  • An external gelation method in place of an internal gelation method applied to the fabrication process of an intermediated compound of Uranium Oxy-Carbide (UCO) kernel spheres for Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) fuel preparation is under development in Korea. For the preliminary experiments of the UCO kernel sphere preparation using an external gelation method, the carbon black dispersion experiments were carried out using a simulated broth solution. From the selection experiments of various kinds of carbon black through dispersion experiments in a viscous metal salt solution, Cabot G carbon black was selected owing to its dispersion stability, and the homogeneous dispersing state of carbon black particles in our system. For the effective dispersion of nano-size aggregated carbon black particles in a high viscous liquid, the carbon black particles in a metal salt solution were first de-aggregated with ultrasonic force. The mixed solution was then dispersed secondly by the use of the extremely high-speed agitation with a mechanical mixer of 6000 rpm after feeding the Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) in the solution. This results in the broth solution with good stability and homogeneity alongside no further changes in physical properties.

  • Dynamic characteristics of a scale-dependent porous metal foam cylindrical shell under a traveling load have been explored within this article based on a numerical approach. Within the material texture of the metal foams, uniform and non-uniform porosities may be dispersed. Based upon differential quadrature method (DQM) and Laplace transforms, the equations of motion for a shear deformable scale-dependent shell may be solved numerically. Scale-dependent shell modeling has been provided based upon strain gradient elasticity. Solving the equations will give the shell deflection as a function of load speed. Also, it is reported that shell deflection relies on the porosity dispersion and strain gradient influences.

  • To remove SO$_2$ from flus gas, cupric oxide, manganese oxide and iron oxide were studied with varying loading value. The experiment was carried out in a flow reactor and the reactants were prepared by impregnation method using alumina. The reaction temperature was varied from 30$0^{\circ}C$ to 45$0^{\circ}C$. Experimental results showed that all of these metal oxides were effective on SO$_2$ removal reaction and cupric oxide was the best reactant. The sample with 10wt% loading value was better reactant than with 20wt% because in case of 20wt% loading, metal dispersion on the alumina surface was not uniform. And the SO$_2$ removal efficiency was increased with the reaction temperature.

  • We found a high yield synthetic route to organic-soluble metal nanoparticles in the concentrated organic phase. The organic phase contains metal salt, amines, fatty acids, nonpolar solvent, and reducing agent. Even using only generic chemicals, organic-soluble silver and copper nanoparticles could be easily obtained by this simple and rapid reaction scheme at large scale. The hydrocarbon-protected metal nanoparticles showed excellent dispersion properties and were successfully printed onto polymer substrates. The printed pattern was heated at $200^{\circ}C$, which showed very low specific electrical resistance (< 10 uOhm$\cdot$cm), sufficient for conducting line of various printable devices.

  • Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability but is sensitive to hot cracking such as solidification crack and liquation crack. In this study, the specimens of dissimilar metals made between austenitic stainless steel and Al-brass were welded by GTAW process using four different filler metals. Cracks were detected in the heat-affected zone of the stainless steel when welded with CuAl, CuSn and NiCu filler metals, but no cracks were detected a Ni filler metal was used. The cracks propagated along the grain boundary in the heat affected zone near the fusion line to base metal of 316L stainless steel. The cracks were located inside the weld bead with very fine hairline crack. All cracks initiated at the fusion line and moved forward in the base metal. From energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), Cu peak was detected only in the crack-opening area.

  • In photocatalysis, the addition of metal matter to $TiO_2$ can alter the surface properties. As such, the metal can increase the rate of the photodegradation reaction. In this study, a range of modified $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were prepared and tested to improve the activity of photodegradation at a batch-typed photoreactor. To obtain a good sol solution of the $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, several types of dispersion agents and stabilizers were investigated. The photocatalyst solutions were modified with isoproply alcohol as the dispersion agent and sodium silicate as the stabilizer. The effects of various metallic elements on enhancing the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ on the degradation of toluene were examined. Palladium-added $TiO_2$ was found to be the best, whereas copper or tungsten-added also showed good results. In the case of palladium addition, the increase in removal efficiency was 25%. On the other hand, Fe-added $TiO_2$ showed a notable decrease in photocatalytic degradation. Additional doping of copper or tungsten on the $Pd/TiO_2$ had no positive effect on the photodegradation activity.

  • The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts were prepared from conventional chloride precursors by adsorption or precipitation-deposition methods. Their activities for hydrogenation reactions of cyclohexene and acetophenone were compared with those of commercial catalysts. The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts obtained from the adsorption procedure reveal higher hydrogenation activity than commercial catalysts and the catalysts prepared by the precipitation-deposition method. Their improved performances are attributed to the decreased metal crystallite sizes of Pt or Pd formed on the active carbon support upon the adsorption of the precursors probably due to the same negative charges of the chloride precursor and the carbon support. Under the preparation conditions studied, the reduction of the supported catalysts using borohydrides in liquid phase is superior to a gas phase reduction by using hydrogen in the viewpoint of particle size, hydrogenation activity and convenience.

  • Pd on charcoal particles were prepared by wet impregnation to develop commercial catalyst for aerobic benzyl alcohol oxidation. Especially, one of room temperature ionic liquids, [Hmim][$PF_6$], was used as an effective solvent in the synthesis to improve the metal dispersion of the catalysts. Among the Pd/Charcoal with various Pd concentrations, 7.5 wt% catalyst showed the higher catalytic activity and stability. Moreover, Ag was used as a promoter with various ratios in catalyst preparation. Under identical reaction conditions, the catalyst with 9 : 1 of Pd and Ag weight ratios was most active due to higher metal dispersion.

  • Dispersion of coagulant should be completed in a fraction of a second before the metal hydroxide precipitate has form. For the reason so-called pump diffusion flash mixing (PDFM) have been proposed, and PDFM is one of reasonable methods to quickly disperse the hydrolyzing metal salts. In this study, therefore, we attempt to understand the difference of removal characteristics of natural organic matter (NOM) between pump diffusion flash mixing (PDFM) and conventional rapid mixing (CRM) for coagulation in a water treatment system, and to enhance the removal of NOM through the improved mixing process. DOC and turbidity removal by PDFM higher than those by CRM, while SUVA value of water treated by PDFM was high as compared with that by CRM. Hydrophilic NOM was more effectively removed by PDFM than CRM, since charge neutralization effect increased by quick dispersion of coagulant. The DBP formation potentials due to NOM was effectively reduced by the improved mixing (i.e., PDFM) for coagulation and could be controlled through decrease in concentration of precursor rather than reduction of activity with disinfectant.

  • The alkenylation of o-xylene with 1,3-butadiene to make OTP(ortho-tolyl Pentene) was carried out over liquid phase NaK alloy, Na metal and the metallic sodium dispersed on the specific support such as NaX and $Al_2O_3$. Liquid phase NaK alloy showed the improved conversion and selectivity when they were pretreated by ultrasound to increase the dispersion. For the case of metallic sodium, the induction period for the formation of homogeneous metal sodium solution with high dispersion was needed before the reaction. In the case of metallic sodium dispersed on support, more than 80 % conversion could be obtained without induction period regardless of supports used. But 85 % of the metallic sodium was resolved into the reaction mixture after reaction for 7 hours. The amount of byproducts, oligomers, produced from OTP and 1,3-butadiene increased with the amount of 1,3-butadiene introduced and the selectivity to OTP was in inversely proportional to the conversion.
