cast specimens were 2.2, 3.1, and 5.6%, and the corresponding elongations of the T6 heat-treated specimens were 4.6, 6.1, and 7.6%. The percentage of the reduced section area in the tensile specimens was also increased by the Sr and (Ti-B) additives. Sr and (Ti-B) additives changed the microstructure and the distribution of defects in the castings, resulting in an improvement of the tensile properties of AC4A aluminum alloys. According to our test results, recycled (35% scrap content) AC4A aluminum alloy met all of the KS requirements of the tensile strength and elongation values of AC4A aluminum alloy except for the elongation value of the one specimen condition, in this case the as-cast no-addition condition.

  • The effects of minor additives on the casting properties of AC4A aluminum alloys were investigated. Measurements of the cooling curve and microstructure observations were conducted to analyze the effects of Ti-B and Sr minor elements during the solidification process. A fine grain size and an increase in the crystallization temperature for the ${\alpha}-Al$ solution were evident after the addition of 0.1wt% Al-5%Ti-1%B additive. The modification effect of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase with the addition of 0.05% Al-10%Sr additive was prominent. A fine eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase and a decrease in the growth temperature of the eutectic $Mg_2Si$ phase were evident. Fluidity, shrinkage and solidification-cracking tests were conducted to evaluate the castability of the alloy. The combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives showed the maximum filling length owing to the effect of the fine ${\alpha}-Al$ grains. The macro-shrinkage ratio increased, while the micro-shrinkage ratio decreased with the combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives. The macro-shrinkage ratio was nearly identical, while the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of the Al-10%Sr additive. The tendency of the occurrence of solidification cracking decreased owing to the effect of the fine ${\alpha}-Al$ grains and the modification of the $Mg_2Si$ phase with the combined addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B and Al-10%Sr additives.

  • The influences of Cu and Mg addition on wear properties of SiC particulate reinforced Al-Si metal(alloy) matrix composites were investigated. Metal matrix composites were prepared by combination of compocasting and hot pressing techniques. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The composite with Mg addition exhibits letter wear resistance than that with Cu addition. It is considered that Mg addition improved wettability of matal matrix composite by the strong segregation to the SiC / Al matrix interface. 2) After homogenization treatment, it was found that the interfacial segregation of Mg was predominant, while that of Cu was not detected. 3) The SiC / Al-11Si eutectic composite exhibits better wear resistance than the SiC / Al-6Si hypoeutectic composite does. 4) It seems that the increase in the amount of Mg addition affects on the uniform dispersion of SiC particulates, on the refinement of microstructure and on age hardening and these effects cause wear resistance improvement of composites.

  • The mechanical properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites have been investigated in relation with manufacturing factors such as applied pressure of casting and binder amount of preform. It was found that tensile strength increases with an increase of applied pressure, but decreases with binder amount. Increase of tensile strength is attributable to refinement of microstructure, improvement of intefacial bonding between $Al_2O_3$ short fiber and matrix, decrease of porosity in the matrix. Due to the high thermal stability of alumina short fiber, tensile strength of composites at $150^{\circ}C$ was superior to matrix alloy at room temperature. To evaluate the strength of composites, modified Kelly-Tyson's equation was introduced. Manufacturing factor M was obtained calculating from experimental data. M values were increased with applied pressure, but decreased with binder amount. The initiation of microcrack appeared to be at interface and reinforcement colony. Amount of micro-dimple was increased with applied pressure, and interfacial debonding phenomenon was remarkable with an increase of binder amount.

  • Mo nanopowder was synthesized by ball-milling and subsequent hydrogen-reduction of $MoO_3$ powder. To fabricate ultra fine grained molybdenum, two-step sintering and spark plasma sintering process were employed. The grain size of specimen by two-step sintering and spark plasma sintering was around $0.6\;{\mu}m$ and $0.4\;{\mu}m$, respectively. Mechanical properties of ultra fine grained Mo with relative density of above 90% were significantly improved at room and high temperatures comparing to commercial bulk Mo of 99% relative density. This result was mainly explained by the grain size refinement due to diffusion-controlled sintering.

  • In this study, the fabrication of ultra fine grained Mo bulk was conducted. $MoO_3$ nanopowders were prepared by a high energy ball-milling process and then reduced at the temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ without holding time in $H_2$ atmosphere. The particle size of Mo nanopowder was ~150 nm and grain size was ~40 nm. The two-step process was employed for the sintering of Mo nanopowder to obtain fine grain size. The densification over 90% could be obtained by the two-step sintering with a grain size of less than 660 nm. For higher density, modified two-step sintering was designed. 95% of theoretical density with the grain size of 730 nm was obtained by the modified two-step sintering.

  • The relationship between microstructures and tensile properties depending on various solution treatment temperature and cooling rate of Ti-6A1-4V alloy have been investigated. The complex and random edge shaped $\alpha$ phases were formed after the 1st solution treatment at $\beta$ region and the 2nd solution treatment at $900^{\circ}C$, which was followed by furnace cooled. When the specimen was subjected to the 2nd solution treated at $950^{\circ}C$, and furnace cooled, $\alpha$ phase changed its morphology to equiaxed structure. The aspect ratio showing the appreciation basis of microstructual refinement decreases with the temperature of 1st and 2nd solution treatment. The slightly decrease in strength were observed in the Widmanstltten structures than in the bimodal structures. Also, ductility of the Widmanstatten structures was considerable lower than that of bimodal structures. The tensile-fractured surface of the Widmanstatten structures appears to be quasi-cleavage and dimple fracture, while that of the bimodal structures was the type of ductile fracture. The tensile fracture surface of the bimodal structures can easily be separated into cental crack areas lying generally perpendicular to the tensile axis and shear lip areas lying at angles of high shear(around 45 deg.) to the tensile axis.

  • W-Cu composite powders can be prepared by mechanochemical process, where the $WO_3$-CuO composite powders were mechanically synthesized from the elemental oxide powders and subsequently reduced to W-Cu composite powders. In the present work, reduction behavior of$ WO_3$-CuO composite powders that were synthesized at different milling time was examined in terms of hygrometric analysis. In case of $WO_3$-CuO ball-milled for 20 h, the reaction temperature of CuO\longrightarrowCu became lower than in case of 1 h. Also, the reaction of $WO_3$\longrightarrow$WO_{2.9-2.72}$ and $WO_{2.9-2.72}$ \longrightarrow$WO_2$were shifted to lower temperatures and the peaks were changed to much sharper shape. While the reaction of $WO_2$\longrightarrowW in case of ball-milling for 20 h started at lower temperature, the peak temperature was the same as in 1 h ball-milling. The reduced W particle size was somewhat finer fer 20 h ball-milling. It was considered that the refinement of oxide particles caused by ball-milling process leads to such a change in the reduction behavior.
