  • In-situ bearing metal temperature and shaft vibration are measured for an unload type and a preload type, m=0.87, of vertical guide bearing for hydraulic pump-turbines. Guide bearing is a tiltingpad type journal bearing consisting of eight pads whose diameter is 1,450 mm. Rotational speed is 450 rpm. Both the bearing metal temperature and the shaft vibration are very high in the unload type but are slight in the preload type, comparatively. The bearing metal temperature is decreased due to the increase of cooling effect by the increase of preload and the shaft vibration is decreased due to the increase of bearing stiffness. It is concluded that the preload effect of a guide bearing for hydraulic pump-turbines has a large influence on the bearing metal temperature and the shaft vibration.

  • Metal Bearing's research that use the clad steel had led in advanced country. Metal Bearing that is produced by domestic companies is ship, vehicles, development equipment and plant equipment. This is Cast White Metal Lining Bearing that is Bimetal Bearing standing 2 generation. Cast White Metal Lining Bearing is foreseen to be used widely on industry whole in the future. Cast White Metal Bearing is product that need precision processing. But the technique is generalized widely. So an advanced country is depending on import from a developing country that price is cheaper than itself manufacture. it is judged that high added value creation by deepening of price competition is difficult. Therefore need product development of new form and is changing to Trimetal Bearing parts. Trimetal Bearing is high quality technique that do compression junction to thin plates of special object on the Back Metal. Therefore, this research developed Trimetal bearing's materials.

Friction and Electrical Characteristics of Oil-impregnated Sintered-Metal Bearing with Grooves (그루브를 가진 함유소결베어링의 마찰 및 전기적 특성)

  • The electrical and frictional properties of new sintered-metal bearing (S-bearing) with varying loads and speeds were measured. Also those were compared with the same products(J-bearing) made in Japan and the conventionally used ball bearing. The test results show that the frictional values of S-bearing are less than those of J-bearing, and that S-bearing operates in full-hydrodynamic lubrication regime. The values of rating current, starting time and jitter reveal that S-bearing is superior to J-bearing as well as ball bearing.

  • Nowadays the thin-walled metal bearing, which is made seperately from the bearing housing and has the ratio of wall thickness/bearing diameter being less than 1/30, are used in many newly developed large-sized slow speed diesel engines for the purpose of upgarding lubication performance and easy maintenance according to the trends of increasing output per cylinder and lowering engine speed. The type of this bearing has been used generally in many small-sized high speed engines applied for automobile, high speed craft and industrial power generation systems since 1950s. But the tranditional thick-walled bearings, whice are linned white metal on the bearing housing directly, have been installed on the large and slow speed engines until 1990s due to the easy manufacturing procedures. In this study we have calculated optimum dimensions of the metal bearing, fabricated special zigs for crush measurement, model test machine, 2 sets of specimens.(crosshead pin bearing, $\phi$818*552*20mm) for B & W 6S70MC(20, 940*88rpm), and evaluated metal constact phenomena of white metal, its friction coefficient, temparature rise through the model test and field performance test.

  • This paper describes an optimal design technology in a segment type vertical guide bearing for vertical rotating machinery. Segment type vertical guide bearings have widely used for vertical rotating machinery, however bearing problems, such as excessive vibration and temperature rise, frequently take place in the actual machine. Such excessive vibration magnitude and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature rise result in serious damage and economic losses. Thus the segment type vertical guide bearing should be designed to get optimal characteristics in order to maintain stable operation without bearing failure due to abnormal vibration and/or abnormal bearing metal temperature. The preload ratio is the most important parameter in designing the segment type vertical guide bearing. Because adjustment of the bearing preload by changing the bearing clearance could easily control both the bearing stiffness and the cooling effect. In the paper, the influence of the preload effects on the bearing metal temperature and the bearing stiffness has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find out an optimum preload ratio. Results show that the segment type vertical guide bearing has an optimum preload ratio at which the bearing stiffness reaches a masimum value while the bearing metal temperature is minimized.

  • The aim of this paper is to study the characteristics of thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication in the bimetal bearings. Bimetal bearing is composed of lining and back metal. The THD model is proposed to calculate oil film temperature and pressure in the bimetal bearing. As results of analysis, comparative results of maximum bearing temperature are presented for the various materials and thickness of lining metal.

  • The electrical and frictional properties of oil-impregnated sintered-metal bearing (OSB) and herringbone-grooved fluid bearing (HFB) with varying loads and speeds were measured. OSB shows very good performance up to 20,000 rpm and 0.05 N, and HFB successfully works up to 35,000 rpm and 0.05 N. From the endurance tests on start-stop and continuous operation, it was confirmed that those bearings could be mass-produced fur use on scanner motor in a laser scanner unit.

Effect on Seal Tooth Clearance on Power Loss and Temperature of Tilting Pad Journal Bearing (씰 투스 간극이 틸팅 패드 저어널 베어링 손실과 온도에 미치는 영향)

  • Tilting pad journal bearing is widely used for steam turbines because of its excellent dynamic stability. As the turbine capacity increases, power loss in the bearings becomes a matter of concern. Power loss in tilting pad journal bearings can be reduced by increasing the bearing clearance and reducing the pad arc length. In this study, the tilting pad journal bearing is tested by changing the seal tooth clearance to verify the static characteristics of the bearing. Bearing power loss and bearing metal temperature are evaluated to compare the bearing's performance and reliability for several test cases. The test bearing is a tilting pad journal bearing with 300.62mm inner diameter and 120.00mm active length. The bearing power loss, its metal temperature, and oil film thickness are measured and evaluated based on the rotor's rotational speed, oil flow rate, and bearing load. Test results show that a tilting pad journal bearing with large seal tooth clearance has 40% lower power loss compared with a bearing with a small seal tooth clearance. As the seal tooth clearance is increased, the power loss of the tilting pad journal bearing decreases. However, with respect to the bearing metal temperatures, a detuning point is observed that makes the minimum bearing metal temperature. Moreover, as the seal tooth clearance is increased, the oil film thickness increases due to high viscosity.
