The elastic recovery of a metal seal is a factor that can be used to assess its sealing performance. In this study, a compliant mechanism topology optimization has been performed to find a structure of a metal O-ring seal that can maintain excellent sealing performance with a maximized elastic recovery over extended operation. An evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) was used as a topology optimization algorithm with two different types of objective functions considering both flexibility and stiffness. In particular, a circular design domain was adopted to consider the outer shape of the metal O-ring seal. The elastic recovery of the optimal topology was calculated and compared to that of a commercial product.
Inside of working PDP, there exist highly reactive conditions in the gap between two glass panels. MgO film and phosphor have been investigated as a function of discharge, also phosphor and sealing frits have been investigated as a function of temperature. Changes of impurity generation of MgO, phosphor and sealing fits were measured by using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and quadropole mass spectroscopy (XPS) and quadropole mass spectrometer (QMS). Impurities such as CO, $CO_2$, OH and $H_2O$ were increased during discharge and heating treatment. Gaseous impurities such as carbon compounds and water deteriorated the characteristics of PDP operation during of lifetime. So metal is used to remove the impurities of phosphor and sealing frits during hearting, the result that the quantity of the impurities such as carbon monoxide and water was reduced.
In order to form a uniform oxidation layer and spinel crystalline phase that was supposed to help strong bonding in Kovar(Fe-29Ni-17Co)to-glass sealing the humidified nitrogen (2.3%H2O/N2) was used as an oxidation atmosphere. Kovar oxidation was diffusion-contolled and the activation energy was 2.51 kcal/mol at 600-900$^{\circ}C$ After oxidation at 600$^{\circ}C$ the oxidation layer was under 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness and crystalline phase was spinel which was found to be suitable for the Kovar-to-glass sealing.

Metal seals are the main components that establish the containment boundary in bolted casks, which store spent nuclear fuel. These seals are degraded by heat and radiation. In addition, creep occurs when the seals are exposed to intense heat for an extended period. This creep results in the stress relaxation of the seals, which consequently impairs the seal integrity. The stress relaxation can reduce the sealing performance of the metal seal, which can further cause leakage in the storage cask. Moreover, the reduction of bolt tension leads to sealing performance degradation. In this study, the results of high-temperature-accelerated tests were obtained to evaluate the containment integrity of metal seals and the decrease in bolt tension. During the tests, the leakage rate, bolt strain, and ambient temperature of the metal seals were measured and analyzed. The metal seals were found to maintain containment integrity for 50 years of storage. The validity of the acceleration test was also investigated.

Fuel Test Loop(FTL) is a facility which could conduct a fuel irradiation test at HANARO(High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor). FTL simulates commercial NPP's operating conditions such as the pressure, temperature and neutron flux levels to conduct the irradiation and thermo-hydraulic tests. The In-Pile Test Section(IPS) installed in HANARO FTL is designed as a pressure vessel design conditions of $350^{\circ}C$, 17.5MPa. The instrumentation MI-cables for thermocouples, SPND and LVDT are passed through the sealing plug, which is in the pressure boundary region and is a part of instrumentation feedthrough of MI-cable. In this study, the brazing method and performance test results are introduced to the sealing plug with BNi-2 filler metal, which is selected with consideration of the compatibility for the coolant. The performance was verified through the insulation resistance test, hydrostatic test, and helium leak test.
Metal-supported SOFCs have been investigated to overcome the disadvantages of ceramic-supported SOFCs, including issues related to mechanical strength and sealing. In the case of ceramic-supported cells, the mechanical support is a brittle ceramic or cermet, and it contains expensive materials. However, metal-supported cells utilize ceramic layers that are only as thick as necessary for electrochemical functioning, thereby compensating for the disadvantages of ceramic-supported cells. The mechanical support is fabricated from inexpensive and robust metals, and the electrochemically active layers are applied directly to the metal support. The metal-supported SOFCs thus can provide a reduced system cost, ease of manufacturing, and operational advantages. Owing to these features, metal-supported SOFCs are a very promising candidate for commercialization. Given the importance of studying worldwide trends in metal-supported SOFC research for performance evaluation, this paper reviews development trends with a focus on fabrication methods. Furthermore, a novel fabrication method developed in KAIST is discussed.
The bond strength of metal to ceramic sealing in Mo-Mn metallizing was investigated by examining the effects of flux composition in alumina ceramics particle size of molybdenum metal powder wet hydrogen atmosphere and temperature in metallizing. The maximum bond strength was obtained when the glass phase filled almost all the microstructural cavities around the interfacial area with few micropores. Such a favorable microstrcutre waas formed and maximum bond strength was observed between 130$0^{\circ}C$. Also the metal to ceramic bond strength was increased using finer molybdenum metal powder than coarse powder. When content of $SiO_2$ in the flux of alumina ceramics was constant metal to ceramic bond strength was improved with increasing the ratio of CaO to MgO in the flux.
Advanced structure of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells was devised to overcome sealing problem and mechanical instability in ceramic-supported solid oxide fuel cells. STS430 whose dimensions were 26mm diameter, 1mm thickness and 0.4mm channel width was used as metal support. Thin ceramic layer composed of anode(Ni/YSZ) and electrolyte(YSZ) was joined with STS430 metal support by using a cermet adhesive. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_{3}$ perovskite oxide was used as cathode material. It was noted that oxygen reduction reaction of cathode governed the overall cell performance from oxygen partial pressure dependance.
The adhesion behaviors and processability of NBR as a sealing material were investigated. In order to find the optimum formulation, the adhesive properties and processability were observed as the change of the contents of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR. Effects of Mooney viscosity, filler, plasticizer and crosslinking agent on the adhesion behaviors were also studied. The contents of ACN in NBR have great effects on adhesion behaviors and processability in NBR sealing. To know the optimum condition of roll mixing, degree of dispersion was investigated. It was confirmed that degree of dispersion was influenced by various factors such as mixing order, time, and temperature. The crosslinking system was studied as the observation of sulfur system, peroxide system, crosslinking density, and structure. From the variation of the dry condition and hexamine contents, the relation between adhesive and NBR was studied. These results show the adhesion properties and processability are dependent on the contents of ACN and crosslinking system.
