In this study, we investigated the structure and properties of a highly heat conductive metal-ceramic core-shell CoAl2O4@Al micro-composite for heterogeneous catalysts support. The CoAl2O4@Al was prepared by hydrothermal surface oxidation of Al metal powder, which resulted in the structure with a high heat conductive Al metal core encapsulated by a high surface area CoAl2O4 shell. For comparison, CoAl2O4 was also prepared by co-precipitation method and also utilized for a catalyst support. Rh catalysts supported on CoAl2O4@Al and CoAl2O4 were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CO chemisorption, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). The properties of catalysts were investigated for glycerol steam reforming reaction for hydrogen production at 550 ℃. Rh/CoAl2O4@Al exhibited about 2.8 times higher glycerol conversion turnover frequency (TOF) than Rh/CoAl2O4 due to facilitated heat transport through the core-shell structure. The CoAl2O4@Al and CoAl2O4 also showed some catalytic activities due to a partial reduction of Co on the support, and a higher catalytic activity was also found on the CoAl2O4@Al core-shell than CoAl2O4. These catalysts, however, displayed deactivation on the reaction stream due to carbon deposition on the catalysts surface.
Pitch-binded activated carbon fiber(ACF)/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were prepared by Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios of anatase to ACF. The result of the textural surface properties demonstrated that there is a slight increase in the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area of composites with an increase of the amount of ACF. The surfaces structure morphologies of the composites were observed using an Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In the XRD patterns for all ACF/$TiO_2$ composites, the diffraction peaks showed the formation of anatase crystallites. The EDX spectra showed the presence of C, O and Si with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples were richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. From the photo-decomposition results, the excellent activity of the ACF/$TiO_2$ composites between c/$c_0$ for methylene blue and UV irradiation time could be attributed to both the effects of the photocatalysis of the supported $TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of activated carbon fiber and another carbon derived from pitch.
Metal-ceramic composite membrane have been developed to separate hydrogen from mixed gases, particularly product streams generated during coal gasification and methane reforming. Cermet membrane was fabricated with palladium as hydrogen-permeable metal and $Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) as ceramic supporter. As-prepared membrane showed dense structure with continuous channel of palladium. The hydrogen flux of Pd/YSZ membrane have been measured in the range of 0.5~2 atm with 100% hydrogen gas. The results indicate that the hydrogen flux was 0.333 mL/$min{\cdot}cm^2$ at $450^{\circ}C$ and 2 atm. The crack was formed in the surface and cross-section of membrane.

Polycarbosilane(PCS) is an important precursor for melt-spinning the silicon carbide(SiC) fibers and manufacturing ceramics. The PCS is a metal-organic polymer precursor capable of producing continuous SiC fibers having excellent performance such as high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. The SiC fibers are manufactured through melt-spinning, stabilization, and heat treatment processes using the PCS manufactured by synthesis, purification, and control of the molecular structure. In this paper, we analyzed the effect of purification of unreacted substances and low molecular weight through solvent treatment of PCS and the effect of heat treatment at various temperatures change the polymerization and network rearrangement of PCS. Especially, we investigated the complex viscosity and structural arrangement of PCS precursors according to solvent treatment and heat treatment through the rheological properties.
Co fine particles were dispersed in Au metal and $AlO_x$ amorphous matrices by vacuum evaporation and rf-sputtering, respectively, thus forming granular composite films having chemical compositions of $Co_{0.59}-Au_{0.41}$ and $Co_{0.52}/(AlO_x$)_{0.48}$. The films were annealed at 200~$500^{\circ}C$ to increase the size of the Co particles, from 30$\AA$ to 180$\AA$ in the Au matrix and 40$\AA$ to 180$\AA$ in the $AlO_x$ matrix, as revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The Co metal in as-deposited films have saturation magnetization equivalent to that of bulk Co, which is unchanged by the annealing, showing that the Co metal is not oxidized by the annealing. Magneto-optical Kerr rotation measured at $\lambda$=400-900nm for the $Co_{0.59}-Au_{0.41}$ film as deposited is larger than that calculated for the composition. The rotation increases as the film is annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$, approaching to that of bulk Co. The Kerr rotation for the $Co_{0.52}-(AlO_x)_{0.48}$ film as deposited is smaller than that calculated for the composition based on Bruggeman effective medium theory. However, the rotation increases much, exceeding the rotation of the bulk Co as annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. As a possible origin of the marked magneto-optical enhancement a weak localization of light in granular structure is suggested.
The energy harvesting device is known to be promising as an alternative to solve the resource shortage caused by the depletion of petroleum resources. In order to overcome the limitations (environmental pollution and low mechanical properties) of piezoelectric elements capable of converting mechanical motion into electrical energy, many studies have been conducted on a polymer matrix-based composite piezoelectric energy harvesting device. In this paper, the output performance and related applications of the reported piezoelectric composites are reviewed based on the applied materials and processes. As for the piezoelectric fillers, zinc oxide, which is advantageous in terms of eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, and flexibility, as well as ceramic fillers based on lead zirconate titanate and barium titanate, were reviewed. The polymer matrix was classified into piezoelectric polymers composed of polyvinylidene fluoride and copolymers, and flexible polymers based on epoxy and polydimethylsiloxane, to discuss piezoelectric synergy of composite materials and improvement of piezoelectric output by high external force application, respectively. In addition, the effect of improving the conductivity or the mechanical properties of composite material by the application of a metal or carbon-based secondary filler on the output performance of the piezoelectric harvesting device was explained in terms of the structure of the composite material. Composite material-based piezoelectric harvesting devices, which can be applied to small electronic devices, smart sensors, and medicine with improved performance, can provide potential insights as a power source for wireless electronic devices expected to be encountered in future daily life.

Three-layer nano-coated films in applications for the back cover of mobile cellular phones were prepared utilizing a roll-to-roll continuous process. By introducing a coating layer with a ceramic/metal/ceramic three-layer structure, the inherent reflective properties of the metals were maintained while electrically insulating properties were maintained. The thickness of the composite coating layer on a large area PET film with a length of 1,500 nm and width of 500 nm was less than 60 nm, and a uniform thickness was maintained in all areas. The transmittance according to the wavelength range (240~1600 nm) of the nanocoating film gradually increases as the wavelength increases, and is about 48 % at 1,000 nm, which is within the infrared region, and about 35.5 % at 550 nm, which is within the visible region. These results meet the required level of coated backcover (< 40 %).

Metal matrix composites have been extensively studied because of their excellent characteristics for structural application. $Al_2O_3$ and SiC have been used as a common reinforcement owing to their good mechanical properties. However the manufacturing cost of these ceramic reinforcement is expensive, so the use of the composites has been restricted to special purposes. In this study, we tested the application possibility as a reinforcement of $Al_2O_3$-TiC powder synthesized by SHS(Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) process to Al alloy matrix composite. Also, $Al_2O_3$ short fibers were added with the synthesized powders in order to apply to the Al matrix hybrid composites. Squeeze infiltration casting process was used to make the composite with 25vol% of reinforcement. Microstructure and crystal structure were examined by SEM, OM and XRD, also the mechanical properties were studied by the compressive test and wear test.

The co-precipitation technique has been applied to synthesize Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP), Mg-BCP and Si-BCP. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of synthesized BCP, Mg-BCP and Si-BCP powders. The results have shown that BCP and substitution of magnesium and silicon in the calcium deficient apatites revealed the formation of biphasic mixtures of Hydroxyapatite (HAp)/${\beta}$-Tricalcium phosphate (${\beta}$-TCP) ratios after heating at $1000^{\circ}C$. Ionic substituted BCP is able to develop a new apatite phase on the surface in contact with physiological fluids faster than BCP does. An MTT assay indicated that BCP, Mg-BCP, and Si-BCP powders had no cytotoxic effects on MG-63 cells, and that they have good biocompatibility.
The main objective of this paper is to compute the far-field acoustic radiation (sound radiation) of functionally graded plates (FGM) loaded by sinusoidally varying point load subjected to the arbitrary boundary condition is carried out. The governing differential equations for thin functionally graded plates (FGM) are derived using classical plate theory (CPT) and Rayleigh integral using the elemental radiator approach. Four cases, segregated on power-law index k=0,1,5,10, are studied. A novel approach is illustrated to compute sound fields of vibrating FGM plates using the physical neutral surface with an elemental radiator approach. The material properties of the FGM plate for all cases are calculated considering the power law indexes. An in-house MATLAB code is written to compute the natural frequencies, normal surface velocities, and sound radiation fields are analytically calculated using semi-analytical formulation. Ansys is used to validate the computed sound power level. The parametric effects of the power law index, modulus ratios, different constituent of FGM plates, boundary conditions, damping loss factor on the sound power level, and radiation efficiency is illustrated. This work is the benchmark approach that clearly explains how to calculate acoustic fields using a solid layered FGM model in ANSYS ACT. It shows that it is possible to asymptotically stabilize the structure by controlling the intermittent layers' stiffness. It is found that sound fields radiated by the elemental radiators approach in MATLAB, ANSYS and literatures are in good agreement. The main novelty of this research is that the FGM plate is analyzed in the low-frequency range, where the stiffness-controlled region governs the whole analysis. It is concluded that a clamped mono-ceramic FGM plate radiates a lesser sound power level and higher radiation efficiency than a mono-metallic or metal-rich FGM plate due to higher stiffness. It is found that change in damping loss factor does not affect the same constituents of FGM plates but has significant effects on the different constituents of FGM plates.
