  • We report photometric features of the HB, MSTO, and SGB for a set of metal-poor Galactic globular clusters on the near-IR CMDs. The magnitude and color of the MSTO and SGB are measured on the fiducial normal points of the CMDs by applying a polynomial fit. The near-IR luminosity functions of horizontal branch stars in the classical second parameter pair M3 and M13 indicate that HB stars in M13 are dominated by hot stars that are rotatively faint in the infrared, whereas HB stars in M3 are brighter than those in M13. The luminosity functions of HB stars in the observed bulge clusters, except for NGC 6717, show a trend that the fainter hot HB stars are dominated in the relatively metal-poor clusters while the relatively metal-rich clusters contain the brighter HB stars. It is suggestive that NGC 6717 would be an extreme example of the second-parameter phenomenon for the bulge globular clusters.

  • Novel rhodamine 6G fluorescent chemosensors 1 and 2 for the detection of transition metal cations were synthesized through the condensation of rhodamine 6G ethylenediamine with each of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 2,6-pyridinedicarbaldehyde, respectively. 1 and 2 were characterized using $^{13}C$ NMR, $^1H$ NMR and mass spectroscopy. Fluorometric and colorimetric measurements involving various metal ions revealed the ring opening of the rhodamine 6G spirocycle framework. In the absence of metal cations, 2 was colorless and non-fluorescent, whereas the addition of metal cations ($Hg^{2+}$ and others) changed the color to pink, accompanied by the appearance of an orange fluorescence. The chemosensors exhibited high selectivity for $Hg^{2+}$ over other divalent first-row transition metals. The complexes of $Hg^{2+}$ with 1 and 2 were successfully isolated. A huge enhancement in the fluorescence for both one- and two-photon excitations makes these compounds suitable candidates to be used for fluorescent labeling of biological systems.

  • Transition metal Cr3+ and Fe3+ ion was diffused in white sapphire {0001}, {1010} crystal plane which were grown by the Verneuil method. It enhanced and changed the physical, electrical and optical properties of sapphires. After mixing the metallic oxide and metal powder, it were used for diffusion. Metallic oxide was synthesized by precipitation method and it's composition was mainly alumina which doped with chromium or ferric oxide. In case using metallic oxide, the dopping was slowly progressed and it needed the longer duration time and higher temperature, relatively. Metallic powder was vapoured under 1x10-4 torr of vacuum pressure at 1900(iron metal) and 2050(chromium)℃, first step. Diffusion condition were kept by 6atm of N2 accelerating pressure at 2050∼2150℃. Each surface density of sapphire crystal are 0.225(c) and 0.1199atom/Å2(a). The color of the Cr-doped sapphires was changed to red. Dopping reaction was come out more deep in th plane of {1010} than {0001}. It was speculated that the planar density was one of the factors to determine diffusion effect.

  • We present population synthesis models for the calcium II triplet (CaT), currently the most popular metallicity indicator, based on high-resolution empirical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Our new CaT models, based on empirical SEDs, show a linear correlation below [Fe/H] ~ -0.5, but the linear relation breaks down in the metal-rich regime by converging to the same equivalent width. This relation shows good agreement with the observed CaT of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 1407 and the Milky Way. However, a model based on theoretical SEDs does not show this feature of the CaT and fails to reproduce observed GCs in the metal-rich regime. This linear relation may cause inaccurate metallicity determination for metal-rich stellar populations. We have also confirmed that the effect of horizontal-branch stars on the CaT is almost negligible in models based on both empirical and theoretical SEDs. Our new empirical model may explain the difference between the color distributions and CaT distributions of GCs in various early-type galaxies. Based on our model, we claim that the CaT is not a good metallicity indicator for simple stellar populations in the metal-rich regime.

  • Recently, as titanium and titanium alloys are being increasingly used in wide areas, there are on-going researches to obtain high quality weld zone. In particular, growing interest is being drawn to laser welding, which involves low heat input and large aspect ratio in various welding processes and can facilitate shield in atmospheric condition compared with electron beam welding. The first report covered the analysis of embrittlement by the bead color of weld zone through quantitative analysis of oxygen and nitrogen and measurement of hardness as basic experiment to apply laser welding to titanium. Results indicated that the element that affect embrittlement the most was nitrogen, and as embrittlement and oxygenation go on, bead color changed to silver, gold, brown, blue and gray. This study performed butt welding of pure titanium and STS304 by using 1kW CW Nd:YAG laser, and to find out basic physical properties, evaluated welding performance by laser output, welding speed, root gap and misalignment etc, and examined mechanical properties through tensile stress and Erichsen test. The reason particles of pure titanium welded metal and HAZ are greater than STS304 is because they are pure metal and do not include many impure elements that work as nuclei in case of resolidification, thus becoming coarse columnar crystals eventually. In addition, the reason STS304 requires more energy during welding than pure titanium is because the particle size of base metal is smaller.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to spectrophotometrically evaluate the influence of porcelain layer thickness and substructure. Materials and Methods: Four groups of porcelain specimens (metal and ceramic substructure) was prepared for analysis. Color parameters were measured with spectrophotometer and color difference (${\Delta}E*$) were calculated. T-test and one-way ANOVA test were used to find out significant difference and Tukey test was used to identify where the difference ware. Results: Increasing the thickness of porcelain decreased values (P < 0.05). Increasing the thickness of porcelain on ceramic substructure decreased the $a^*$ (P < 0.05) but, the $b^*$ were not statistically different. Total color difference (${\Delta}E*$) were below 1 when the difference of porcelain thickness were 0.5 mm. Conclusion: The thickness of porcelain are the factor effecting on color. This study will help the color are controlled by changing the thickness of porcelain clinically.

  • Characteristics of spectral irradiance based on the distance from the light source, which combined metal halide lamp and high-luminance light-emitting diode (LED) light, were studied to investigate a suitable operating method for fishing lamps of the next generation. A 380-780 nm wavelength radiation was superior when using 1 W electrical power in the order of metal halide lamp, blue LED, white LED, and combined LED lights. The wavelengths at which the irradiance was at a maximum were fixed to 581 nm for the light source, which was combined for each ratio. If the irradiance characteristics at 300-1100 nm wavelengths were set as 100%, the irradiance rates at 400-599 nm were 100%, 72.7%, 88.9%, and 69.5% for the blue, white, combined LED lights, and metal halide lamp, respectively. This indicated that the color rendering of the LED lights was dependent on the metal halide lamp light source. When the horizontal profiles (450-550 nm wavelength) of irradiances were compared to a different type of light source in the ratio white LED: combined LED lights: blue LED: metal halide lamp, the irradiated area of more than $0.01\;{\mu}mol/s/m^2/nm$ was in the ratio 1.0 : 1.3 : 1.7 : 37.3, respectively. Based on the radiation characteristics and irradiance according to the distance from the light source, LED lights have an estimated economic efficiency if used before and after operation of a metal halide lamp.

  • This study was aimed to provide the fundamental data about oxidized hair color products. For this reason, we collected 125 oxidized hair color products, which were distributed in domestic market from January to October, 2012, and measured the heavy metal concentrations of lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, manganese, nickel, copper in the samples. Results were compared by domestic, foreign, henna, type and color. The average metal concentrations were as follows; 0.211 ${\mu}g/g$ for lead, 0.008 ${\mu}g/g$ for cadmium, 0.051 ${\mu}g/g$ for arsenic, 0.954 ${\mu}g/g$ for chromium, 6.250 ${\mu}g/g$ for manganese, 0.591 ${\mu}g/g$ for nickel and 0.544 ${\mu}g/g$ for copper. In case of lead and arsenic, the concentrations were much less than the regulated amount (20 ${\mu}g/g$ and 10 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively) suggested by MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety). In henna (p < 0.05), the concentrations were significantly higher than those of other domestic and foreign oxidized hair color products as follows; 1.264 ${\mu}g/g$ for lead, 0.267 ${\mu}g/g$ for arsenic, 0.025 ${\mu}g/g$ for cadmium, 4.055 ${\mu}g/g$ for chromium, 72.044 ${\mu}g/g$ for manganese, 3.076 ${\mu}g/g$ for nickel and 4.640 ${\mu}g/g$ for copper. Statistically, it showed that the heavy metal concentrations were quite different for the different types of hair color products. The cream and liquid type products had the highest average concentration in chromium (0.708 ${\mu}g/g$, 0.478 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively). On the other hand, powder type products showed the highest concentration in manganese (60.041 ${\mu}g/g$). In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals and the color of products are not quite correlated. It was shown that average concentrations of lead and chromium were higher for yellow, chromium for red and pink, manganese for brown and black, and nickel for green.

  • Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.
